Kallik was the Renegade Descai, a title she had held proudly for the few months before the birth of her pups. But now, she was not a renegade, never had she need The Deserter. Kallik had been run out due to Vorilye’s blindness, his cold, cruel, black heart. It had not been her fault. It had been his. Despite everything, she still cared for the brute that had sired her first litter. Even though it was painfully obvious to everyone but the Mackenzie femme that Vorilye cared nothing about her, she couldn’t help but stay attached. Kallik had been loyal to him, and she still was, if only for the fact that she needed someone to teach her and care for her.
The russet femme jogged through Descai lands, leading the way to the mines that served as the packs’ den site. Kallik had only ever been there once, when Vorilye had called a pack meeting. She had met Alanna there, and Angel. Alanna, the Omega, had tried to start a fight just because Kallik sat in the wrong place! A near-mute femme, who knew nothing of how a pack worked, or what a rank really meant, had set next to the brute that, just a half hour before, she had mated with! If only Vorilye had explained to her earlier what was expected of her, nothing would have happened. She could have stayed. Her children would not be dead. The others would not have left.
But sadly, there was no changing the past. It was the present that mattered, and the future to an extent. To Kallik, a future was never visible – everything depended on the here and now. And now, well, she just happened to have an Arctic brute following her as she led him to the mines. Kallik stopped in the clearing just outside of the old mine, and sat down. ”I’m not sure where the alpha is.” she said quietly, now in her right mind; the walking in silence had allowed her to think and breathe normally, and for the most part, she had her head on straight. Kallik knew what would happen to her if she let slip Vorilye’s name.
Glancing around her, she wondered if Vorilye had even made it back into Descai. If not, she figured that they could just wait for him. She wasn’t aware that Vorilye had a beta, or that Alanna had left, not even that Tike had actually made it here. Kallik sighed softly, offering Amyntas a small smile. ”Thank you,” she said quietly, dipping her head to him. After all, they were both loners, and even they deserved some respect. ”For earlier. I am only sorry you had to see that. I..I have had much happen to me lately.” Kallik thought silently that her words were an understatement – way too much had happened to the poor femme, and she deserved a better life. If only she knew how to live another way.
Kallik lay wearily upon the ground, resting her muzzle on her paws. She closed her eyes, wondering what would happen now.
The arctic brute could hardly believe the turn of events. His midnight journey through the dangerous lands of Acerbus ended with him accompanying the closest thing the land had to an alphess. Never in his wildest dreams would he have imagined himself walking closer and closer to the dens of Descai. All he had wanted was safe passage. How had it ended up this way? Amyn glanced at the russet femme at his side. He must have been some kind of pathetic to have allowed her to manipulate him as she had. If the worst were to happen, could he bring himself to blame her for it?
No, probably not.
And how could he? Even from the brief conversation he’d had with the femme, he knew that she was still trying to put the pieces of her shattered soul back together. The glue she had used was hardly holding her together. If he made one wrong move, she would fall to pieces once again. And unlike the good-for-nothing brute that caused the breakage in the first place, Amyn would never just leave her to pick up the pieces alone. No. He couldn’t put the blame on such a fragile thing. If the worst should happen, he would handle it. As he always did.
A smile crossed the brute’s maw as he watched Kallik jog ahead. The closer they got to the den, the more pep filled her steps. She seemed truly happy to be home, and Amyn couldn’t take that happiness from her. He followed behind her at a normal pace, watching from the distance. The scent of the pack grew stronger with each step, but so long as he was with her, he truly believed he would be okay. What little leverage she had would at least be something. If another wolf had found him instead of her, he probably wouldn’t be standing where he was.
The journey came to an end in no time. Kallik was sitting in a small clearing looking around. Amyn followed suit, wondering what she was looking for. She muttered something about the alpha, causing the brute to tense. He looked around again, sniffing the air. It was pointless. The alpha brute’s scent was all around him. Not quite strong enough to be the wolf himself, but enough to keep Amyn on edge. The arctic brute’s uneasiness seemed to melt away as Kallik smiled at him, thanking him from what was clearly the bottom of her heart. He shook his head, sitting beside her. “You have nothing to apologize for, Kallik. Believe it or not, I do know what it’s like to lose a pup.” He kept to himself the fact that they weren’t his pups he had lost. It wasn’t something she needed to know as of yet.
