History: Kuruk was the last born of 4 children to a mother and father belonging to a small pack. They were basically unknown to the mainland as they kept to themselves for the most part on the island of Tas'alea. Kuruk's father and mother had come to the island in search of somewhere untouched by the rest of the wolf population. Somewhere they could live in peace. Kuruk's father was a strong and powerful wolf. He commanded respect with every breath that he took. Kuruk's father was truly a beast that no one in their right mind would ever cross. His mother was a sweet and docile little thing. She took care of her children, fed them, bathed them, but never disciplined them. That was a male's job. A female wasn't strong enough to effectively discipline males so Kuruk's father took that liberty for himself.
Kuruk was most certainly the "bad" child out of the four. He was impulsive, disrespectful to authority figures (especially to his father), rebellious and careless. The thrill of adventure and danger was too much for the young male to handle and often gave in to his cravings for them. He would often participate in high-risk behavior like eating hallucinogenic plants, fighting with his brothers, and when he got a bit older, "womanizing."
However, he wasn't always that way. As a young pup, Kuruk was a free-spirit whose best friend was his adoptive brother Thanatos. After finding him wandering around the island of Tas'alea alone and scared, Kuruk presented Thanatos to his father who accepted him into the family. Kuruk's father treated Thanatos as one of his own and never mentioned the fact that they were not flesh. Kuruk held his position as an older brother to Thanatos in high regard. Kuruk even taught Thanatos how to fight. Kuruk also had a high sense of duty as he often volunteered to patrol the island to keep his family safe. However, Kuruk's father saw him as very irresponsible and reckless as he often did things on a whim, taking no mind to what others thought.
When Kuruk was about 1 and a half years old, his family was attacked by another pack of wolves. They fought bravely but as the battle started to turn for the worse, Kuruk knew that he had to get Thanatos and himself out and to safety. They managed to escape and made it to the main island where they wandered until a female dominated pack "rescued" them. They really only planned to use them for breeding purposes once they got older and it was easier for them to have males in the pack than it was to go out and find suitable ones once the breeding season hit.
This was where Kuruk and Thanatos met Odara. Odara was the most stunningly beautiful she-wolf that Kuruk had ever seen. It didn't take long for him to fall deeply in love with her. He loved her deeply and recklessly, regardless of the consequences. Little did he know, Odara was also seeing Thanatos which sparked the seemingly never ending rivalry between the brothers.
During their time with the pack, the brothers were separated after it was determined that Kuruk was too much of a trouble maker. So one day, a female warrior (who later turned out to be Odara's mother) asked Kuruk to follow her somewhere without giving any explanation as to why or where they were going. Naive, Kuruk followed her. That was the last day Kuruk would see his brother for eight months. Kuruk was tortured for those eight months. For no real reason other than for the enjoyment of the females and to ensure that his spirit was broken. Though they got plenty of enjoyment out of the young male's pain, they never fully broke his spirit. For the first month, he was sure that Thanatos would come and rescue him but it never happened. However, his sweet Odara came and visited him on a regular basis though she kept these visits a secret from Thanatos. The pack had most likely kept that part of the pack's life a secret and Odara didn't want Thanatos to know what was really going on. Kuruk did meet another male named Enzo. Enzo was the one who kept Kuruk's sanity in tact for the most part. He talked to him to distract him from the pain. It wasn't long before they became friends. In the eight months Kuruk spent in that dark cramped cave, he was let outside once. A small group of females would have a little get together if you will with the males they had selected for torture on display. They were weak from the torture and half-starved. It was where the females in charge got to put their "work" on display. Showing how much "progress" the males had made in becoming obedient and respectful members of the pack.
