He looked every which way with every step he took, giving him a rather suspicious appearance. But he had every right to be a little skittish. He had crossed the border into Descai territory, home to the most mysterious and frightening pack that roamed Anikira. Although he’d never actually encountered any members of the pack, word traveled fast on a small island. If the rumors were true, the forest around him had eyes and would tell the alpha he was trespassing. He had to tread lightly if he valued his life. Amyn didn’t know the alpha brute personally, but he’d spoken to plenty of wolves who had. The ones who weren’t too afraid to speak of the alpha brute anyway. He was ruthless. Few males made it passed the border, let alone into the pack. If Amyn wasn’t careful, the brute would come tearing across the land upon hearing another male stepped foot in his precious territory. If it came down to a confrontation, Amyn would turn tail and run. But he needed to venture through Acerbus to reach the southernmost portion of Anikira. Well, he could always venture through The Oriens or Kamari, both with much more reasonable alphas. But he was in the area and didn’t want to go out of his way just to be safe. No. He could do this. No problem. But that didn’t change the tentative steps the brute took. The alpha could be right around the corner. Or behind that tree? Amyn paused, listening carefully. The night wind rustled the dying leaves gently, but there was no other noise. He sniffed the air. The alpha brute’s scent markers were all around him, but the wolf in question was not. In fact, Amyn was very much alone in that moment. It was as if there were no other wolves in Acerbus at all. Or maybe they were preoccupied with some other disaster. Amyn prayed that was true. If he could get through the territory undetected, he would be a happy camper. Kallik. Vorilye. Tike. Her thoughts whirred through her mind. A blur. Shapes, sounds and color. It made no sense. Vorilye. His gold eyes. Like fire. Fury. Anger. Hate. Akihra. Kallik. Vorilye. Kallik left, Kallik ran. Kallik went straight back to Descai. She had promised. Tike. To meet Tike. Vorilye, Kallik, Tike. At the border. But she went into Descai. The border of Kamari. The border of Acerbus. Get away, her mind had said. Leave. Flee. Away from Kamari. Into Acerbus. Go home, go home. Descai. Vorilye. Home. Safety. Family. Movement caught Kallik’s eyes, and the flashes of images vanished. Her thoughts were muddled and broken, too much had happened. Her children, dead or disappeared, only Tike had stayed. What was going on? Jade eyes flashed as she glanced around dazedly, feeling disoriented. Her mind had essentially shut down in order to block out all the stress and trauma. Her eyes could see, but nothing was registering in her mind. Kallik looked around again, feeling as she had been drugged, and slunk forward a few paces. Night had fallen, she couldn’t see well as her eyes hadn’t adjusted – she didn’t need to see, not when her thoughts had been flashing past her minds’ eye. Kallik blinked, and she continued to walk. Up ahead, she saw a white shape. ”Stop.” she growled out, surprised by her own voice. It held remnants of her old self, her mute, uneducated self. Her words were slightly harsh, jarring in her ears. Kallik slipped over towards the white brute, and she eyed him. ”You…are not Descai.” she growled bluntly, scenting him. ”What’s your name?” Kallik questioned, looking him over once or twice. She was taller than him, but he was much bigger than her. She could tell that he had been hoping to enter the territory unseen. He probably would have, if Kallik hadn’t crossed his path or had not looked up. The femme sat in front of him, blocking his path. She didn’t know what she wanted with him or why she had approached; she only knew that she had. ”I’m Kallik.” She spoke suddenly, offering the wolf her name. She didn’t bother smiling – she wasn’t sure that she could smile, not at the moment at least. She didn’t even bother bowing her head or giving him any other sort of greeting. Kallik was Kallik; she didn’t bother with fancy stuff or proper greetings or anything like that. She would do as she pleased. Words;; 424 Muse;; Eek. Mood;; Lost, confused, blunt. Notes;; Yeah. If he didn’t pick up the pace, he would definitely be caught. But if he moved too quickly, he would certainly be caught. He had to find the safe median between the two. And he was probably already there. The brute grumbled to himself, pausing as the noise seemed to echo around him. Nope. Nothing. He was still alone. He let out a noiseless sigh, shaking his head. If he were one of the pack members, he would find himself very suspicious. But he hoped he didn’t pose a big enough threat to alarm any of them. The fewer encounters with others, the safer they would be. And he wasn’t being conceited. The brute paused suddenly, sniffing the air. He could have sworn he heard something. He listened, ears swiveling atop his head. Still just the wind. No wait! Amyn turned his head, golden orbs scanning the immediate area. He wasn’t alone, he knew that much. He sniffed the air once again. If there was another nearby, they were downwind from him. He felt the urge to let out a warning growl, but managed to catch the sound in his throat. His