The femme lowered herself to the ground and Amyn looked down in concern. There were no tears, no ragged breathing, no visible depression. She was simply tired, it would seem. The brute smiled, remaining in his seated position, brushing his tail against hers. He surveyed the area like a hawk, sniffing the air once in a while. He wouldn’t allow another wolf to sneak up on him as she had, the memory causing a smile to form on his maw once again. It was the first time a wolf had gotten the drop on him. All the more reason to remain at her side.

Irritation swarmed around Shayde like a cloud of killer bees. After dragging the unconscious femme from the beach all the way up the mines where the den was, she took it upon herself to show the twin brutes around. If they spoke the truth about the alpha being their father, she had no right to run them out of the territory. If she had, Alpha would have likely caused her some sort of harm She hadn’t the slightest idea how close to the pups he was, but they were blood. Blood is always thicker than water. And in this case, Shayde was the water rolling off the brute’s black pelt.
The thought alone saddened the red femme. She had a naïve assumption that she was closest to the brute than any other wolf she knew. Well, that was the case, wasn’t it? She hadn’t known these brutes until earlier. She probably was the closest to him. He had gone so far as to make her his beta, right? But looking at it now... It was as if she turned to him only to find him several strides ahead of her. He was keeping her at a certain distance and she was afraid she would never be able to catch up to him.
What bothered her most of all was that she cared! She had promised herself once she lost Amos that she would never give a damn about another wolf other than herself so long as she lived. Yet here she was, bummed that he hadn’t trusted her enough to give him her name or tell her about his pups. She didn’t want to go poking into his past, just as she would hate it if he did that same to her, but she hated being his beta and having very little to go by. Even when he left, he gave her no information as to where he was going. He simply left her in charge and vanished. And now she was dealing with three lone wolves, two of which may or may not be his sons.
Shayde let out a deep sigh as she grew closer to the mines. The brutes had wanted to have some private family time, so she left them to it. If they left the territory, she didn’t care. In fact, she kind of wished they would leave. Fewer hassles to deal with. One unconscious femme—who still had yet to give her name, let alone speak—and bubbly Angel were far more than Shayde could deal with all at once. A pounding behind the femme’s eyes caused her to groan. If only she was a Shaman, then she could find the proper remedy. But, knowing her luck, she would eat some poisonous plant and wind up dead within an hour. She could just sleep off the pain. Yes. That would be best.
As the mine came into view, the femme froze. There were two figures in the clearing just outside the entrance. Shayde quickly darted behind a large rock, peeking around it. They hadn’t noticed her yet. She growled quietly. “I give Angel one task: Watch the den. Can’t even do it properly.” After taking a deep breath, the Descai beta stepped forward, pride and dominance in every stride. Her eyes locked with those of the white brute sitting there and she allowed herself a moment of intimidation, hackles and tail raising. “State your purpose here. Now!” Her temper was already at the fringes of her rope from the earlier meeting with everyone. Now there were two more loners to add to the mix. And they were just a little too close to the den. Big mistake.

The red wolf who had been so rude at the shore had shone him and his brother around the territory not too long ago so, he had a right to be in the lands, right? Or at least until Vorilye came back. Then, his father would have to decide what to do with him. Would he reject him and take his brother instead like everyone else that he had ever known? Probably. Tike had never felt truly wanted. Not even his own sister wanted him to be near her. Was there something wrong with him? Was he like some defective prototype compared to his brother? Was he less than his brother? Was he less than everyone? Tike felt that way sometimes. One could hardly blame him with the way that others acted around him. No one ever said that they liked Taq better but, they always showed it in the way that he acted. He hoped that his father would be different. He didn't know his father until a few days ago and what he knew of him was that he was a defender and that he was kind to him.
Tike had been traveling to the den site to check some of it out. He hadn't been shown where the dens were but, not inside of them. He hoped that no one else would be there. It would be a hassle for him to have to explain why he was in there and what right he had to look around a bit. It wasn't like he was going to take anything, right? So, it shouldn't be a problem.
