The day was bright, stunningly so after the savage storm that had skirted the coastline the evening before. Overhead lingering clouds billowed in thick balls of white moving lazily across a sky so blue that it could dazzle ones senses if they paused long enough to look. The waves broke gently upon the soft sand, raising up only to retreat just as swiftly in a never ending dance of land and sea. The wind danced playfully across the beach, wild and unhindered. In the distance one might see a figure stretched out and unmoving, the fire of that coat shifted in the breeze, the only movement this creature made. A keen eye might catch the shallow breath, the slightest lifting of her side before collapsing, as if it was almost too much effort to bear.
Hours would pass, the sun which had been raising just over the horizon now sat high overhead, the waters’ edge had slowly crept closer and closer to the unmoving figure, until finally the waves lapped up against her, splashing gently at her face. A taste of salty water caused irritable grumble to escape, the smooth sweet voice thicken with a pout. “Díoltas…go away already, I’m trying to sleep…” Again the water splashed against her face causing her to jerk upwards shaking that skull viciously with an irritated growl “Díoltas I said sto…..!” Those words trailed off as the soft gray eyes finally opened to the sight before her. This was not home, and Díoltas was gone. With a cry of anguish the memories came flooding back. Her desperate struggle to remain at her sisters’ side even as the abandoned ship they had curled up in for shelter from the storm had been carried to the ocean by a flash flood. The terrified feeling that had swept through her as that unsound hull began to crumble, loosing its battle against the crippling waves that pounded it relentlessly until it to finally fell to defeat. The helplessness she had felt as she watched her sister get dragged further and further away by the waves no matter how hard she fought to keep up. But even when her lungs burned with a ruthless flame, when muscles cried out at every motion telling her she had far exceeded her limits, still she forced herself to continue. She had to reach her sister, she had to find her, to protect her, it was her duty, it was what she had born for. But the darkness that swamped her vision, threatening to drag her down finally won out as she too succumbed to the wild storms. Her last thought? The poetic irony, a wild storm had brought them into this world, and a wild storm had taken them out of it.
From her maw a soft keening sound of ultimate grief rose, she had failed her sister, failed to protect what was most important to her. In the end it hadn’t been their mother’s madness that had taken her, but their own desire to find out where they had come from that had. Minutes would pass before a thought would come to her, too caught up in her anguish to pay attention to the little nagging voice in the back of her mind until it finally broke through. If she had made it to solid ground then surely her sister must have also. As that heart took a beat, then a second, and a third she was flooded with hope. Hope that brought that head up and shone brightly in those crystalline gray eyes, as purpose once more filled the soul of the fire wolf.