mind may have been playing tricks on him, but he didn’t want to give away his position. Maybe it was an elk or a doe. If he startled the game, they would cause a ruckus, casting a spotlight on his location. No. It was better to pretend as if his skin wasn’t crawling from the idea of being watched. Then, like the sound of a bullet, came a simple command. Stop. The brute froze, more because of the command than because of the presence of another wolf. Images flashed through his head. Blood. Pain. Death. Humans. Chains. Cages. Flames. Torment. The femme appeared before him, but he didn’t truly see her. Not at first. She was a haze in the present while he was momentarily lost in the past. Her words however—or one in specific—managed to drag him back to reality. His hackles were raised, tail arched over his back slightly, and a low growl was ripping from his throat. When he finally came fully to his senses, he quickly adjusted his posture, dropping his tail and silencing his growl. The fur on his back smoothed back down and the brute cleared his throat. He focused intently on the creature before him, doing a double-take and blinking several times. She was quite beautiful, painfully so for Amyn. Her fur was a beautiful mix of cream and russet, with a few hints of black here and there. And her eyes... They were a deep jade color, peering at him carefully, as if judging what he might do next. She reminded him of a femme he had once loved dearly, a femme he let go because she didn’t love him. Naomi was smaller than the femme before him, and her fur was a bit darker, but it was as if she was standing before him once again. Or this could be that pup? he thought, hopeful. But he knew she wasn’t. That pup had died in his embrace. If she had survived that mess, he wouldn’t have ever let her out of his sight. It isn’t her, he assured himself, casting a sad gaze to the ground. The femme then asked his name, sounding neither demanding nor truly disinterested. She had said something about Descai, which had yanked him from his past. Could he have been found out? It wasn’t hard to figure out he was trespassing, but this femme didn’t smell like the land around either. He could have accused her of the very same. But regardless. She asked him a question, and he wasn’t the type to leave someone hanging. “Amyntas, ma’am,” he said, dipping his head in greeting. “May I inquire your name?” But he needn’t ask. The femme came in front of him, perching in his path, appearing to study him. She then gave her name. Kallik. It was an interesting name, but the brute supposed his was as well. Even so, the name suited her. He smiled warmly. “Kallik,” he murmured, listening closely as it rolled off his tongue. “A beautiful name.” He then wondered what she was doing in these lands. She couldn’t possible belong to the dangerous pack? Then again, a beauty such as hers was one to treasure. Maybe the alpha brute needed something pretty to look at every now and then. Amyn shook his head. That wasn’t the issue here. “I am just passing through these lands.” He eyed Kallik warily, wondering if she would really try to stop him. “Would it be too much to ask you keep this a secret from the brute of these lands? I doubt he’ll appreciate my presence without first announcing it.” Amyn dipped his head as a sort of farewell and stepped around the femme. He was only a little further to the southern border. If he didn’t have any further interruptions, he could make it there in an hour. She felt more like her old self, as if the tragedies of the current world was somehow reverting her. She felt powerful, and suddenly…alive. As if she had all the power in the world. It was as if Kallik were meeting Vorilye for the first time once more, and she was toying with his body and mind. As the brutes’ hackles rose, Kallik’s did as well. It had been a long time since she had fought another wolf, and her blood was suddenly racing underneath her skin. A snarl might have ripped through her chest, had the brute not calmed down as soon as he did. A strange feeling of disappointment rose within the young mother, and she let her hair fall back upon her frame. Kallik’s eyes narrowed as the brute stared at her. Blinking. What was he blinking for? Could he not see her? She snorted quietly, raising her head. She was in her element. Although her vocabulary and hunting skills had grown immensely, Kallik still had very little knowledge of pack etiquette, and it her mind, this was her home. She was simply allowed to be dominant here. As the brute spoke his name, Kallik did nothing. She didn’t truly need his name. Besides, he was an intruder, and she had half a mind to call Vorilye. But no…she wanted to play with him, if only for a while. Kallik chuckled a bit, shaking her head. ”The alpha of these lands named me when we first met. I was…nameless. I owe him; he gave me the chance at a normal life.” she told Amyntas, eyes sparkling slightly, a hint of malice glittering in her emerald orbs. Something had overcome Kallik, taken control of her. Perhaps she was just in shock, or maybe the events of her life leading up to this very moment had caused her to go insane. She was different, at least for the moment. She felt…a sort of darkness filling her soul. She shook it away. As Amyntas moved passed her, Kallik