The tiny pup sat at the waters edge, just out of the reach of the waves. Her sides heaved lightly, her breathing just beginning to slow. She had been traveling for three days now, which was a long time for a five month old, and this was her first break in a few hours. The little she'd eaten had been scraps left by other wolves, or whatever else she could find. She was too slow to catch much on her own, especially because all of the walking had done a number on her leg. The old, badly healed injury had never quite stopped bothering her. It throbbed when she spent too much time walking or running on it, and if the weather was bad, it ached. She didn't notice much though. It seemed so normal to her at this point that she gave it very little thought, and when it hurt, she did as her body instructed and took the weight off of it. She was a funny sight, hobbling along on three legs, but there certainly wasn't anyone around to give her a hard time about it, and even if there was, she wouldn't have minded.
Sleepy eyes wide with curiosity, Trella had her gaze locked on the waves. She'd never seen anything like this before. The biggest bodies of water she'd seen in her short lifetime were ponds or rivers—nothing like this. What was even more fascinating was watching the millions of tiny raindrops hit the water. It was beautiful, yet at the same time unbelievable; she couldn't help but wonder how so much water could exist anywhere, let alone in one place. A small smile played on her lips as she gazed wondrously up at the grey skies, and out at the brooding waters. It's the kind of love and appreciation for the world that only a pup could have. Unloved as she had been with her past "family," it was shocking that she had maintained any sort of love for anything, but Trella thought nothing of it. The world was a vast, beautiful place full of wondrous beings and things to see, and she was ever grateful to be a part of something so amazing. Naturally, this wasn't exactly going through her head while she watched the rain collide with the waves; such thoughts never linger in a young mind. All she could think of was how pretty the water looked, and wonder how on earth all of it came to be.
Because she was motionless in her fixation, the pup was a funny sight, sitting perfectly still in front of the wide ocean spreading out before her. She was tiny, even for her age, and her fluffy baby fur was saturated with water and mud in almost equal parts. Her front left leg was subconsciously held above the ground to keep her resting weight off of it, and her ears were pricked forward with interest. To the passerby, she would look like nothing more than a little white puff on the shore. She was beginning to look a little underweight because she'd had next to nothing to eat the past five days, but her thick baby fur hid it for the most part. Naturally she wasn't thinking of it because she had such a steady fixation on the water, but if she didn't find another pack or at least a foster parent, she would starve. Something nagged her in the back of her mind that she had to keep moving, but for the time being, she'd already forgotten why she'd been traveling in the first place...seeing something as amazing as the ocean seemed reason enough. Unable to shake the feeling that she was forgetting something, she stood, keeping her aching paw just above the ground. She pulled her attention away from the waves regretfully, and gazed down the beach. She knew she had to find somewhere to go, but where was she supposed to go from here? She plopped onto the sand again, this time facing the stretch of beach before her. Deep chocolate eyes thoughtful and searching, she looked carefully over the coastline and the shore, as if trying to come up with some kind of answer to her thousands of questions.
