Though the day had just started, Hannibal and his small companion had been traveling for several acres already, exploring the new land that Airila had claimed under Arche. It was a barren, frozen wasteland at first glance, but evidence of life was everywhere the wolf looked--tracks in the snow, some much larger than he cared to see; splashes of tails and birds in the unfrozen ocean, where Hannibal wouldn't dare to swim; even the occassional kicked-up hare, though it was nearly impossible to see the white fur against the pure snow until you were upon the poor creature. Indeed, it was incredibly difficult to find prey, and Graham had not stopped whining about the fact since the two had ventured north.
"We won't spend much time here, Graham. Just enough to understand the land, should it need protecting. It is my duty, after all," he said to soothe the dog, though there clearly was no making him happy; Graham was a delicate creature, and the upheaval of his environment into this frozen tundra was too much for him to accept for now. Perhaps when they returned to the Shyia, he would calm down and they could visit Cryothia again in the summer when it warmed up--though it was unlikely it would ever be very warm.
In response to Hanni's words, the painted dog nipped at his shoulder, having to stretch his neck slightly to do so despite the length of his slim legs, and the wolf understood that he would be forgiven--just not in that moment. With a chuckle he continued on, his broad feet packing down snow and his yellow eyes watching the land carefully. It might be a large expanse of white snow, but that did not mean there were not hidden dangers. Some of the tracks he spied on the ground were reminiscent of those made by brown bears, but considerably larger than he remembered. If there were larger bears than that here, he would have a considerably rough time keeping himself and Graham safe.
For now, however, there was no sign of danger, or much else. It truly was a desolate place at times, this new land, and Hannibal wondered briefly what Arche planned to do with the new land. Airila was certainly growing quickly enough to warrant the expansion, but what could be done with such an unforgiving and frozen land? Hannibal made a mental note to seek out Arche soon, as he had not been present when the expansion had begun. Perhaps he had explained it already.