As he was getting closer and the pack's smell was getting stronger and stronger, Tike noticed wolves all around the den site. There was mother, the red fae who had shone him around and some new brute he had never seen before who was sitting way to close to his mother. Regardless of whether mother liked Taq better than himself, she was still his mother and it made him uncomfortable to have strange males being close with her. She was allowing it too which made it even worse. Didn't she care that he as well as Taq and Kyra were still puppies and she was their mother? Why was she with another male? It made Tike growl low in his throat. He was angry now. Though, he wasn't going to go over there yet. He wanted to see what was going on. The red fae whom he had figured out to be the Beta, was in a dominant and very proud stance. He wanted to know what was going on before entering their little conversation. He hoped that the Beta was yelling at the two for being so close when Kallik still had young pups. He lay low in the grass with his ears flattened to try to make himself less noticeable. Though, his eyes were like an owl when watching mice. He was hunting them in a way. But, not for their bodies. He was hunting them for their minds and hunting for information. He prayed that no one would spot him so that he would have to give up his little game and make actual conversation. This had been probably the most fun he had had since his sisters' deaths.
Angel was sane. It was a miracle. Her mind was clear of emotions; not even happiness was overwhelming her this time. The white wolf was perched on a small ledge on the hill above the den entrance, enjoying her mind’s freedom in the warm sunlight. It was a nice change from the darkness of the forest, and it was a good spying place too, as she was hidden from view by a few scraggly bushes and also by the alpha’s overpowering scent in the area. She was actually doing just as Shayde had asked her to – watching the den – so when the two strange wolves entered the clearing she saw them immediately.
The brute she didn’t recognise but the other she realised was Kallik, and her tail gave a soft thump on the rock beside her. She wondered what they were doing in the heart of the territory, especially since she was pretty sure that Kallik was no longer part of the pack. But maybe that was where the alpha had gone – to get her back, although if she knew anything about him, apologising wasn’t usually high on his list of things to do.
In any case, they weren’t harming anyone by being here so she decided to just wait until Vorilye showed up. He would know what was happening and be able to sort it all out.
It was all going pretty well, she thought, but then Shayde entered the clearing, aggressive as ever. Angel sighed lightly. She supposed that now was probably a good time to show herself, before some kind of fight took place. From her high viewpoint she could also see that one of the males she had met earlier on the beach was hidden in the grass, watching the others, although she decided it was probably best not to give him away because Shayde was grumpy enough as it was.
So Angel half-fell, half-scrambled down the side of the cliff and landed at its base with a soft thump. After rising to her paws, she gracefully approached the two wolves, tail waving slowly behind her. She felt relaxed in this situation, and her mind was unusually calm. Perhaps she could even have a decent conversation for once.
The beautiful white she wolf came to a stop a short distance from the three wolves and nodded politely to the Mackenzie femme.
“Hello Kallik. It is good to see you again. I’m sorry about Shayde’s behaviour; she’s the beta of our pack now, and she feels a little protective over the territory sometimes, even if you are the alpha’s mate. But who is this stranger you have brought with you?”
As soon as she had spoken of Vorilye, Kallik could see Amyntas tense his body. A small smile played upon her maw, and she even chuckled a little at him. Sure, Vorilye wasn’t the best brute around, but he wasn’t always hostile…he was just…wary. But when Amyntas sat beside her, Kallik’s worries over what Vorilye would do when he found the two of them vanished. So they were sitting close together, who cared? Kallik could always lie and tell Vorilye that she had met Amyntas long before, couldn’t she? The smile fell somewhat from her muzzle as Amyntas disregarded her apology and spoke of loss. She looked down, murmuring, ”I lost two pups, my oldest femmes. My firstborn was named Karima, and my second was Tibiki. A cougar attacked us.” Kallik smiled sadly, looking very bleak as she recounted what had happened days before.
