It seemed like Nimue had been waiting for this day for all of her life.
Nevermind that it was a fairly short life; the pup had no time to consider these things as she trailed after the mobile form of her mother, struggling between obedience and unrestrained excitement. It took as much of her limited self-control as possible to remain orderly and quiet. She and her siblings had been cooped up in the crowded dens forever, and now that their mother was giving them a rare opportunity to see the outside world, she was careful not to ruin it. She couldn’t speak for her siblings, each of whom were more spirited than she herself was, but she quietly hoped that they would behave. Her paws, which were quite large for her age, thudded dully against the rock floors of the damp caverns as she trailed after her mother’s dark, swaying tail. She was clumsy despite her attempts to be elegant, her increased size leading to gangly limbs and bumbling movements. Each time she tripped over her paws she cast a sheepish glance towards Messoria, glad that her mother hadn’t seen. All of this was forgotten, however, as the first bright rays of sunlight illuminated the opening of the den.
With a happy gasp, Nimue darted forward, only to stop abruptly by her mother’s forelegs as her voice rang out sharply. ”Slowly,” her mother said, her amber eyes falling on Nimue and then each pup in turn. ”You will wander no further than just outside of the dens, or you will all be taken back inside. Understood?” Practically bouncing up and down on her paws, Nimue nodded her head quickly, her icy blue eyes widening in excitement. ”Yes, Mama,” she trilled compliantly, and as Messoria nodded her head in permission and lowered her dark frame to a laying position just at the mouth of the cave, Nimue darted past her in excitement. The moment her paws touched the soft grass she grinned, enjoying the feel of the sun along the dark fur of her back. It was so different than the dens out here, so open! There was no jostling for space or listening to the squabbling of other pups, no fighting Hyperion for every inch of room. She cast a glance back at him smugly, although it was good-naturedly, the grin still pulling at the corners of her mouth. Just behind her siblings she could see her mother, one eye closed and the other half-lidded, watching her young carefully.
A moment later Nimue’s attention was robbed by the colorful wings of a vivid yellow butterfly as it drifted by. ”Morri, look,” she called, excited as always to share things with her darkest sister. Her tail swayed back and forth swiftly as she tracked the butterfly’s progress with her gaze, her mind awhirl with the sounds of birds calling and squirrels chattering. Outside was so different from inside; the last thing she wanted to do was go back to the darkness of the den, but it would only be a matter of time before she could finally explore on her own. For now, she was happy to bound clumsily after the butterfly as it darted in circles.
