Her face was only ever a privilege of glimpses and glances, as the golden femme was elusive as she was beautiful, a sunny face with a sultry smile ever placed upon her dark lips. Her presence was tenuous, rarely visiting the litter since his birth, although whether this was due to her indifference to pups or courtesy towards Valeria, the boy could not discern nor understand.
He overheard her name – Jaienyx – whilst meandering about the territory in one of the rare instances his mother, Valeria, was not monitoring her young clutch. The name was a trick on his tongue; difficult to enunciate, at first, but all the more rewarding when his lips finally conquered the pretty noun, and it rolled through his tongue and teeth with mastered ease.
The pup knew nothing of love or romance beyond the fluttering sensation that beat beneath his ribs when she was in distant view… but he was far too small for her to notice, he was sure. He would have to do something – say something - to earn her attention, as his puppyish magnetism alone clearly could not charm the golden femme, when other females so easily gushed at the innocent sight of him.
He scoured the territory for nearly an entire day, unbeknownst to his mother – a feat that should have been punished, considering the danger he was putting himself in. The jungle was a tangled, hazardous mess of poisonous this and carnivorous that, and held a dark, ceaseless air of unseen predators waiting high and low; but beyond the dangers that undoubtedly lurked beneath every leaf, the jungle was also home to a myriad of beautiful foliage – flowers and fruits of the most striking form, and the pup was determined to find the most beautiful, and bring it to Jaienyx in the hope that she would finally acknowledge him. He refused to settle for mere daisies or colourful weeds – he passed every plant that piqued his interest, searching for faults that would label his gift undesirable in her eyes. Most flowers were missing petals or had been tarnished by insects; some smelled awful whilst others possessed very obvious discolouration. He ignored all of these – his flower had to be perfect.
Eventually, when the sun was beginning it’s slow descent towards the sea, he finally found it – a single, golden flower, unmarred and untouched, hidden amongst bushels of others that had not been so fortunate. Gripping the stem between his milk teeth, he severed it gently and held it soft in his lips, tail wagging in jubilant pride as he bounded his way back to the heart of the pack.