She shook her head a little, trying to feel happy. ”I have three other pups. A set of twins and a runt. Tike is…here, somewhere. I haven’t crossed his path yet, but I told him to come here. As for Taqqiq…he left, shortly after the deaths of his sisters. Kyra, the runt, followed him. I know not where either of them are.” Kallik told Amyntas, lowering her gaze again. It was still hard to talk about it. It would have been easier, had her last two pups stayed. Kallik figured, though, that they were both grieving, and would turn up soon enough. The green-eyed femme rested her head against Amyntas’ side, as if it were the most normal thing in the world for two strangers to do. ”Did…did you have a mate, Amyntas? And you had pups?” she asked him quietly, turning her gaze upwards towards his again.
Kallik wanted to comfort him just as much as she wanted comfort. But before she could give him any kind words, a scent hit her nose. She pulled away from Amyntas and looked around, seeing a red female walking towards them. She sighed, wondering if the femme was a member of Descai. It turned out she was, for a moment later she stopped before the Mackenzie fae and her Arctic companion, and fur bristling. Kallik stood slowly, not wanting to give the femme any reason to attack. She took a deep breath before she growled quietly, ”My name is Kallik. I am sure you have heard of me… one of my children is here, and he is waiting for myself and his father, your alpha.”
Kallik would not allow this arrogant fae any sort of retort – she would make sure that the femme knew Vorilye had been wrong all along. She had always been in the right, she had never lied. ”Your alpha knows that I am here. As for my friend, he is looking to join the ranks of Descai.” Kallik added, purposefully brushing up against Amyntas, trying to tell him without giving him away that his best bet was to pretend he’d came to join instead of trespass. The femme took a deep breath, reminding herself to keep calm. She knew all about Descai, and all of them had nasty tempers and should be treated with the utmost caution. She tried to smile at the fae before her, but it merely turned out as something like a grimace. Thinking quickly, Kallik added, ”We came to the dens because I was unsure of where to find….the alpha.” She had to pause and mentally correct herself – she was used to calling him by name. ”I am also a former member, as I think you know? There has been much…chaos in my life, and the borders are no longer safe.” With that, Kallik fell silent, waiting.
It seemed that she didn’t have to wait long – a wolf that, for some reason, Kallik instantly recognized, had just walked up to them. She blinked a little at Angel, offering a nervous smile. ”Uh, hi Angel… it’s nice to see you, too.” At the mention of the word ‘beta’, Kallik’s eyes widened a little and she glanced back at Shayde. Looking back to Angel, Kallik laughed nervously. ”No, Angel…he isn’t my mate…he ran me out because he believed I was carrying another brutes’ pups, remember? But, this is Amyntas…he wants to join Descai. And I wish to return as well, with my child Tike.” Too much talking for Kallik. She sighed inwardly and fell silent. Now she had to wait.

Despite having done all he could not to speak about the topic, the femme seemed comfortable enough with him to share the details of the death of her pups. Amyn stiffened as she spoke, waiting for the waterworks and frantic pawing from before. But there was nothing of that, merely sadness filling the femme’s eyes. She must have been distraught before, Amyn deduced. Perhaps it was the silent, midnight stroll that cleared her head. Or perhaps it was the comfort of another living thing at her side. Amyn didn’t know, nor did he really care. She was better now than she had been. It was a start.
The femme rested against his side moments later, and if it had been any other wolf, Amyn would have stepped away. But he couldn’t bring himself to move an inch. If anything, his stance grew stronger, as if to ensure she knew she would never fall when he was near. At her innocent question, Amyn said nothing. He had a feeling she would bring it up, given the way he empathized with her. His story would come at another time for the femme at his side. For now, he pretended like he hadn’t heard her.
Not that it was too terribly difficult to do that. Amyn’s golden eyes had locked with those of a small red femme, approaching from dead ahead. He waited until after Kallik rose to follow suit, standing tall beside the russet femme. The red femme snarled out a command, as if she held some sort of power in these lands. Amyn’s heart thumped in his chest. Had the alpha brute claimed a new mate? He glanced down at Kallik as she tried to reason with the red femme. How would she react to such news?
As Kallik spoke, it was quite clear that the angry little femme didn’t appreciate the lack of response time. But she made no move to attack. Just yet. And if the little thing decided to lunge, Amyn would knock her back with as little force as possible. She couldn’t honestly think she stood a chance against two wolves far larger than she. His mind ticked strategically as he tried to pan out how the fight would go before the signs even made themselves known that she would attack. If there was to be a battle, he wanted as little blood shed as possible.