immediately got up and blocked his path again, standing very close to him; half of her body was curved so that her hind quarters were parallel with the brute while her front was turned and facing him. ”Oh I’m not so sure about that,” she whispered, a chuckle coming from her open maw. ”You see, the sire of my children would not appreciate my keeping this private… Perhaps I should take you to him?” Kallik crooned softly, eyes still glittering. The femme edged closer to him, forcing him back a few paces. Perhaps she was coming into heat early again. She wasn’t sure, but there was a part of her that was craving the brute before her eyes. Kallik gave him an alluring smile, her tail stroking his side. She moved to face him fully again, a questioning sort of look upon her face. She wasn’t exactly sure what had gotten into her – perhaps she just needed to feel good for once, any sort of pleasure would appease her poor, shattered heart. Either way, Kallik was not exactly sane, not now. Her heart was sick, and it was starting to affect her words and actions, her mind. When he had gone into his lapse, she had matched his angry stance. She returned to normal as he had, though she almost seemed...disappointed? Had she wanted to fight him? A shudder ran down the brute’s spine. That was a battle he would avoid at all costs. There was little doubt in his mind that he could easily end this femme without even trying. Hell, if he truly lapsed, he probably wouldn’t even blink as he watched the life leave her eyes. Another shudder. He shook his head rigorously, trying to get his thoughts to return to normal. He couldn’t lapse. Not here. Not now. Amyn was almost hoping Kallik would say she was pleased to meet him. Or even acknowledge that he’d give her his name. Instead, she sat there, staring at him. The brute sighed. It really shouldn’t have surprised him. The rumors were obviously true, if this femme wasn’t proof enough. Still. She seemed kind enough to have a conversation with him. Without having been asked, Kallik went on to explain her name and where she got it from. Her words puzzled Amyn. How can a wolf be nameless? Even the wolves at the facility—where the humans gave them numbers instead of names—had true names from their previous life. The brute shook his head again, fighting the memories flooding his system. Knock it off! He needed to leave. Now. But before he could get even a few steps past the femme, she quickly blocked his path. She was close. Very close. And her hindquarters were practically pressing against him. His eyes instinctively darted towards her enticing rump, but he politely ripped them away once again, eyes locking with hers. What exactly was she doing? Preventing him from leaving, clearly, but did she need to use such measures? The brute furrowed his brow as she chuckled, eyes snapping wide at the words that followed. “I-I beg your pardon?” He blinked a few times, thinking he heard wrong. “The alpha....and you?” There was simply no way. This femme was the alphess of these lands? But the scent markers... Amyn lifted his nose to the air, inhaling deeply. No. There were only one set of markers, all male. And this femme hardly smelled as if she belonged to the land. Was she playing with him? Amyn tilted his head to one side and then the other. He really wouldn’t put it past her to do such a thing. Kallik forced him back as she edged closer, and he stepped even further from her so she was no longer brushing against him. She was acting strangely, like she was in heat. But it was a little late—or early, depending on viewpoint—in the year to be in heat. She was definitely just toying with him. And he didn’t particularly appreciate that. Given that he was on her land, however, he did nothing to stop her advances. He just wasn’t about to show any interest in her. “Would you really turn me in to your alph—” He cut himself short, clearing his throat. If the two had pups together, surely they would have a closer bond? “—to your mate, I mean. I don’t wish to cause any friction within your pack. I just wish to pass through these lands.” As he said that, Amyn’s eyes darted over the femme to the south. She chuckled huskily, leaning in towards him, his scent filling her nostrils. It was a pure scent, fully of the male and without any cloyed pack scent upon him. He smelled sweet, like a rose. Kallik’s smile twisted into a smirk as Amyntas stuttered out a question. She enjoyed playing with him, making him think that she was the Alphess, that she had power here. Oh how she loved power…it was in her blood, to dominate. Her thoughts flickered back to her brother. Her younger self stood before him, she whispered into his ear, filling his body with poison that ate at his soul before she tore the life from his throat… ”Why yes, Amyntas, you are quite right…” Kallik breathed, edging ever closer. ”The alpha and I… we have children you know…they are nearly eight months old…” Despite the fact that she was speaking of her pups, Kallik had a teasing note in her voice, as if she wanted the Arctic brute. ”We have five pups, a pair of twin brutes and three femmes.” she continued, completely oblivious to the fact that two of her daughters were dead. Surely her sanity was in question? She wasn’t sure – it could have been plain grief. Kallik grinned at him