He wasn't sure why he was always drawn back to the shoreline where he'd washed up that very first day. Was he having trouble letting go? Did he still miss those he had left across the sea? Truly he did miss his family, and wondered of them often. How did his sister fair? The life he had left her with could not be pelasant; purposeless. Huxleyi assumed his brother was well, if his escape attempt had been successful. A sigh rattled up his throat, steaming into the chilled air infront of him. The grey Beta turned his head side to side slowly, the muscles stiff from the cold.
The wind off of the sea had lost its edge of warm - even the vast expanses of water couldn't bring an eleviating breath to the ice-locked land. Huxleyi already missed the warmer months, though he knew things could be an aweful lot worse. At least their numbers had risen, and they were able to hunt as a pack for larger game - that made winter so much more tolerable. He was glad for Cherie's leadership and percerverance in the hunting, without her they would likely have gone hungry in the early days of winter. A little smile crossed his lips at the thought of the small female. She truly wore her emotions bare, and it was clear to Huxleyi that he had become a source of her happiness. The way her face lit up that day they had spoken about organizing the hunt with Toiro... his chest swelled as he tried to swallow down butterflies.
What was this feeling? Still heavily in denial that having affectionate feelings for another wolf was appropriate for him, he wondering if this was how friendship felt. No... he didn't feel like this when Toiro or Aludra smiled at him. Eye lids slid closed over golden orbs, wrenching shut to try and sort his now racing thoughts. Another sigh and Huxleyi let his eyes re-open, though he was instantly distracted by a rather odd sight: A bird was heading straight for a crash landing into the icy wake of the sea! The all-white gull seemed terrified, it's neck had an odd structure around it and it seemed unable to maintain flight. His belly full and emotions on the fritz the large wolf acted without thinking. Jumping forwards he plunged into the waves as the bird crashed into the surface, the icing spray sharp against his body. A blood curdling shriek erupted form the downed avian as it surfaced, thrashing helplessly. Fighting against his body's instinct to get out of such icy water. Scooping the bird up in his jaws the exhausted creature seemed to give up, falling limp in Huxleyi's mouth. Bringing the little bird back onto the beach, he set it gently down in the snow. confused at what was around his neck. It was made of a strange material and formed six circles... was it a man thing? He scowled at the thought - man always had cruel ways to hurt animals.
The bird was non responsive, though he could see it was breathing sharply, unevenly. The thing around it's neck must have been cutting off the passage of air to its lungs. Dipping his head down he began to chew at the loop around the birds neck, hooking a canine in between the feathery animal and the plastic hoop. It took little effort to cut the object away, the bird gasping suddenly and flapping haphazardly on the spot. However it froze suddenly, noticing that it was still facing a very large canine. "Oh go on then. Just eat me!" The bird croaked at him, completely defeated. The disheveled female glared at Huxleyi, her short yellow beak stark against her white head, a frown tugging at it's corners.
"I saved you, why would I eat you? It would have been much easier to kill you with that loop thing still on your neck." The bird looked down to see that plastic sitting mangled in the snow to her right. She looked swiftly from the man device to Huxleyi, back and then back again. Her facial features softened, "Oh. Well... why?" Her question was most certainly justified and Huxleyi couldn't really think of an answer, he had just done it.
"I don't really know... I just saw you falling, and drowning would be a terrible way to go. I nearly did myself once." He offered a kind smile, and reclined in the snow, shivers now taking hold of his body.
The white bird was obviously confused, but she too was cold and had begun to shake. Huxleyi frowned and moved forwards, startling the bird into releasing a squawk. She gave an uneasy glare at the wolf, but allowed him to move forwards. Huxleyi, keeping his gaze trained on the bird, knowing that its bill was likely sharp. He lay down then, curling his fluffy body around the little bird. "My name is Huxleyi." He stated, noting the very suspicious look on the birds face. "What kind of bird are you?"
"Well Huxleyi, it is a pleasure to meet you and this... is weird." The bird gave a kawing laugh, but snuggled into the warm fur along the wolf's flank. "My name is Isna, I'm called a Red-legged Kittiwake."
The two sat together then in silence, the odd scene one that would likely seem foreign to any who came across them. Truly Huxleyi could easily kill the bird in one fell swoop, but he felt good about the choice he had made. He had shown compassion and mercy, and there was no harm in helping an animal like this. Besides, he didn't even find the animal appetizing to look at. Isna was malnourished, and feathers were quite the hassle to work through for such a small meal. No, this was the right choice. Perhaps he had made a new friend - and odd one, but a friend none the less.

Notes: It'd be best if Cherie would come along, or Aludra because Hux could suffer hypothermia, as could Isna.
