She was exhausted, she had watched this territory for days, observing the wolves that she could, but not daring to cross the invisible line that stood only feet in front of her. There was a large part of her that was screaming to run away, that coming here was a stupid idea, that she would be better off alone, and that she would be killed the moment she crossed the border. She would begin to back away from the line when these thoughts came up, but then the fragmented memories of the rogue coming at her or waking up and finding her mother and brother dead would cross her mind and she would stop and creep back towards the territory.
She knew that she would have to eventually signal her presence. She was surprised no one had scented her yet. Her paws danced on the earth below her as she finally fought off the last vestiges of fear. She couldn’t let fear rule her life or she would be alone for ever, and most likely dead before her next birthday. It was a miracle that she survived until her second birthday, which was only a few days behind her.
Finally she pushed the fear deep enough to tilt her head back and let a long low howl escape from deep within her chest. The lone sound called for someone to come to her. The song that she sung not only asked for someone to join her, but for a companion, for acceptance, and even a bit of hope.
As the last note fell from her muzzle she let her ears flick forwards searching for a response, and hoping that it came from within the territory. She didn’t want to make a bad first impression by barging onto the strange territory without being invited.