again, pulling away abruptly. She stood in front of him, about to speak before he started to talk of being turned in to Vorilye. At the word “mate”, Kallik’s mind froze. Her body stiffened, and she seemed to be at a loss for words. Amyntas’ words had broken the demons’ spell upon Kallik’s fragile mind. She blinked a few times, her eyes dulling and her smiling falling from her maw. ”Mate?” she blurted out, a fearful tone entering her voice. She gazed wildly around and then seemed to shrink as she crouched low to the ground. Kallik let out a pained whimper and clawed at the ground, her body convulsing from her recent traumas. She let out a few gasps as tears welled up in her deep, emerald eyes. ”He drove me out! ‘Bastard pups’ he called them!” Kallik wailed, starting to hyperventilate. She shoved her entire, bulky frame against the ground, claws still scoring deep marks in the grass. ”Tibiki! Karima!” she sobbed, finally breaking. The full truth had finally dawned on her – she had lost to of her children. They could never come back. Taqqiq had left, Kyra had, too. All she had left was Tike – Vorilye had never cared for her. ”My children!” she moaned, crying hysterically. She didn’t care what the other wolf thought of her, the pain was too much. Weeping desperately, Kallik tried to calm down by taking deep breaths. The only thing that happened was that she started having a panic attack. She gasped for air, writhing on the ground. Her eyes rolled into her head. As soon as it had all started, it stopped – Kallik lay quite still, hardly even breathing. She was on her side, her belly facing the brute called Amyntas, and her eyes stared straight past him. Surely it would be over soon. Everything would be over. She could end it herself, right now. This femme was toying with Amyn, and clearly enjoying every moment of it. When she’d leaned closer to him, inhaling his scent, his entire body went rigid. He didn’t know what would happen to this femme if his instincts took over. Would he be able to control the dangerous side of himself or would it be unleashed mid-stride, ending her life in one fell swoop? No. He couldn’t have that. The brute gritted his teeth, edging away from her again. But the further he attempted to get, the closer the femme would edge towards him. She was driving him further into Descai territory, further from his target. He needed to get the situation under control. Quickly. Hearing about her pups brought a wave of memories to the surface. Naomi had also had five pups. Same gender ratio as well... The brute studied her closely again, reassuring himself that this was not Naomi, or the pup that had died. He felt, if she stuck around for an extended period of time, that he would be assuring himself of that quite often. She wasn’t Naomi. She was Kallik, mate to the alpha of Descai. By extention, that made her alphess of Descai. Amyn shuddered again as the thought crossed his mind. He probably should have gone through Kamari... Lucky for Amyn, the femme seemed to take into account the fact that he kept backing away from her. She pulled away from him, a grin on her maw. What was she planning? But his unspoken question went unanswered. As he spoke of the alpha brute, the femme before him froze up. Her eyes lost the playful, if not lusty, spark they’d had, and grew a touch wider, as if she was actually seeing him for the first time. The grin faded just as quickly as that spark, alarming the brute. Had he said something wrong? She startled him further when she croaked out that single word, the one he could hardly believe was true. And then everything went to pot. The femme went into a sort of frenzy, eyes darting around in absolute fear, as if something was out to get her. She pawed at the ground insistently, whimpering and shaking. Amyn watched, helpless, as tears filled the femme’s eyes. She wailed, hysterical and hyperventilating, saying something about ‘bastard pups’. “Hold on,” he muttered soothingly, stepping forward. “You need to relax. Hey!” But no amount of soothing words seemed to reach the poor femme. The tears rolled down the femme’s beautiful cheeks and all Amyn could do was watch as she literally fell apart at his feet. He assumed, by the names she cried out, that something had happened to her pups. A pain surged through his heart. He knew what it was like to lose something so dear to the heart. From a mother’s standpoint however... He couldn’t even imagine. All of a sudden, the femme grew quite still. Amyn had to strain himself to hear that she was, in fact, breathing. But she wasn’t blinking, just staring past him into nothingness. He took a cautious step forward, as if his very movement would cause another frantic attack, but she remained still. The brute looked around to make sure the alpha brute wasn’t at the fringes of the area before he turned back to the femme with a deep sigh. What she needed right now was comfort. Something terrible must have happened to cause such damage. And if it could help... Amyn walked around the femme, making sure to keep his eyes locked on hers. If she decided to get up all of a sudden, he wanted to make sure he was a good distance from her. Frantic femmes were worst than any bloodthirsty brute he’d ever encountered. They probably frightened him more than anything as well. But