Aveline was paradise – the rolling hills, grass waving in the soft autumnal breeze, with tall trees dotting the horizon. The seasons were still new to Morrigan, still in her first year, and the dread of winter no longer haunted her. Here, the sun was still shining, illuminating the golden leaves still clinging to their branches. Ina’mos, the island where she was born and raised, had become so tedious, though she had not realized her thirst for open spaces until Aveline had been claimed for her new family. Bordered on all sides by water, her days were rather limited there on Ina’mos, but here was an entirely different story. Here, she could run for miles, and she would still be within the boundaries of her territory – hers, though it still didn’t feel like reality. It was a dream come true that she had never dared to dream. A family of her own creation, though still in its infancy, had all the promise that her old life lacked. In Aveline, she felt alive. This, Morrigan knew, was as close to heaven as she would ever reach.
She thought of her father – she still respected him, even if their viewpoints were so vastly opposing. He had birthed an empire, along with an obscene number of offspring. Morrigan was grateful that he had claimed numerous females as his own, naturally. She was born to Goliath’s second mate. If not for his insatiable appetite, she wouldn’t exist. But she had accepted that certainly, she was replaceable in her father’s rank. How many new little brothers and sisters would she have in six months’ time? And yet, in spite of it all, despite the neglect and the ever-expanding family tree, she felt that she missed it already – or, rather, she missed certain parts of being in a pack. There was still much to learn about life on the outside.
Passing moments of fear still clouded her mind when the worries began to nag. Even still, her confidence was blooming with each day that passed. She was an alpha, but she had no experience, and her size did not betray her youthfulness. Now, her decisions carried unfathomable consequences – others were relying on her and Nimue, and Morrigan did not intend to disappoint them. It was her duty to keep them safe, if nothing else. There always seemed to be something to do. Whether greeting new wolves or getting to know the ones who had already joined Ananke, Morrigan had been existing in a state of controlled chaos. Today, however, she was determined to slow down. If the wolves that trusted her were to be her new kin, she had to spend time with them.
There were two she-wolves in particular that Morrigan sought, as the afternoon sun crept through the sky. The females were both small, the ideal archetype for a Kairos breeder, though they were still too young for motherhood. They had arrived on the day of Ananke’s birth, searching for a life beyond their natal pack that lived in the jungles of Anikira. The pack they came from was withering away, due in part to its rigid gender expectations and its lackluster leadership. The pack was the polar opposite of Kairos, but Morrigan knew nothing else about Valyn. She was interested to know more.
Morrigan’s heavy paws thudded against the dry, cracked ground as she walked through the plains. Her pale azure eyes scanned the horizon for any sign of lupine life nearby, for any hint of movement as her ebony nostrils tested the air.
