Great mountains towered over the valley. The way those mountains stood so tall, one would almost assume they ruled as guardians over the land. But looking once again, the treacherous slopes and steep cliffs were a tell-tale sign of the true danger that lay ahead. The mountains were blanketed with a thick coat of snow; and though wolves had tracked through it, wind had whipped away all traces of footprints. The emaciated moon provided very little light; allowing the stars to fill the void where light normally was. Shyly, almost, the stars peeked out. Like small treasures, they filled the black velvet treasure box, the splendor of the full moon forgotten.
Standing at the base of the mountain, an arctic wolf drank in the scenery. Her eyes and mind in combination processed all that surrounded her in order to make up for her lack of smell. Her smell was off because of the limp rabbit that was crushed between her jaws. Life blood still trickled from it's mouth. she-wolf warily listened to her surroundings. The beating hearts of birds nested in an evergreen came to her attention, along with the prowl of a mountain cat somewhere along the eastern side of the land. A snow-shoe hare darted across the terrain before her, but the wolf dared go no closer. The strong scent-mark of a pack kept her respectful. Between the trees before her was the entrance into their territory. "Kuna, if you learn respect and tradition, then good fortune will follow... Kuna winced painfully at the thought of her mother's words. Roselen had been a smart wolf who'd taught her much about life and so Kuna respected the words of her mother.
Kuna's enchanting blue eyes fell to the offering in her mouth. It was unlikely for a young loner to be accepted into a pack; inexperience tended to keep other packs pushing her away. Kuna wasn't exactly the best socialist, but her strong instincts and fleet-feet were what kept her from total isolation. Packs would accept her, but her strange nature would cause them to spit her back out. Kuna just wanted to belong. Kuna's eyes were transfixed on the tall mountains once more, but she was lost in thought.
Breaking her train of thought, Kuna shook her head. It was pointless pondering the future when the future stood before her. Her heart began to pound in her chest. Looking once again at the border, she hesitantly stepped forward. It was about 5 paces forward, but Kuna looked uncertain. Kuna was afraid she was never going to find her own home. Is this even worth it? I've been in this exact position too many times. Is it worth it to be rebuked once more? Maybe I should just go... Kuna growled at her own pathetic thoughts. Shut up negativity. No. No. I'm going to find my own true place in this world and I'm not going to give up. So what if I've been thrown out by other places? This place is different. I can feel it. Defient to her negativity, she stepped forward boldly. One step. Two steps. Three steps. Four steps. Five steps. Over the border.