still, she seemed to remain still. With a deep sigh, Amyn brought himself right beside her, lying on the ground. He scooted as close to her as he could, brushing his tail along her rump. He then brought his muzzle down near hers, whimpering lightly. He would hardly consider her a friend, let alone an acquaintance, but in that moment, she needed someone to be there for her. She didn’t respond to anything, she was lost inside of herself, her mind forcing her to relive those last moments that had been her family, alive and well. Scared, obviously, because of the cougar, but they weren’t in any danger of dying! Kallik could handle it! She knew how to fight! But…she had frozen up, just as she was right now. Her body had refused to respond, her less-than-motherly instincts telling her to fight or flee. If only she had chosen sooner. But no, Vorilye had stepped in; he made the cougar go away. Kallik still wasn’t sure what had happened, how Karima and Tibiki ended up behind the cougar, when Tibiki fled into the dens, Karima already there. Kallik could see, as if it were a distant memory, when in fact it had happened little more than a day prior, her two girls being ripped to pieces. A throat slashed, the rich, crimson blood staining the ground, whilst the other was torn to shreds… Kallik’s eyes flickered a tiny bit as she found Amyntas close to her again. What was he doing? She didn’t care. She didn’t even have the strength to attack him, even now when she wanted so desperately the ending of her life. ”My children.” she whispered, almost silently. Her lips hadn’t moved, but still her voice issued in the silence. ”Dead. A cougar…and then he left…she followed…and now it’s only my oldest son.” she continued hoarsely, still staring off into the past. Taqqiq’s secret whispered through her ears, and she moaned once more, curling into the Arctic wolf at her side. Kallik could never admit it, nor would she ever acknowledge the brutes’ closeness, but she needed his comfort. Even though he was a stranger and a trespasser upon Vorilye’s lands, and the brute that had snarled at her minutes before…she allowed his comfort. Kallik whimpered, nuzzling her face into his fur. It was warm and it dried her tears, and strangely, his scent calmed her. She shuddered at the thought of Vorilye emerging into this scene, and she curled herself more firmly against the white brutes’ body. It was not hard, as he was longer than her – she cuddled against his side quite snugly. She could have been a pup all over again, and the white brute could have been her mother. That visual shattered quite quickly, and Kallik let out a giggle that didn’t suit her at all. She never giggled. The Mackenzie Valley female sighed, her body seeming to deflate as every feeling within her vanished. She was empty again. Her green eyes looked at the brutes’ golden ones, but she didn’t smile. She simply stared, transfixed. Kallik had never really stared at a brute before, not like she was now. It was curious, her behavior, but she believed it to be completely acceptable. Without even thinking, Kallik murmuringly blurted, ”Will you be…my friend?” She had never asked for a friend before, let alone had one. Surely Vorilye despised her, and her pups couldn’t exactly be counted. She had never really known anyone else, either. As if she were nothing more than a pup, Kallik whined, ”I can have a friend, right? I didn’t mean for things to go so wrong…it’s all my fault…” The poor femme was feeling terribly conflicted and confused, not to mention pathetic. She felt as if no one wanted her, and no one cared. Kallik sighed, morose, and she finally broke her gaze away from the other wolfs’. She was lost in her mind, not sure if she was even awake. It could have all been a dream… Words;; 611 Muse;; Great. He couldn’t just leave her all by her lonesome when she was in such a distraught state. Doing so would be worse than killing another wolf in his reverted state, possibly worse. Definitely worse. He wouldn’t be able to live with himself if he simply abandoned her. His father had certainly taught him better than that. Luckily, though, the femme seemed content with allowing him to lay beside her. She spoke up, this time speaking of her children. At first, Amyn believed she’d lost them all, as Naomi had. But then she said something about an oldest son. So at least one of her pups still remain, Amyn thought with a sigh. The femme let out a low moan, curling up against him. He adjusted his posture to give her a little more room, though there wasn’t any real need. His body was longer than hers, and in her curled state, she fit quite easily beside him. As he lay there, Amyn was taken into another memory, this one bittersweet. Just over a year ago now, he had been in this same position, though the one at his side was the happiest creature in existence. She climbed all over him, gnawing on his feet and ears, yipping and barking happily at her siblings. Being pupsitter had been a boring task, but he was glad he could at least say he had those memories. When any of those pups had been fearful, they would hide behind him, peeking their heads out as the curiosity chewed away at them. Naptime brought them to his side, piled atop one another as they snuggled into his mass. He had been their place of comfort when