It was dawn, the morning light just managing to shine in through the cavern and reflect off of the cave walls. As usual he was wide awake, his sides rising and falling gently as he inhaled and exhaled. He had been awake for at least two hours now but he had not moved, had not even opened his eyes yet. Finally he could not resist and slowly his eyelids peeled back to reveal shockingly orange optics. He glanced around him, seeing the bodies of his new siblings, his new family. He was unaccustomed to being small but the other males here were much larger then him. He was anything but tiny, his young body practically bulging with profound muscles. He stuck out like a sore thumb among them, and they hadn't even really interacted with one another yet. So far he had been unsure of what to do, had felt out of place. But his new mother had encouraged him, had pushed him to introduce himself otherwise he wouldn't survive here. She was his savior and he was going to do whatever he could to make her proud, even if it meant going out of his comfort zone. But for now he would lie low. He glanced around him, his gaze landing on each of the other pups. One male in particular was lying farther off then the others, he knew that one was Erebos. Erebos intrigued him, mostly because he seemed much like himself. They were similar in many different ways, but he had not mentioned this. Had done his best to stay out of the way of the others. Slowly he rose off of his belly then, his paws guiding him away from the cluster of pups. It was like a maze in the caverns and it was like bombs were placed everywhere. There were multiple mothers and pups nestled in the cave, and if he should step on the wrong one he would alert the rest of them.
He tiptoed out and around the nearest female, one who was black as night just like him aside from the silver patches in his fur. He was curious about her and knew that she had babysat his siblings, but he had yet to speak to her himself. He knew he would eventually but today was not the day. He hopped over one of her sleeping pups and made his way toward the entrance of the caverns. He took one last glimpse behind him before exiting. Instantly the rays of the sun warmed his hide and he pulled his haunches beneath him. He sat in the sunlight, allowing the light to shine off of his deep ebony pelt. His ears laced backward and he let out a slow sigh. This was almost like a dream that he hadn't woken up from just yet. Part of him was anticipating this new chapter in his life, but the other half of him still thought of his sisters. His real siblings. He missed them from time to time, but he knew that they were better off without him. His old mother had hated him, had made him hate himself. He still loathed himself. And because of it the only thing he felt was anger and self loathing. Occasionally pain but he never associated with it. He was detached and aloof most of the time, but highly intelligent. He didn't understand what was wrong with him, but his new mother hadn't indicated that there was something wrong with him. She had taken him in, had welcomed him, had given him a name. He was no longer "The Boy" or "Boy." He was Onyx. The name rolled around in his head and slowly a smile flickered across his face. His mother had seemed content when she had given him the name which made him happy. It was the only feeling of happiness he had experienced thus far.. And he held onto it. But as quickly as the smile was there it was gone. His orbs glanced off across the terrain, curiosity buzzing in his mind but for now he stayed put. It seemed like he would always remain an outcast.
