It was a clear day, but very windy. The cold had begun to press in on all sides, and any forest floor would be covered in leaves. Ice would be beginning to cover the lakes and hot springs. The wind was strong and fierce today. It howled mightily, pushing through the countryside. Today was the day when any smart wolf would be locked away in a cave, or huddled in the forest, or, if they had no where else to go, they might be huddled at the base of one of the larger hills in Nyjoro Hills to get shelter from the wind and the cold.
One wolf wandered. She was snowy white in color, with a touch of black. It appeared as if she was an angel, touched by the tips of a demon. For her ears and tail were completely black, and they were of the darkest black. Perhaps instead, it was because of her heart. Perhaps, if she had been raised differently, no evil would have touched her heart, and no black would have touched her coat.
But even so, she was greatly sought after. She could turn every male head in a group, besides that of her brother, simply by just walking by. And she had the brains and the means to facade her way through, and weasel into their hearts, if she wished. Maybe if she had felt emotion, she would be amused by this. But that was the thing: Zaida, for that is her name, had not felt a single emotion, by any degree, since she had turned one year old. The constant coldness of her mother, brother and sister had finally taken it all away. Without emotions, she rarely thought. It was more of a conclusion drawn from observation. A conscious thought hardly passed her mind these days. Unless it was an insult, usually directed at her brother, Atoyo.
Today, she was simply hungry. She had not eaten in above a week. Her mother had commanded her time and again, when she killed a wolf off the hit list, not to eat it, but, rather, to leave it to be found whole. And so, she had decided to hunt. She was used to going hungry, as half of her life she had spent doing so. But even she could not survive forever on an empty stomach. If she didn't eat, she would have to drop the speed in which she made the assassinations, in order to preserve the quality and total silence of her actions. And Zaida would never allow that to have to happen. If she were able to feel emotion, Atoyo would infuriate her. She probably would have been driven insane by this point already by him. Luckily, she hadn't.
The tall grass of the Chamoru Plains waved to and fro in the wind. White paws crossed the ground silently. Snowy maw stayed partly opened to catch any scent. Black audits were perked, swiveling every now and then at the sound of prey. Zaida wasn't quite sure what she was going to kill today, but it really didn't matter, as anything would not taste half as good as wolf meat.
She had just decided on a small creature she heard rustling the grass upwind from her when her ears caught a faint sound. She stopped moving, focusing intently on the sound. It was a deep bass, followed by a slow rustling of the grass. It had only been carried to her ears by the wind. Even Zaida's great hearing couldn't hear that far away. Quickly, and silently, Zaida loped to the sound until she was close enough the smell it. Yes. Caribou.
The first had emerged for the winter. She hadn't the faintest idea how the animal had even made it to the island, or why, but she never really bothered to understand. Especially since she hardly ever hunted normal prey. Her prey had always consisted of wolf meat, and regular prey secondly, as a last resort. Well, it had been a long time since she had eaten, and an even longer time since she had hunted, and she was going to enjoy herself on this one. At least, as much as a cold-hearted, emotionless wolf could enjoy herself.
And the caribou was a calf. That was probably the reason it had been calling loudly. Trying to locate its mother, no doubt. Well, that was perfect. Calf, no mother. Poor little calf. It would resent itself for ever letting its deep, bass voice resound by the time she was done with it. If it hadn't, she probably would have never known it was there.
No actual pity coursed through the femme. The only thing running through her was the steady spin of her mind. Not actual thoughts. Her mind was simply working. Figuring out the best way to cripple the creature so that he couldn't run. In the end, breaking two of its legs was the quickest, easiest course. The snowy femme slowly approached the calf. Right as he began to call once more, she lept forward. Her teeth closed over his left hind leg, and she jerked her head at the same moment. The resounding crack as well as the calf's change of tone told her that she had, indeed, broken the leg. But instead of falling, the calf jerked into action, running away at a slow gallop. He often cried out, but did not slow. Zaida followed quickly, herding him south. Soon, they reached the sandy shores of Endyt Beach. About mid-way through the soft, warm, white sand, Zaida picked up the pace, and lashed out once more at the calf. This time, she broke its right foreleg.
This time, the calf fell, unable to run. He let out a long note, filled with pain. Zaida went to work. She bit him all over his coat, never deep enough to be fatal, but always deep enough to elicit a cry of pain. Her expression remained blank. No emotion coursed through her, no insanity glittered in her eyes, no smile covered her maw. Zaida actually didn't know why she sometimes did this, but she had never really dwelled on it either. Not even her subconscious mind had tried to figure it out. Maybe she had blocked it off. But somehow, it made her mind more quick, made her a better assassin. And it allowed her to practice her signature, since she almost never got to put it on an actual kill.
She was completely focused, and completely silent. The wind covered up every sound, and almost covered the calf's cries. Only someone who was approaching the beach would be able to hear them. Because of this, her subconscious mind was alert. It was always alert, but now it was constantly focused. As her main focus was on her task, her subconscious focus was on an approach, whether intelligent--a wolf--or otherwise.
After the bites, she had moved back to its legs. She had broken each leg slowly, in every single place that it could be broken. Afterwards, she had slowly broken each of its ribs, one by one. After this, the calf was silent. It was probably only half-conscious. It was in so much pain that it couldn't utter a single sound. The femme ripped at its skin, and clawed its head where the antlers would have come out the next year. She ripped out one of its eyes, and then killed it. Just as she made the kill, her ears picked up a far away sound of approaching paws. If she had felt any emotion, she would have been annoyed. But, as it is, she only readied herself, and began to work the mask.
Just as the approaching wolf would come into earshot, she snarled viscously, and then jumped silently a few feet away and yelped. She jumped back, growling warningly, and then imitated a wolf running away with her own paws. She started by making the noise loud, and slowly silenced her movements, making it sound as though the sound were simply going out of earshot. Then, she turned slowly, and with slow steps, she approaching her kill. She applied a sorrowful look which pitied the dead calf as she slowly approached. Just as the approaching wolf would be able to see her, she arrived at the calf's back and winced quietly as her sorrowful eyes raved the beast's mangled body. His legs jutted out as so many odd angles, and his pelt was covered in so many bites, scratches, and blood from the broken ribs that it looked like he had been out through a grinder or something. After she had looked him over, she lowered her head gently, muttering Rest with Allah.
And then her ears suddenly perked up, and she swung her head around quickly, feigning surprise. A wolf was standing a few feet away, watching her.