Another wolf came into the picture, though Amyn could hardly believe his eyes. She spoke about ‘our’ pack, as if she belonged to the dangerous wolves that roamed the land. But she was so polite! The red femme’s behavior was kind of expected, but hers? Kallik seemed to know the white femme, though the conversation was a little...off. The white femme scolded the red femme, calling her Shayde, before emphasizing that Kallik was the alpha’s mate. Amyn’s eyes widened slightly, darting towards the two conversing femmes. So he hadn’t moved on afterall... Given that Kallik had already taken the measures to introduce him, Amyn stayed silent, muscles tense for whatever was to happen next.

The two strangers were lucky the femme decided to speak up when she did. Shayde was oh so tempted to simply attack them. They were loners this close to the den and standing out in the open. Who would miss them? But the pretty femme spoke up, giving her name. Kallik? It wasn’t one Shayde recognized. She continued her low growling, quiet enough for the other femme to speak and be heard, but still loud enough for the two to know she meant business. She then spoke of her children, though she clearly didn’t realize both brutes were present. So they weren’t lying after all, huh? Shayde mused, equal parts irritated and relieved. If she had run them out like she originally planned, Alpha would have definitely struck her down. But they were telling the truth.
Damnit.
Just as she went to speak, the femme cut her off, causing a surge of anger to swell in the red femme’s chest. Did this femme not know proper conversation etiquette? You speak and then let the other party speak until you run out of topics. Continuing to monologue like this was rude, if not disrespectful, given her position. So what if the alpha was the sire to her pups? Why hadn’t they all been one happy family? Why had she run out on him? Shayde didn’t buy it. Her growling grew darker, as if to urge the femme to hurry her explanations so the blood bath could begin. Former member? I would think so. I don’t see the alpha doing such things with any femme that crosses his path. Shayde then gave that thought another moment in her head. No. Maybe he would. But that still didn’t explain the fact that she was no longer a member.
And, of course, just before Shayde could start throwing questions at the former Descai femme, Angel appeared. So she actually was doing as told... Shayde listened irritably as the bubbly femme apologized on her behalf. “Why do they need to know my rank, Angel? It isn’t like it matters much. They are not pack members, regardless of if they used to be.” Her red-brown gaze fell on the pretty femme, not bothering to sugar-coat the fact that she didn’t care for the femme. “If you had followed protocol—which you should know, given that you were part of this pack once before—you should have waited at the border and called to the pack. I would have given you a proper greeting and brought you into these lands.”
Based on her overall behavior—which hadn’t lightened in the least—the statement had little believable worth to it. Shayde knew it, but didn’t particularly care to emphasize the fact. They would believe what they wanted, and she doubted they would give her a second glance once all this was over. Her bristled fur slowly smoothed back down, and she strode forward cooly, eyes never straying from the pretty femme. The brute hadn’t said much during the ordeal and it hardly seemed like he was going to start any time soon. “Whether or not you’re telling the truth rests with the alpha and only—” Her eyes darted to Angel. “—the alpha. I was not given permission to accept new members, but I’ll allow you to stay here. For now.” She eyed the brute warily before looking to the pretty femme again. “Or is that not good enough for the alpha’s former mate?”
It was quite clear how Shayde felt about Kallik. She didn’t care if the femme had said Alpha ran her and the pups out. From the beta’s eyes, everything was her fault. The alpha had been in a mood before he left. And it was all because of a silly femme and her pups? That really astonished Shayde. She had a certain respect for the alpha that made her believe trivial things didn’t bother him.
She would have to have a long conversation with him once he returned.

Tike waited and stalked the adults whom he could only barely hear the conversations of. His eyes were wide and his heads and body were low. He remained motionless in the grass as he watched what was going on, wondering whether he wanted to know what was going on.