When put back in their "cages" ( just big holes in the ground that were too deep to escape without latter. The pack had managed to make a makeshift one), Enzo and Kuruk began conspiring on how they would escape. Kuruk had been locked up for four months at that point and Enzo had been there longer. Enzo purposed that 1 ration of food was barely enough to keep 1 wolf alive. But if 1 wolf ate 2 rations of food every day, at the end of the next four month period, that wolf would have built up enough strength to fight the next time they were let out. They played a modified version of "rock paper scissors." Kuruk won. It worked. Kuruk got strong just like Enzo said he would. Of course Enzo kept bites here and there to prevent himself from starving to death. But when the next four months ended, Kuruk was ready to escape. When they brought them out into the sunlight and removed Kuruk's restraints (vines that acted as a muzzle), he attacked the female closest to him and killed her as well as five others. Kuruk knew the pack would be bringing backups and they wouldn't take long in getting there. He tried to get Enzo from his restraints but was unable to. Kuruk knew he'd never get another chance to escape again so he chose to save himself. Though he knew the consequences of this action would result in Enzo's death. Kuruk has never forgiven himself for leaving his friend to die. This was when Kuruk's relationship with Odara ended. After killing many of Odara's friends and family members, he fled the pack territory with Thanatos in toe.
The pack didn't kill Enzo, however; and he's still being tortured.
Unbeknownst to the brothers, Odara was actually seeking the brothers out. Claiming to resume her relationship with Thanatos. She happened upon Kuruk first to tell him good-bye. She planned to "kiss" him good-bye but Kuruk told her that he'd rather kill her than kiss her. She responded by saying "Kiss me, Kuruk. Or kill me. We both know you're only capable of one." He turned from her but she stepped in front of him again. He pinned her to the ground, debating whether or not to kill her. He eventually "kisses" her with the intent to mate with her. Which he nearly does, but stops and says he's got a question for Odara. He asks her if she ever loved him to which her response was that she never did and that she only loved Thanatos. This left Kuruk heartbroken and Odara leaves.
Kuruk met another female who was strikingly similar in appearance to Odara only her name was Nova. Nova, had of course met Thanatos several months before Kuruk had met her. In the beginning, Kuruk's only interest in Nova was to torment Thanatos by constantly threatening her and by stating that Nova was a "dead ringer" for their previously shared love interest, Odara. At first, Kuruk disliked Nova and was rather apathetic about her feelings and well-being. Although, he was physically drawn to her as she shared an uncanny resemblance to Odara who had been the object of his affections for so long. He swore to make Thanatos' life full of misery - angry at his brother because he felt that it was Thanatos' fault that Odara didn't love him. He also showed his strength over Thanatos, making a point of highlighting the fact that he was indeed the stronger brother. Though that had nothing to do with Nova directly. Kuruk was merely showing his brother that he could do whatever he wanted and there wouldn't be much he could do about it. Kuruk didn't stop there though. He really made his point clear by attacking, but not killing, a random stranger in the woods.
When Nova visit's the brothers' main sleeping den in search of Thanatos, Kuruk is there instead. He tells her that Thanatos is "on the rebound" of a recently lost love. He then taunts Thanatos about it after Nova leaves. It didn't take long for Nova to develop an opinion about Kuruk. She saw him as sadistic, self-centered, sociopathic and cruel. Of course, she didn't know his story or the reasons behind those things. Kuruk and Nova bickered almost constantly and didn't get along at all.
Kuruk then charms and beds one of Nova's friends who had always felt that she lived in Nova's shadow. Though what Kuruk didn't He also takes Alvina(Nova's friend) to eat with Thanatos and Nova, who had begun a romantic relationship. At this "dinner" Kuruk antagonizes Thanatos for filling Nova's head with lies about Odara. Nova surprises Kuruk by asking (in private) which of the brothers Odara dated first. She renders him speechless by telling him she's sorry because Kuruk had lost Odara.
Kuruk later follows Nova to a clearing and tries to seduce her but instead, she smacks him. Angry, He reacts by killing another wolf. That night, however, Kuruk watched over Nova as she slept and lightly stroked her face even though Kuruk was technically still with Alvina. The next day, Kuruk did apologize to Nova for trying to seduce her, claiming that he was only trying to punish his brother. Nova accepted Kuruk's apology although she still didn't like him.