their parents were away. Though the femme at his side was no puppy, he could still offer her that same safety. Amyn lifted his head as he curled his tail around her. If something were to sneak up on them, he wanted to at least have an appropriate amount of time to react. His eyes scanned the area, sharp and attentive, focusing on nothing and everything all at the same time. The femme whimpered, causing his ear to swivel towards her, and when she nuzzled into him, he looked down at her, smiling. “That’s it,” he murmured softly, licking the top of her head. “Just relax...” The brute chuckled lightly as she inched even closer, her head buried in his side. He went back to his surveying, ear swiveling back to the femme as she let out a giggle. A warm smile crossed his maw, but he kept his eyes up. At least she wasn’t crying any longer. The brute looked down at Kallik once again when she sighed deeply. She moved back enough to lock eyes with him. Amyn squirmed a little under her gaze, completely unsure of why she was staring at him so intently. But there was no malice in those emerald pools, just puplike curiosity. Despite every instinct telling him to, the brute kept his eyes on hers, waiting for her to look away first. Until she blurted out what she did. His eyes went wide and he stared at her stunned. “Your...friend?” He had purposely avoided becoming close with other wolves, and now she wanted him to be her friend? Just as he was about to deny her request, she spoke up again, wrenching the brute’s heart. Had she blamed herself for the death of her pups? He knew how that felt, he truly did. She broke the stare, looking away from him. Amyn nuzzled her gently, as if to show his empathy. He didn’t know all of what she had gone through—from what she’d said, she probably watched the death of her pups—but he understood the loss. It was painful, more painful than the many times he’d been wounded in battle. Each breath felt like a knife stabbing into his heart. Oh he knew. It was something he would never forget, never in his lifetime. “If that is what you wish, Kallik... I will be your friend.” He felt as if he had just signed his soul away to a seductive temptress. Would being her friend cause the alpha brute to grow jealous? Would their friendship be able to hold if he wandered the land? But he didn’t let any of his thoughts show on his face. For now, he would be Kallik’s friend. Perhaps it was an in-the-moment kind of deal. Maybe, once she regained herself, the femme would call off the whole deal and run him out. He didn’t want to just leave her like this... Especially with the alpha brute not around. Thinking of the Descai alpha caused Amyn’s blood to boil. Lying beside him was the dam of the alpha’s pups. She was broken and sad and clearly in need of a friend. So where was this so-called great brute? Why was such a huge task of comfort put on Amyn’s shoulders? Not that he minded. The alpha brute should have been at her side, especially if they had just lost their pups. What kind of father would be off doing other things instead of mourning for his children? Amyn growled deep in his throat, but quickly cut himself off, not wanting Kallik to get nervous. The brute made a decision, right then and there: When he encountered the Descai alpha, he would give him a piece of his mind. A male should never leave his mate on her own in such a condition. Amyn simply wouldn’t stand back and watch as the femme slowly withered away to nothing. He would be her sole protector. She let out a strangled cry before he settled again, and she understood – at least somewhat – that he had merely been shifting to make her more comfortable. She sighed, and it sounded happy and sad at the same time. Kallik was pleased – albeit slightly – that she had the company of another, even if it was a complete and utter stranger. But she was sad because she didn’t really know what was going on. Why was this stranger here? Why was Kallik here? Where were Vorilye and Tike? As the brute curled his fluffy tail around Kallik, she sighed again, deeply this time, but it was a sigh that said all of the negative feelings were leaving her body. Vorilye had done absolutely nothing to alleviate her agony of losing two of her children to a cougar, and two others to the night. He didn’t even speak to her…not once was any one of her questions answered. He just avoided responding to her. Kallik didn’t understand that, but she did understand that she was curled up quite intimately with a complete stranger, and she was feeling a little better. A soft lick to the top of her head made Kallik grin into the Arctic brutes’ thick white fur. As the weather got colder, their fur would thicken, and being able to bury her face into a thick field of white warmth was very appealing. Kallik’s ears twitched slightly as his voice broke the silence, calm and gentle. She wasn’t sure if she would ever be able to understand the way other wolves’ worked. She couldn’t understand what was so wrong about their scene, two strangers laying together, the femme seemingly trying to get herself absorbed into the brute. All she wanted was a little comfort. And that was okay. ”I can relax…” Kallik murmured quietly as she stared at him. She might have looked as if she was tired, but in reality she wasn’t sure what