A pair of pale silver eyes blinked in the darkness, still not quite accustomed to the low level of light down in the deeper parts of the underground sytem of Aleru despite having been part of the Ultoris pack for several months now. Vixen had been accepted as a shaman, a great honour which even now caused her heart to flutter in excitement whenever she thought about it. The petite femme had done her best to live up to the alpha’s expectations, slowly building up her supply of herbs in a convenient little den in Shyorm which had plenty of room to store dry herbs as well as a damp area at the back where other medicinal plants could be kept fresh.
This little den was where the shaman of Ultoris was now. She had just returned from a trip to I’queyer, bringing back with her a small bundle of ika pija stems held carefully so as not to shake off the valuable seeds. This herb could be useful to have in stock around this time of year, as it was most often used to provide pups with extra nutrition to help them survive those dangerous first few months. To Vixen’s knowledge, no female in Ultoris was expecting, although she had seen the way their alpha had looked at the femme called Mikiu. A pang of jealousy rose up in the girl’s heart but she quickly stifled it before the emotion could overcome her. That was the problem with being in heat; the lonely she wolf thought of every male with increased interest, especially Severus. He had been so kind to her, granting her a new home when she had lost everything – if only he would think of her as something more…
It was probably only that and the fact that he was the alpha which attracted her; nothing more than a silly little crush, she told herself sternly, and instead concentrated her attention into delicately placing the ika pija into its rightful place next to a decently sized pile of ginger roots (also beneficial for pups’ immune systems). She half wondered whether she had been collecting these herbs out of an inner desire to mate and have pups of her own… but no, that was a ridiculous thought. She wasn’t meant to breed and have a loving family to call her own – that had been apparent to her ever since she was a young pup struggling to keep up with her siblings as they did what normal wolves easily did. Vixen was just too different – nobody could be interested in a diminutive and timid cripple, who looked more fox than wolf.
As the red tundra cross straightened back up, she thought she detected her alpha’s scent. Immediately her heart quickened and her tail lifted involuntarily to allow more of her thick hormonal heat to permeate the air. Stop this! Vixen scolded herself again, promptly tucking her tail between her hind legs. You keep catching the briefest hint of something and thinking it’s him. So stupid. He doesn’t even come visit here. So get a grip on yourself. The little russet female stood glaring at the back wall of the den, not even bothering to check whether he was indeed behind her because the busy alpha most certainly would not bother coming down here to visit her of all wolves.
