Gasping and panting, Kegan collapsed on the beach and focused on keeping himself conscious. The swim from Ina'mos to Vor'asa had taken all the strength he had, and the poor wolf was struggling to catch his breath. Half of him still lay submerged in the gently moving ocean, the motion doing nothing to calm him as he lay prone and helpless. Luckily for him, the cliff that connected to the beach was an imposing obstacle, and made it harder for any predators--or even other pups already on the island--to approach him as he lay unprotected.
The swim had been almost impossible for the smaller-than-average Kairos male, and he was honestly amazed he had made it this far. As he began to calm, Kegan thought about who else would be on the island going through the motions they were forced to--at the males at least. He wasn't sure if he would see them all, or any of them, but he thought briefly as well about Liadan; would she, as independent and strong-willed as she was, brave the swim and become a female warrior? She was certainly capable, more so even than he was, but he hadn't heard her speak of it.
Either way, Kegan's one concern now was getting to his feet, which he did so with grunts and groans. Every inch of his body seemed to scream at him, but determination hardened his resolve enough that he was able to stand. Cursing himself for not learning to prepare his muscles, the young male took slow but steady steps toward the looming cliff before him, hoping against hope that it would not be as difficult a climb as it looked.
He was wrong.
The rocks crumbled and wiggled beneath his large paws, and fear gripped him the entire way up the face of the bluff. Several times, the wolf thought he would simply fall back down to the beach, in which case he decided he would simply lay there until something got him. It wasn't worth it, the Agoge, for a wolf who never planned to fight another; why couldn't he simply learn to hunt, or watch pups? It was ridiculous for the males to be expected to fight always, when Kairos already had more warriors than it needed. Who would even dare to attack?
Once he reached the top, Kegan dashed a few paces from the edge and laid down carefully, again panting from the effort he exerted to make it where he was. This place was going to kill him, he just knew it. There would be no relief until he made it home, even if he managed to get an egg, and then he would be expected to train. His father would be ruthless in his attempt to train the new warriors, and the Emperor likely would treat them harshly as well. Was it necessary? Kegan didn't know, and didn't want to find out.
But it was expected of him, and to remain in Kairos, he would need to toughen up. Leaving was not an option; Roka meant too much to him, and how could he make it on his own anyway? He would be killed as easily as a hare. So, with a scowl and a defeated sense of self, the male lifted himself up and trudged on, looking for some shelter and fresh water to quench his immense thirst.
