It was time, Messoria had decided, to pull herself from the stupor she’d fallen into. While her heart was not healed, she knew that she could not continue to mourn what was lost. And so it was that she found her strength, though sometimes still it faltered. She, Messoria had decided, could not afford to seem weak – especially now. The breeding season was upon them, and surprisingly only one she-wolf had begun to sport a bulging belly; Sabaoth’s Consort, Odara, seemed healthy and happy from what the Matriarch had seen. And it was Messoria’s duty to ensure that it stayed that way. There was the matter of the two newborn pups she’d helped the nameless white femme who Sabaoth had brought ashore deliver, as well. Roka had willingly taken them, it seemed, and Messoria had been relieved. It was a blessing in disguise when Roka’s season had come late – or perhaps early; had it not been for her, the pups would not have had milk to nourish them and survive.
The morning found her moving swiftly through the trees, following a familiar scent as she angled towards the caverns. She would have known the smell of her youngest daughter anywhere, and it was Fawn she sought today, simply for her company. Ever since the disappearance of Nimue and Morrigan, Messoria had worried that her other children would follow suite. And with Croix and Hyperion participating in the Agoge, her diminutive daughter was the only of her children who currently remained upon Ina’mos – though her brothers would return in time. It was an opportunity for Messoria to spend time with her entirely unhindered; she would have no pregnant belly or new pups to care for this season, after all.
The scent lead her to the caverns, where Messoria paused briefly outside before slipping into the cool dimness of the cave. Amber eyes seeming almost to glow in the low light, the she-wolf proceeded forward several steps before stopping, cocking her head to one side. ”Fawn?” She called quietly, her voice echoing further into the tunnels. She did not wish to disturb her daughter if she was sleeping, or if she did not want company, so Messoria stood still and quiet, patiently waiting to see if her call would be answered.
