It was a beautiful day, despite the steady approach of winter. The sun shone mightily, and the previous frosty temperatures had risen to about fifty degrees by noon. The sounds of the jungle were noisy at this time of day. Different animals could be heard calling back and forth, and a general hum of noise could be heard. There was a beautiful sound of a bubbling stream that echoed around the trees. There was an overall peace to the place, despite the fact that it was bubbling with activity.
A brown and cream wolf padded slowly through the jungle. She was intrigued--no--absolutely enchanted by the jungle and all of the life that filled it. She had never seen a jungle, much less been in one, and this was an experience that she wouldn't soon forget. Beautiful grey eyes sparkled, looking everywhere around her. She smiled widely. She had only been on the island of Anikira one full day. Her mission on the island was not to stay, but that did not stop her from enjoying every ounce of the island. It was a beautiful place. She was almost sad that she would have to leave it before long.
Sydas, for that is her name, had come to the island with her brother, Kenai. They were not here to stay, though: they were simply looking for someone. Their uncle, Kismet--whom they had always affectionately called big brother--had disappeared over a year ago. It had been two years since they had seen him last. He had never returned home. The two wolves had determined to find him, and had already spent seven month searching for him. Now, Sydas was sure that Kismet was on the island of Anikira, although she didn't know how she was so confident about this.
She and her brother had separated only because it was an island. They could cover more ground separately, and thereby finding their uncle, or not finding him, in a shorter amount of time. Sydas had chosen to start on the accompanying island, and Kenai was starting on the west coast of Anikira. They would meet in the middle, and travel north together.
Sydas's form moved at a slow pace, and every few minutes, she could be heard coughing. Suddenly, her ears pricked eagerly and she turned her head. There! A beautiful robin was perched on a branch, about ten feet away. Sydas smiled widely, and trotted over slowly.
Hello there! she called as she approached.
The robin jumped at the sound, and ruffled its feathers in flight. But then it stopped and stared at the wolfess. What do you want? it demanded impatiently. Sydas chuckled lightly, smiling widely at the bird.
Don't be that way, Mr. Robin. I just wanted to chat.
Sydas's grey eyes sparkled with friendliness. The bird ruffled its feathers again, shifting its weight back and forth. It twittered anxiously.
Oh. Well, I see.
May I ask you what the names of these beautiful islands are?
Tas'alea is the one you're standing on, and Anikira is the connecting one....who's your friend?
Sydas jumped slightly. She hadn't heard the approach of pawsteps, being so caught up in the beautiful little bird and her conversation with it. She turned slowly--so as to not frighten the bird--and what she saw made her freeze in her tracks, and sent her heart speeding in terror.
"Talking." Others