Nova began to become concerned over Alvina as Kuruk was leaving bite marks all over her body. Aliva at one point asks Kuruk if he's going to kill her. He responds casually by saying that he will, just not yet (though he never actually does because that would hurt Nova).
Nova, seeing that Kuruk was still leaving bite marks on her friend, confronts him about it. Angered, Kuruk takes Alvina to a lake and threatens to drown her. However, Thanatos comes to the rescue of Alvina and manages to get Kuruk locked up in a cave. Alvina did actually come to Kuruk's rescue (for reasons unknown) and freed him from the "cage." In an attempt to lash out at his brother, Kuruk then kills a small group of innocent wolves.
Though the two did break up as Kuruk never had any real feelings for her. Kuruk was un-phased by the break-up but Alvina did try her best to prove that she was over him. Now, the only feelings she has for him are hatred and regret.
When Thanatos was attacked by Keltai, a wolf commanded to track down the brothers by Keiran (the common enemy which Kuruk tried to kill earlier). Kuruk kills Keltai and again, demands to have what was stolen returned to him. Thanatos returned it.
Slowly, Kuruk started to fall in love with Nova as she warmed up to him after getting to know him better. Nova continually forgave Kuruk for the bad things he does, claiming that she sees good in him and that he is worth saving. Nova started reciprocating Kuruk's feelings although she continued to love Thanatos.
Their friendship deepened and Nova actually began caring whether Kuruk lived or died. Even when Nova chooses Thanatos over himself, Kuruk continues to be there for her when she needs someone or feels she can't talk to Thanatos about something. Nova may also be the only wolf that Kuruk has never lied to (though he has omitted parts of the truth and he claimed that he would lie to her if it meant saving her life).
Though Odara isn't completely out of the picture just yet. She did make it back into Kuruk's life, posing as Nova. She comes to find him and, Kuruk believes that it's Nova coming to talk to him. Until, he realizes that it's Odara. Odara invites him to go on a short journey with him, on which Odara beings questioning him about his relationship with Nova. The two come close to breeding, but Kuruk pushes her away and says that she just doesn't do it for him anymore. Nova had stolen the beast's heart. The lion fell in love with the lamb.
Later, Kuruk discovers that Odara has captured Nova's brother to use him to find someone she's looking for. This wolf, was Keiran's father. Odara knew that he was looking to kill his son and if she found him and gave him Keiran's location, that he would do just that. By having Keiran dead, Odara would finally be able to stop running from Keiran. Kuruk rushes back home to rescue Nova's brother. Odara tells him that the Kuruk she used to know would never be so stupid. Kuruk responded by telling her that he wouldn't have done it for her. Kuruk fails in rescuing Nova's brother until after Odara uses him to find Inyso.
After Inyso was found, Kuruk and Odara actually team up with him to bring Keiran down. Kuruk and Odara (posing as Nova) bring Inyso to Keiran's place of residence and the father and son exchange some harsh words. Inyso taunts his "son" telling him that he should come outside and die. Keiran refuses to do so. Disgusted by his son's cowardice, Inyso taunts Keiran further by telling him that he's got Nova (whom Keiran needs alive) and if he didn't come outside that he would kill her. Kieran didn't believe his father and dared him to do it. Inyso then picks up a stick and stabs "Nova". Enraged, Keiran order's his small pack of followers to attack Inyso. But before anymore blood is spilled, Kieran realizes that "Nova" is actually Odara and orders his followers to stop. In those short few seconds of confusion, Kuruk attacks Keiran from behind. Just as he's about to kill Keiran, Thanatos intervenes. Thanatos had discovered that if Kuruk killed Keiran, that he had given orders to his small pack to kill him. Thanatos had put Kuruk's life over the safety of Nova. To this day, Kuruk doesn't understand Thanatos' logic. Whilst the brothers are struggling with each other, Keiran attacks his father and kills him. After Inyso is dead, Odara confesses to actually loving both brothers. This affected Kuruk more than it did Thanatos as Kuruk still felt something for Odara. Ordara survived the stabbing as originally intended.