emotion to show, and settled instead on showing nothing. And showing no emotion looked quite similar to being tired. As Amyntas’ eyes widened and he repeated her question, Kallik nodded solemnly. All she’d ever wanted was a friend. She had tried to be Vorilye’s friend, in the way Kallik knew how to be. She still didn’t know what qualified as a “friend”. But in her depressed state, Amyntas fit the bill pretty damn well. Kallik smiled very slightly at the brutes’ nuzzle, and she licked his maw. ”You’re a nice friend.” she said, her eyes lighting up once more, but this time they showed pleasure. The multi-hued femme nuzzled his chest, just as she had Vorilye’s so long ago, and like that night with the alpha, she pressed her ear into Amyntas’ chest, listening. His heart was racing, she could tell, his blood pumping faster than normal. She pulled away, curiosity lining her face. ”Your heart is too fast.” she stated simply, getting up and shaking herself off. Kallik smiled at him and jerked her head back towards the north, saying, ”Come on. I will take you to the pack dens. You can meet my pup.” How was she to know that her newest friend was so desperate to leave the terra? Kallik spoke as if meeting Tike were a treat to the brute. She sighed deeply once or twice, causing a smile to cross the brute’s maw. He was pleased that she was relaxing. The idea itself humored the brute. How many wolves would do as he is now for a complete stranger? Most would bare their fangs and growl defensively if a stranger grew this close to them. Amyn was generally among that group. Had he not backed away from the femme as she advanced towards him? If she had attempted to lay beside him as he was her, he probably would have gotten up and walked away by then. But she remained, somewhat fixed, to his side. Not that he minded at all. She was warm, comforting in the slight chill of the night. Winter was rapidly approaching, and even now his own fur was beginning to thicken. Soon, he would be a big, white, fluffy mass of fur. The perfect source of heat. He wondered, with a chuckle, if Kallik would be snuggled like this in the colder months. Or, perhaps, she would be up against that brute of hers. If, by then, the brute hadn’t apologized, however, Amyn wouldn’t allow it. To lay beside the one that loves you is a sort of privilege. To have her hurting this badly and not be at her side was simply disgraceful. Amyn’s imagination ran wild, coming up with the worst possible personality for a wolf he’d never even met. He wasn’t usually judgmental, but it kept him from rising to his feet and tracking the good-for-nothing brute down in a lapsed frenzy. No matter how much he disapproved of the other brute’s action, he couldn’t simply kill him. It was rude, for one. And if he did manage to succeed, wouldn’t that make him alpha of these lands? Amyn did not want that. Far too many lives under his control. It was a dangerous notion. He was glad when she spoke, sounding as relaxed as she felt beside him. He offered her a warm smile, a relieved look gleaming in his eyes. Yes. She was much calmer than she had been. And perhaps more normal than when she had first appeared. Both cases—the lusty femme and the mournful femme—had completely vanished from Kallik. She still seemed rather sad to Amyn, but there was nothing wrong with being sad. It was healthy, even, after what she had gone through. Far more healthy than being lusty or frantically mournful. Her compliment made him chuckle nervously. “I’m glad you think so.” I certainly don’t believe so... It had been so long since he had played the role of ‘friend’. He was somewhat pleased that the basics hadn’t been lost to him. As she nuzzled into his chest, Amyn tried to look down at her. She was no longer crying or upset, so why was she doing such a thing? Was she bashful? No. She made a comment on his heartbeat, causing it to jolt slightly in surprise. Amyn quickly averted his gaze. “My heartbeat is normal,” he lied. He couldn’t let on what he thought of her so-called mate. Would a friend feel such animosity like this? Possibly. He could probably play it off if she truly wished to know. When she rose to her feet, he turned back, golden gaze worried. “What’s the matter?” Amyn froze at her words. She wanted to take him to the very heart of the territory? That was the very last thing he wanted. The femme didn’t seem to notice or care that he was panicking. She even spoke as if meeting her pup was the most amazing gift she could offer him. He disagreed, shaking his head. “That isn’t the best idea, Kallik,” he murmured softly, not wanting to upset her. “The alpha brute will not be pleased to see me so close to the dens, I would think...” He kept the word ‘mate’ out of the conversation, remembering the chain-reaction it had caused the last time he’d uttered the word. “Perhaps we could meet on unclaimed territory? Bring your son and I could meet him there.” Even though he didn’t sound or appear it, Amyn was beginning to panic. This femme was already fragile. If he said one wrong word, she would go ballistic again and he would have no other option than to do as she wished. He was allowed one secret, she supposed. After all, she had a secret – technically it was Taq’s secret, but as she was keeping it…didn’t it make it hers, too? – Kallik