He spotted a white fae on top of one of the rocks who seemed to be watching out for her dens. Her upward view may have given him away. Especially when he was black and the grass was green. It was a wonder no one had noticed him yet. Or at least not called him out. This was a pretty fun game. Except for watching him with that white brute, that made him sick. How dare she? Tike considered getting up and leaving right then and there but, he wanted to see what the red female was going to do. Despite her temper and her attitude, she was actually very fun to watch and unpredictable. She did things that he wouldn't expect and, he sort of respected her for it. He didn't truly understand the job of a beta since he had been born into a pack land that had none. But, he knew that it was an important job.
His mother rested her head upon the white brute's shoulder. Yuck. It made Tike want to rush over there and demand that he get away from his mother before he ripped his throat out. But, this white male was larger than his father was who, was very big. Tike, was still in that awkwardly tall and lanky stage in his growth even though he was gaining weight every week.
The words that the adults spoke were muffled in Tike's ears even though he was straining them to hear. It wasn't an easy task when one was keeping them plastered to the back of their head.
After watching several more minutes of adults talking, Tike decided that he couldn't take this any more. Not that there talking was boring because he couldn't hear it all that well, but that he was done watching his mother all lovey on that brute.
He got up from the grass, not caring who saw him or if they saw him and began running from the mines. Anger burned his eyes red as he ran. He wanted to get as far away from there as he possibly could get. He wanted to kill something.

The beautiful white she wolf held a calm and relaxed posture, hoping that her aura would rub off a little on the others. There was a lot of tension in the air; tension which she believed didn’t need to be here. She was sane, and what she needed was a normal conversation to keep her that way. Right now it didn’t appear as if that was going to happen, and she hoped the alpha showed up soon so he could sort this mess out.
Angel was a bit confused at Shayde’s words. Why wouldn’t she want her rank to be known? The beta position was a very respectable one, after all, and it wasn’t like she was omega. That reminded her of Alanna. Hmm… she wondered where that aggressive she wolf had gone. It didn't matter though, because she probably wouldn't be coming back.
Kallik’s next words also confused her a bit. “Yes, I remember… But you had children together so you are mates.” Angel had never known of any wolves who’d split up. Her parents had loved each other and so they had children together – that was just how it worked, wasn’t it? If you didn’t love the other wolf then why would you be mates with him? Anyway, she was sure that Vorilye loved Kallik so that wasn’t a problem she needed to think about.
What was a problem though was what she was going to do about Kallik and Amyntas. If Shayde attacked them, Angel would have to help her because she was completely loyal to the pack and that meant supporting her superiors. But Kallik was still a part of Descai in Angel’s mind, and the other brute wanted to join. Angel smiled at the large white wolf. “It’s nice to meet you, Amyntas.” He was rather handsome, but he seemed to be already attached to Kallik so she doubted that the romance she’d always dreamed of was possible with him. Oh well, she supposed there were other males around, although Vorilye didn’t often let them even come near their lands and she wasn’t allowed to leave the territory. Anyway, Amyntas did seem like a nice guy and she could still be friends with him. Kallik was nice too, and she really hoped that the pair could be welcomed into the pack. She did however agree with Shayde that they should have howled at the border and waited there. Then her nice relaxing sunbathe wouldn’t have been interrupted and she wouldn’t be sitting here trying to pick sides.
“I guess we’ll just have to wait for the alpha to show up then.” She had decided it would be best not to call him by his name, at least until things had settled down a bit. Angel was a very honest wolf, and couldn’t lie to save her life, but this didn’t count as lying, did it?
Kallik could feel the Arctic brute’s tension as she sat, relatively calm, beside him, although the increasing tension in the air was causing her to become nervous. The only outward sign, however, was a flattening on the ears and a slight crouching towards the ground – she didn’t know Shayde, and if she’d met her last year, Kallik didn’t remember. Yet here she was, back in Descai, where she swore to herself that she would never go back, asking the beta for entry. Her name was probably still scum to the likes of Alanna, maybe even the packs around her. It was obvious that Akihra didn’t want her anymore… the words of her accusation still rang out in Kallik’s ears, and she clenched her eyes shut tight.
