The darkness was breathing. With each whispering exhale the shadows crept further along the forest floor, swirling tendrils draping themselves across everything in their path, coiling around tree trunks like snakes. All was quiet save for the nearly silent footsteps of the diminutive femme who slid through the underbrush, her movements smooth and fluid, flowing like the waterfall that she approached. There was a slow swing to her hips in case the one she would meet here followed more closely than she’d anticipated, but she did not hear him, did not smell him, did not feel his presence, and so Messoria assumed that she was alone. For now.
The trees began to thin, their canopies receding and taking the shadows with them – all save for one. Messoria’s lithe ebony figure slipped from the shelter into the forest, amber eyes glistening in the rays of moonlight as she glanced upwards, taking in the myriad of glittering stars far above her. Before her laid a clear, rippling pool, the falls cascading down to kiss the surface of the water. It was beautiful. It was…perfect. Well, she amended, nearly. If someone happened to stumble through the underbrush this late in the evening, they might be met with a startling discovery, but Messoria was done waiting…and already she’d specified that it would be here. Tonight. Messoria felt whole. Pure. Ready.
Her heat had come on only days before, and she’d been careful to keep to herself, not daring to even dream of venturing to the mainland. At last she’d emerged from the caverns to seek him out – her mate, her love, Goliath. In the months between the seasons, she’d missed him terribly. He’d been busy, as Emperors were bound to be, but there were still nights where she longed for the comfort of his deep baritone, and the warmth of his body as she slumbered beside him. As Kairos grew, so too did Goliath’s duties, until Messoria had resigned herself to the fact that she would not be able to see him as much as she would like. But tonight, he was hers. She’d encountered him earlier that day while the sun was still high above the island, trying but failing to warm the frigid air. She’d brushed past him as closely as she’d dared, silken ebony fur meeting his own mottled pelt, doe eyes rapt upon his face as she’d whispered, ’By the falls tonight, my lord?’ It had been a question, her tone soft and breathy with just a smattering of hope and anticipation there for him to hear. Messoria did not command her alpha, so she’d lowered her gaze as modestly as she could manage and slipped off before hearing his answer, leaving only a brief touch and the proof of her heat, the telltale scent that no male could miss, in her wake.
It seemed like it had been only a few weeks, not months, since she’d last waited in anticipation for her mate. She’d been new to Kairos then, enthralled by the very sight of him and honored to not only have caught the Emperor’s eye, but to be granted the privilege of carrying his young each year as well. Now, things were different. With time there had come love, something that Messoria had never expected to experience. In her younger days she’d been flippant and jealous, fiercely determined that whoever she chose to bestow upon the privilege of claiming her body would be hers and hers alone. But with Kairos had come Goliath, and with Goliath had come others. And Messoria was strangely comfortable knowing that while she was not the only one he took each season, she was still his, entirely. She had known from the very beginning, and she had happily given her heart to him still, guarded as it had been. It was no different now.
Forward she strolled until she stood before the pool, her scent calling him as clearly as her heart did. She doubted that any male would dare disturb her here before Goliath at last found her and put an end to her lighthearted game – and any who did so knowingly would surely suffer for it. And should any femme stumble upon her on this night, she would carefully turn them away, too impatient with the need to fulfill her body’s sacred purpose to wait a moment longer. So when Messoria at last heard the sound of someone approaching, she turned and gazed in the direction with the smallest of smiles pulling at her muzzle, her heart thundering in anticipation, betraying the calm set of her features.
”Goliath.”
