The forest was quiet, the only sounds was the soft padding of two sets of legs. Well, if you were someone else, it would only be one. Katari's mind conjured up the other, attaching it to the body and voice of someone that did not exist outside her head. "Ren" She whispered, careful not to break the quiet that slept in these trees, "Why is it so... unpleasant here?" The thick canopy ate up most of the sunshine, breaking only in little spots to let light through. It made everything seem colder, the pressing shade making her uneasy. This would be a good place for other wolves perhaps. Ones who didn't mind the darkness. That was not her. She longed to bathe in the rays of sunshine, to lay there until she was so warm that her limbs turned sluggish. The earth was squishy, carpets of moss holding liquid to muffle the sounds of footsteps. "The trees hold out a lot of direct sunlight, making it dark and humid. Especially after rain." he replied matter-of-factly, a patient grin spreading playfully across his face. "It's the same as every other time you've asked." Ren didn't have to whisper. Katari never understood why, but the forest was never bothered with him. Animals didn't scatter in his presence like they did hers, or become silent as he passed by. He was so natural, so in tune with the world around him, and she envied him for it. She didn't say anything more to his reply, just nodded and continued her trek. She was happy he had returned. He often would disappear, sometimes for weeks, and she didn't like to be alone. He had appeared only a couple of days ago, but she knew he could leave at any time. It made the minutes she spent with him even more precious.
She looked up at the sky, trying to navigate herself. A task that was easier said than done. The only indication of direction were the mountains in the distance, peeking through gaps in the foliage, and the sun. She tried to keep the mountains on her right, moving south in the hopes or warmer lands. She had no idea how much farther this forest went on. Ever since travelling through that god awful mountain passage, she had stubbornly pushed on. Everything looked the same in the forest: Dark, damp, and cold. Even the animals she hunted were different, although she couldn't put her finger on how. Everything was so well adapted to this kind of living. Everything but her.
"Stop" Ren's voice was surprising. She spun to face him, wide eyes looking up into his, a silent plea to explain his outburst. She tilted her head, trying to listen for anything. The seconds ticked by in silence, and she frowned. "Ren." She sighed, "calm down. You've been way too tense lately. What are you worried about?" She grinned softly. Growing up with him meant she could read him easily. This place made her uneasy, and so the same emotions were transferred to him as well. It must have looked silly from the outside, an out of place wolf talking to herself, but Katari was blind to it all. Another second slipped by, and she turned away from him and continued on. She forced her mind to think about other things, trying to calm the nerves that Ren had twisted up with his worry. She didn't want to imagine what sort of creatures there could be hiding behind any one of these trees.
