Kyra's reaction surprised the cream patched male, he thought that she would be happy he wanted nothing from her. But she seemed confused, which made him second guess his response. Was that not the right thing to say? Maybe things were different on this island. Upon closer inspection, she didn't seem to be offended by what he said - apparently just caught off guard. He decided not to think anything more on the matter unless she brought it up.
Her acceptance of his offer to find food was actually a relief, it would provide her more time to herself without his fumbling presence and he would feel useful.
However, his possession of a brighter demeanor once again dimmed when she revealed she had no one to alert of her condition. He felt sympathy towards the smaller female as she made an obvious effort to put off any attention to that detail of her life. "I'm sorry." Was all he could utter, no clever words of wisdom or insightful proposals - he had nothing and it actually hurt him to be so useless to help her out. After standing for what seemed like eternity, but was only a few seconds, watching her attend her injury, Kenai once more broke the silence: "I'll return shortly with something to ease your hunger."
He stood put for a moment after he spoke then turned and silently melted into the tall grasses. Once, he was out of sight, Kenai let his instincts take over any thought of the little fiery female behind him. Something had to be close. The grass was a perfect hiding place for rabbits, pheasants or whatever other type of bird and small animal was around here. He stopped and closed his dark eyes, listening to the earth and its music played by the creatures that lived within it. Then he caught a note that was out of place in Mother Nature's chorus. There...Fire colored eyes snapped open to follow the sound that his sensitive ears caught. A indistinct shape took form behind trusses of thick grasses, but just because his eyes couldn't identify the animal didn't mean he lost to its species.
A tell-tale scent reached out to him, like a beacon screaming out to him. Hare. That should suffice. Now with a target in mind, Kenai crouched lower and stepped toward his prey in silence. The wind in his favor, Kenai had everything going for him to make the hunt a successful one.
Springing into action, Kenai launched into the air towards the tiny creature. Panicked beyond all reason, the young hare make known its inexperience as it bolted the exact opposite direction it should have. Mouth open and ready, Kenai caught the hare by one of its back legs which resulted in it trying to kick away its predator with its other legs in a desperate manner. The pathetic thing even folded itself towards the wolf and tried to attack him with its teeth.
Kenai's response was to place it between his front paws, holding it down so he could get a decent grip on the back of its neck. With a quick shake, its spine shattered and the kicking and frenzied counter-attack ceased. "Syncho?réste me." He said to the carcass in his grasp once he set it on the ground. A plea of forgiveness he often recited after a hunt, he didn't enjoy taking the life of another but he knew it was how nature intended life to go on.
Picking up his quarry, Kenai started to make his way back to Kyra. Hopefully, she was alright - he hadn't been gone that long.