shook all these thoughts away, feeling as if her brain was getting clogged up and had the cold. As her buzzing thoughts became silent once again, she heard Amyntas speak. Not the best idea? But…friends stayed together, and if Kallik was going to stay in Descai…didn’t that mean Amyntas had to stay with her? Puzzled, Kallik tilted her head to the side. ”But…but he…the pack needs members. There’s never been another male here. But Tike is here. I told Tike to come here…” she stammered, feeling confused. She wouldn’t have been surprised if her words hadn’t made much sense, either. Kallik licked her lips and tried again. ”Descai could use another member. He won’t mind, I can tell him I found you. Because I did find you. And I can…I can tell him to let you join.” she told Amyntas, moving towards him again. She gave him a gentle nudge in the direction of the mines. As Amyntas spoke of meeting Tike, Kallik merely shook her head. ”No,” she said matter-of-factly. ”There’s no unclaimed territories nearby – except for the desert but it’s really hot there, and I’ve heard wolves calling…I think they want to make a pack.” Kallik continued, oblivious to the brutes’ panic. She was blathering, talking just because that’s what her brain was telling her to do. ”And Tike wouldn’t like the desert. And he would probably come after us again. You know he wanted to kill us, he tracked us.” Kallik’s voice was buzzing in her own ear, not making much sense to the femme. She acted as if Amyntas knew who ‘he’ was, and that he would automatically know her story. ”We were all in Kamari, you know…” she started, pushing Amyntas along as she walked, talking in a strange dreamy voice. ”And then a cougar came, then he came and – well, it doesn’t matter. I only have one pup now.” Kallik finished abruptly, not sounding very sad about only having one pup. She should have explained, but she was just under too much strain at the moment to be able to make sense of anything. Smiling at Amyntas, Kallik said, ”I like it here. It is good to be home. Her words made little sense to the brute. If he had to guess, the alpha brute rarely accepted brutes to keep the competition down. It was a reason Amyn could completely understand. The more femmes he kept around, the more selective of his mate he could be, thus ensuring the strongest bloodline for the heirs to his pack. It was a very logical system, just one Amyn didn’t personally approve of, especially if Kallik was the example of how he treated his mate. Golden eyes locked onto the femme as she continued, watching as she moved towards him again. He swallowed hard, remaining in his lounged position, turning his head as she walked behind him. She spoke as if she had true leverage over the brute of the lands. But if he treated her as poorly as he did...was that the truth? Could she actually make the brute allow him to join? Amyn was skeptical. The femme gave him a nudge, as if to get him to rise, but he remained on the ground. Trying to convince her to allow him to leave was clearly a wasted effort. None of his words seemed to be reaching her. She was adamant, that’s for sure. Amyn’s panic rose slightly as he faced the situation. She wasn’t going to relent, no matter what he did. And if he just up and left, she would probably break again. He refused to allow himself to be the reason for a second meltdown for the femme. To keep that from happening, he would have to do as she pleased. The idea terrified him greatly. She was still talking as he sat in revelation, though he wasn’t too sure what it was she was talking about. She kept mentioning ‘he’ and ‘us’ and ‘we’, as if Amyn understood every word. He nodded appropriately, but was completely lost. When she got to the end, she didn’t seem all that upset to only have one pup remaining to carry on her legacy. It made even less sense to Amyn than her story did. But it was too late to try and understand. He let out a deep, shaky sigh before turning to the femme. “You should realize going in that this may be the last time we will speak so calmly. Your brute may very well decide to kill me on the spot.” He rose to his feet once he was sure she heard him, sighing deeply. “But, because we are friends, I will do as you wish.” He had no real interest in meeting her son, nor really to join the pack, but she needed him for the time being. Maybe, if he was lucky, the alpha brute would not be at the den. And maybe he could convince the femme’s son to take over the comfort role. Then he might be able to sneak out without a hitch. He took a few steps in the direction the femme had been nudging him before turning back and smiling. “If we’re going to be going, you should probably lead the way. I don’t know where I’m supposed to be heading.” It took little more than that to get the femme at his side. He walked close enough to brush against her, just so she knew he was still there. With a ragged breath, Amyn looked into the distance. The last thing he had wanted when he ventured into these lands was to become a member of the pack. Yet here he was, walking side by side with the alpha brute’s mate, heading straight into the heart of the territory. By dawn, would he be a member of Descai or would he be dust in the wind? A shudder ran down the brute’s spine as he continued in silence beside Kallik.