Not long after that, Kuruk went hunting where he is spotted by Dar'umo. Dar'umo believed that Kuruk had killed his mate. Upon seeing him, he had a flashback of Kuruk standing over his seemingly dead mate. What actually happened was the Kuruk and Dar'umo's mate mated and then Kuruk knocked the female unconscious after she begged him to change her life. She told him that she wanted a new start and that she wasn't happy with the way her life was going. He decided that he would simply knock her own and drag her body somewhere new where she could start over.
Kuruk and Dar'umo talk for the first time while Kuruk was out hunting. Displeased that his hunt was interrupted, Kuruk wasn't in the mood for giving answers to Dar'umo's invasive questioning.
They did bump into each other one more time and this time Kuruk was more suspicious of the strange male. This conversation went much more smoothly and Kuruk explained what actually happened and that his mate wasn't really dead and that she had come to him, begging him to give her a new life. The two end on neutral terms.
Not too long after this conversaiton, Kuruk and Nova enlist the help of Dar'umo to rescue Thanatos who was being held captive by a small band of wolves. Kuruk convinces Dar'umo to help him by telling him that he would help him find his mate. Both Kuruk and Dar'umo were successful in killing this small group of wolves and setting Thanatos free.
Dar'umo had the habit of carrying around a little trinket that his mate gave him. Kuruk points out that he may know more about Dar'umo's mate than he originally led on and that they should get some answers about her as he knew another wolf with the same trinket. Through some moderate digging, they discover that Dar'umo's mate is actually Nova's mother and that the wolf Nova originally believed to be her uncle was actually her father. Kuruk and Dar'umo end up having a heart-to-heart. After this heart-to-heart, Kuruk and Dar'umo teamed up and helped each other out on numerous occasions and have saved each other's lives more than they'd like to admit. Kuruk now considers Dar'umo a true friend.
Personality: Upon first meeting Kuruk, the only word that would come to mind is sinister. He's ruthless and unsympathetic with little regard for the lives of others. He feels little or no guilt or remorse over killing another wolf. He's very selfish, arrogant, proud, and manipulative. But it all does come wrapped in a pretty package.
However, Kuruk isn't just bad for no reason. When he does bad things, he has reasons for doing them and they usually are pretty good. His methods are unorthodox but he gets things done. He does have a compassionate side and he does have the ability to feel, especially when it concerns Nova. Though he never looses his sadistic nature, he's willing to go to the extreme's to keep Nova safe. He'd put her safety above everyone else, including himself. But he does feel things other than for his love interest. Like his friend Dar'umo whom he'd threatened to kill at least three times but when Dar'umo was seriously injured, Kuruk showed concern and worry. Once, he also got in a fight with one of his brothers so one of his half-sisters wouldn't have to.
Despite these things, Kuruk is not your "kitten wearing a bear's clothing" kind of character. He's shown a blatant disregard for and violation of the rights of others since he was 2 years old. He frequently does things that under human law, are grounds for arrest. He's a lair and will often use some kind of an alias or a fake name when he first meets someone. If it gives him some kind of profit or pleasure, he's not above conning others to get it. He can be impulsive though he has shown impeccable planning skills when he wants to. But he's also killed without thinking because he got angry. He's irritable and aggressive. Especially when he was younger, he would always be getting into fights. His disregard for his own safety as well as the safety of others is shocking. He's not the most responsible wolf one will ever meet. He may disappear for several days without notice or explanation. Sometimes he keeps his word and sometimes he changes his mind. As stated before, he's got a lack of remorse and will often rationalize his reasoning behind doing things that he may know are wrong.
It is important to note that he doesn't exhibit all of those bad things all the time which is why he isn't considered a psychopath. He has taken responsibility for his actions in the past as well as shown remorse for his actions and is capable of doing so again. He can be very honest and reliable (when it suits him and it's about something or someone that he cares a great deal about).
