Golden brown eyes scanned the landscape that lie before her. It was a beautiful place; covered in green moss and river plants - even in these winter months - she was taken aback at the sight of ocean life skirting the banks of the streams. This would be where she would find her next meal, she decided.
Her fur was still thick with the salty sea water that guarded this small island off the coast of Anikira. It had been a long journey across the continent to a place where no pack wolf seemed to rule; there was no scent of markings anywhere on the territory. She had to practically tiptoe the edges of packlands in order to make it this far, and she was exhausted from the effort. She had held off on hunting for a couple of days now, and fresh water was a blessing to behold. The red woman's mouth was parched and she could feel the rough rubbery texture of her tongue against her lips when she licked them.
Cracked pads led her to the edge of a large stream. Here she would dip her head and allow her dry tongue to lap at the cool water before it. Golden eyes would shut with relief, feeling as the refreshing substance swarmed in her mouth and coated her throat all the way down to her empty stomach. Her paws urged her forward and suddenly the girl was wading into the shallows of the stream, still drinking, as the icy waters flooded over her legs and across the soft fur of her belly.
Eyes opened with a snap as she rolled into the shallow water. It was so cool and refreshing that she could not resist the bath of fresh water through her thick red pelt. She opened her mouth once more to let one last gulp of water flood her mouth before she crawled out of the river, shaking her body with multiple tremors to free her fur of the moisture. Her rump touched the ground lightly and she turned her head to clean the rest of the ocean from her body.
Only a few feet away, a large crab watched her with skeptical eyes. When Sadie froze to look at the thing, it responded by snapping its claws in her direction. It was obviously apathetic to her particular situation, and clearly challenging her to make a move.
A smile played at her lips as she forgot her grooming and rose to her paws, giving her pelt one last shake before advancing on the thing. At her approach it took a couple of steps back, as if suddenly realizing that she was an actual threat. Sadie was too fast for it. Her muscles pushed her forward with ease and closed the distance in seconds. She raised a paw and swatted at it, flipping it onto its back.
The crab was stuck and had no chance of flipping itself upright. Sadie felt a strange sense of pride wash over her as it struggled, knowing that she had won the very short battle. She circled the thing and dared herself to paw at it again. She did so carefully, avoiding the frantically snapping claws and wriggling legs. With a sigh and a reminder that playing with food was childish, she stood on her hind legs and smashed both of her front paws against its armored shell, smashing it to death.
Wasting no time at all with pleasantries, Sadie thanked the gods for their contribution and begin picking the soft meat from beneath the crab's shell, savoring the flavor as it slid down her throat.