Taking a deep, steadying breath, Kallik half-glanced towards Amyntas before turning her gaze back to Shayde and Angel. The beta’s words were cutting into Kallik like sharp, pointed stones, and she had to force herself to not crouch down before her. The Mackenzie Valley female had changed so much since she’d first met Vorilye; she was no longer proud, she had lost her brash attitude when she’d been driven out, and the months of isolation and rejection had burned her soul, causing her to turn into a weak, submissive femme, who’s entire life seemed to dangle on the end of a string. Her sudden loss of children had been the last straw, and now she was dejected, merely trying to find some sort of familiarity within her shattered life.
Sighing to herself, Kallik nodded to Shayde, keeping her head low and her eyes averted. Although, she couldn’t help but growl, ”You should know that, while I lived here, I was taught nothing. I grew up literally alone…my story would scare even you, Shayde. And these past ten or so months? Please – Akihra didn’t teach me anything, either. That’s why my children are dead.” Kallik couldn’t keep the harsh tones out of her voice – if anything, only that had remained as a link to her old self. But she managed to keep silent after that, although the red beta’s last comment stung her deeply. Exhaling as if she were pulling the wasps’ stinger out, Kallik said quietly, ”No, Shayde. It is plenty good for me. Thank you for allowing me a home…even if it might be temporary.”
Kallik glanced towards Angel, glad at least that she was being friendly – although, Kallik didn’t know of her mental stability – she’d only ever met her once more twice, and Angel had always seemed happy. She had so far kept silent about Angel’s comments, as the imminent threat of being clawed in the eyes by the sassy beta had seemed much more import, but Kallik was hoping that her submissive words had helped at least a little. She gave Angel a weak smile before saying softly, ”I suppose then, yes, Angel, the alpha and I were mates. But we aren’t now – we were only mates for a very short time.”
Kallik didn’t know what she was saying – mates, with Vorilye? Please! He’d rejected her when she had told him of her feelings, banished her in fear that he had been duped; Kallik had never had a mate, and she doubted that she ever would. Still, some part of her was just telling her to agree, as that would cause much less problems. At the mention of waiting for Vorilye, Kallik grimaced before she looked towards Shayde. Ears pressed flat against her skull, Kallik cleared her throat and asked, in what she hoped was a polite voice, ”Shayde…he already knows I’m here. Do we really need to wait for him?” Once again, the femme cast a glance towards Amyntas, although she had a feeling that yes, they did need to wait for Vorilye. She didn’t have any fear for herself, but she did fear for Amyntas; Vorilye had never let in a brute that Kallik remembered.

This red femme was really beginning to piss Amyntas off. She may have had good cause to be acting as she was, but every word slipping from her maw was clearly affecting Kallik in a negative way. All of his fur stood on end as his anger rose. Without really thinking it through, the brute stepped forward, towering over the red femme. “Don’t place all the blame on her in this,” he growled. “Have you always announced your arrival in a new land when you were entering?” Seeing the femme tense ever so slightly brought a smirk to the brute’s maw. “That’s what I thought.” The anger receded slightly, though his fur remained bristled.
The other femme that belonged to the Descai pack actually greeted him kindly. Astonishment filled his expression before he too lightened up. He wagged his tail at her. “It’s Angel, yes? Nice to meet you as well.” His golden eyes darted to the red femme, almost hoping she would introduce herself as well. She didn’t. The anger seemed to fade from her as well, though, as she strode towards them. He tensed slightly, expecting a fight, but she made no motion to lunge at him or Kallik. She spoke up, giving them both permission to remain in the territory. Under different circumstances, he probably would have wagged his tail, but given that Shayde was being a bitch, he simply narrowed his eyes at her.
Amyn brushed against Kallik, giving her a comforting lick to the ear. Even if she wasn’t completely accepted by the Descai beta, he would be there for her. At least until the alpha returned. After that, his existence in her life was still up in the air. It all rested on the decision of the alpha. The brute closed his eyes, heaving a deep sigh. All of the anger swollen in his body seeped out with his breath, the cool air offering some assistance. He listened to Kallik and Angel speak, keeping his eyes clamped shut. When Kallik cleared her throat, his eyes snapped open, thinking she was trying to get his attention. But it turned out she was addressing Shayde. He tried not to respond to Kallik’s glance, knowing full well what it meant, and instead sighed deeply again, eyes locking onto the Descai beta for the answer.

