History: It all began in the mountains of Ethiopia, a small birthing den nestled deep in the security of the climbing slopes. From a pair of Ethiopian Wolves came a litter of three, two females and a male. The largest of the three was named Rita, and as the pups grew, so did their personalities. Now, even at a young age, Rita could tell she was different from her brother and sister. Her siblings were smart and fast, but they held little in the ways of strength and skill when it came to their larger sister. Where Rita was stand-offish and reserved, her sister was outgoing and social, and her brother was just as eager to be heard as his similar sibling. However, though the two seemed to be like peas in a pod, when it came to Rita their opinions varied. Her brother adored her, where it seemed she and her sister were always at odds with each other. But siblings will be siblings, right?
Life was good, the way it should be. But a life of bliss can never last forever. By the time the pups were old enough to leave the den for good and old enough to travel, the threat of humans upon the Ethiopian Wolf species fell upon them. At first they heard stories, threats to their home and dangers to the pups. But then the humans finally made an appearance, forcing the family out of the mountains and causing them to flee extinction towards the eastern coast of Africa. That was when they came across Bale Mountains National Park.
This was a place where they would be safe, where the humans could not harm them. At least that was what they thought. For about a year the family found peace once more, the pups grew to full-fledged adults and the pack flourished. Yes, they heard stories of the humans and disease that was spreading through the country, but those things only happened to others. Not to them. Soon they fell into a lull of bliss once more, a lull that was doomed to be broken once more. The family had heard that Rabies was spreading throughout the country, and although their small home had yet to be touched by the plague of Rabies, disease came in another form. Yes, this virus came eventually, but it hit later. First came CDV, also known as Canine Distemper Virus.
Although almost one hundred percent deadly to domesticated canines, CDV was known to be survivable in wolves. However, only the strongest - and most fortunate - survived. For after the crippling effects of CDV interrupted their sweet and blissful existence, Rabies followed. Rita's mother was the first to succumb to the Rabid behaviors, where her sister soon fell to the Distemper virus. Soon their family was down to three; Rita, her brother, and her father. Tensions rose, as did the dangers of disease, and once again the humans forced their way into the lives of the tiny pack.
They appeared after both Rita and her brother fell ill with CDV. Their father had disappeared for days and they had both given up hope he would return. The two had been lucky enough to avoid the Rabies plague so far, but good fortune did not appear to be on their side. They were both strong, but only Rita was strong enough to survive the disease that had hurled itself ruthlessly upon them. It felt like weeks that she laid helplessly pressed up against a large boulder, shielded slightly from the elements but fading quickly, when it had truly been only a few days. That was when the humans found her.
But these humans were different. They were not hunters, they did not hurt her. No, they were there to help. She was sedated and transferred to a facility where she was treated and slowly recovered from her disease, though not soon enough to permanently eliminate all of the negative side effects. When she was strong enough, she was put on a plane to be transferred to a wildlife sanctuary in Australia. However, only a matter of an hour or so after they took off, the plane hit heavy turbulence and went down somewhere off the east coast of Africa. Somehow, the canine cargo survived, and as she managed to swim the short distance from the wreck to the shore of a nearby island, she found herself in a new, strange place that the locals called Anikira.
Personality: To say that Rita is different from the average wolf would be an understatement. Yes, she is capable of normal socialization and interaction, but it is rare to find her in such a situation. To most she is aloof and reserved, preferring to keep to herself and observe others, rather than interact with them directly. Maybe it is because of her 'disabilities' - as she calls them - or simply because she does not often 'play well with others', but she often makes it a point to avoid others of her kind at all costs.
After she was infected with CDV (Canine Distemper Virus), she was treated and saved by the humans, but not soon enough to avoid the negative - and permanent - side effects. Though she previously relied heavily on her eyesight for hunting and fighting, she no longer was capable of such talent and skill. She can still see fairly well, but in harsh, bright light or heavy darkness, she has difficulty seeing. As she reaches an older age this eyesight problem will eventually cause permanent blindness, but so far she has been lucky enough to avoid such a fate. As if the partial blindness was not enough, she also walks with a slight limp, and because of the neurological effects of the disease, she also has a twitch from time to time. For the most part she is capable of controlling this movement, or at least hiding it, but sometimes it comes out of nowhere and causes her problems.
Though she has had little interaction with other wolves since her treatment, these side effects make her very self conscious and only further her desire to avoid contact with anyone. A once proud and skilled warrior and hunter, she has now deteriorated to a shy and skiddish female, often hiding and doing everything possible to escape the attention of others. A pack would likely deny her acceptance, for her abilities were stunted and her condition worsening with age, but she still had several 'good' years in her. At least that was what she told herself. Nevertheless, to this day she finds it hard to let others close, and even harder to trust anyone enough to call them friend.