Pride and annoyance spread through the Descai beta like a wildfire. The pretty femme was cowering before her with every word. She was hoping for some yelling, a challenge of authority or something! This was kind of...boring. The brute, however, didn’t remain silent any longer. He stood up for the pretty femme, his bristled fur causing his size to nearly double. A small tinge of fear filled Shayde, but she showed none of it on her face, standing her ground. But when he asked her that question, the one about calling to the alpha, she tensed. When she had first arrived, she hadn’t bothered called to the alpha. It was beneath her to do such a thing. This brute seemed to be satisfied with her reaction, smirking deviously. She instinctively growled at him, but it didn’t seem to faze him in the slightest.
The pretty femme then spoke to her, whining about all sorts of stuff Shayde didn’t particularly care for. So what if she hadn’t been taught anything during her stay in Acerbus? Or in Kamari (which vaguely surprised Shayde, but again, she didn’t show it). No. The femme should have already known all this etiquette from her birth-pack. And Shayde didn’t particularly care for that story. In fact, she was kind of hopeful the alpha would show up so she didn’t have to deal with any of this anymore. Then, the femme answered her rather bitchy question in a polite manner. It caused the red femme to grow annoyed again. Why couldn’t she grow angry, like the brute beside her had? Why couldn’t she snarl and give the beta a reason to attack?
The answers evaded Shayde. Maybe she was following the only protocol she had learned in her lifetime. Submit to your superiors and do as you’re told. But it still annoyed Shayde. She wanted some sort of conflict to arise, a reason to let out all of this frustration she was feeling. She didn’t want to feel like this when the alpha returned. If she did, she would likely act inappropriately in his presence. She had to get her act together. Just as she was about to go off on her own to vent, the pretty femme spoke up again. It was a rather stupid question, Shayde felt, but she answered it nonetheless. “Of course you do,” she replied curtly. “I don’t care if you wish to rest up, but do not go in the dens.” Her red-brown gaze darted to the mine entrance, wondering briefly about the unconscious femme that lay within. She then turned to Angel. “Make sure they don’t go in there. Alpha would be pissed if they get any closer than they already are.”
Shayde took a few steps away from the group, casting her gaze back only once. Every ounce of her instinct was telling her to stay and watch them carefully with her own eyes, but her temper had already swollen past the point of return. The last thing she wanted was to start a fight with the pretty femme and have to take on that brute on her own. She couldn’t guarantee that Angel would back her up, especially if she was the one who started the fight. For now, she would just walk it off. Turning back towards her destination, Shayde bounded off, disappearing into the night.

The white wolf watched their conversation with her pale sapphire blue eyes. She was trying to let them sort things out by themselves, as she didn’t think her peacekeeping efforts would be much help in calming the situation down. Shayde hadn’t relaxed her aggressive posture yet, but Angel supposed she should be thankful that at least a fight hadn’t started. Kallik seemed almost submissive – which was unusual for Angel to see – and although it was clear that the white brute wanted to protect her, he hadn’t risen to take the bait.
Angel nodded as Shayde told her not to let the two wolves inside the dens. “Don’t worry. I’ll keep the dens safe.” As much as she liked Kallik and Amyntas, there was a fragile femme in there who needed peace and quiet. Angel hoped that Noella would recover soon so that she too could join their pack. Descai was growing quickly and the more the merrier! Acerbus really wasn’t so bad if you didn’t pay attention to the evil aura that surrounded the place, and the wolves here had good hearts, even if they kept them hidden deep down inside. Angel believed that every wolf had goodness inside them, and there was no such thing as a totally evil wolf. Some just needed encouragement to bring their better sides out, that was all.
Then the next moment Shayde had gone, and she was left alone to guard Kallik and Amyntas. The pretty white she wolf yawned and sank down onto the ground. She wasn’t afraid of these two attacking her, just because she believed there was no reason for them to do so. It wasn’t as nice down here as it had been up on the ledge, as the ground was getting her pure white coat a bit dirty, but she had been given orders to stay here and watch the two lone wolves, and wanted to be seen doing her job when Vorilye arrived. Hopefully the alpha wouldn’t take too long.
