OOC: BTW, Argent, Adhara doesn't show her emotions on her face unless she means it to... And she's not that bad an actress. X3
Oh, and you mentioned Kohara in your post – was it meant to be Argent Alku?
---
"The Zahir pack was the pack of the desert lands, the Occasus. From what I've heard they had quite a few problems with their alphas. Well, alphesses really. I don't think a brute ever ruled that pack. But anyways, the volcano in their territory erupted and the pack was forced to flee to the plains. They lost their first alphess to the lava flow. No trace of her has been found. The remaining wolves managed to regroup, but from the calls that rang out their little meeting spot was infested with a rather vicious duo of wolves. The one to worry about, a brute named Alastor if I remember correctly, attacked the pack and took their beta, who would have been the new alphess, hostage. From what I've caught of the rumours, this Alastor fellow may or may not be a cannibal. He's also apparently teamed up with someone called Ardemu and I have a feeling that nothing remains of the Zahir pack. I... I heard the howl from their alphess not long ago. It was bone chilling and simple, 'Zahir is d-dead.'"
Very interesting! Now here came a chance to rap Argent Alku down a peg or two. Adhara made her eyes go wide in fear when certain words came into play, drawing on her memories to strengthen her fear, until she was at the point where she was one with her memories. If not for the fact that her "Aggress Mode" voice was rapping on the back of her skull and telling her to keep a grasp, she'd surely have let her emotions spill over. She was definitely starting to hate the fact that her feelings came on strong, fast, and hard, but here it was at least useful. For example, when "volcano" and "erupted" appeared almost consecutively, she let a shiver run down her back violently as she recalled the swim to Anikira, when the waves tossed her about and licked at her injuries, and the black water closing over her head many a times. When she heard of the cannibalistic Alastor, she remembered the gruelling battle with her foster brother, stopping short of her victory, and winced visibly and made her fur stand on end. Not even an experienced wolf could tell it was faked now, for it, in a way, was not at all. The fear was truly in her heart, grasping at her sanity, and by one thread of logic she hanged on: she was using all this pent-up emotion as reinforcement; she was not in these situations in reality, just in her mind.
The last words of the Zahir Alphess, though Denali's voice, brought her logical mind back on autopilot. It analysed the words for her, breaking them down into raw information: Zahir's lands once contained a volcano. Whether it is extinct, dormant or active is unknown, as of yet. A band of wolves, now confirmed Ardemu's, tore the pack to shreds. The Alpha female acknowledged the failure of the pack. Next target: Ardemu and Alastor. Find out more, but from a different source, and subtly. She filed away the report and thanked her mind – herself, really – and managed to stammer out a "W-woah, that's harsh," using some leftover fright from the previous display to bolster the believability. The mottled female inched towards Mike, involuntarily, as if for protection.
Mike had asked another question of Denali: the past of the Tundra female. This had triggered a shocking response from the white wolf, and Adhara watched discreetly, a perfect mask of attention towards Mike over her face. In reality, her mind was spinning. Every sign the white female had shown was a confirmation of the affliction Adhara had suspected; the way she suddenly slumped onto the sand, the gibberish that fell from her mouth; the whimpering and the forced closure of her eyes. Adhara knew what it was. She'd experienced a version of it before, herself, when Aggress Mode first retreated from her mind after she nearly killed Sirius. But she pretended she was watching Mike instead of Denali, and hesitantly sent the male a beckoning glance, and looked up, concerned but holding her tongue, when the Tundra Wolf replied, "My nightmares are mine alone, thank you. I am a loner by choice and I've walked these lands since I was two."
The Eastern Timber felt an excited shiver run up her spine when Mike moved close to her. One point for the actress, she thought smugly, and turned to look down deliberately when Mike's paw touched hers. Now, honestly, what should she do? What did young wolves do when they fell in love, anyway? Her mind prompted her: Smile back, you goofy kid, and keep smiling as if he's the best thing that ever happened to you. She did so, letting her tongue sneak out a little when she grinned, still looking down at her paws in shyness. This was getting on pretty well, despite that Argent Alku's piercing eye. She'd have to find a way to –
Denali had growled.
Adhara jerked her head up in a sudden revelation as she remembered the action that had come so long ago, but, at the last minute, turned so that she was staring at Mike. Another flawless movement executed by the Eastern Timber. Out of her peripheral vision she watched the others, while she thought about what had occurred when she wasn't paying attention: Denali, having heard her question, had let out a small growl. Instincts immediately warned the female that this harsh sound was possibly directed towards her. What could be the reasons?
One: Denali, like Argent, had seen through her disguise but did not point it out. Not unlikely, as Adhara was still refining her image of happy-go-lucky Lauren, a character she'd never played before. But then, she was a skilled and experienced actor in other areas, so what's to say she hadn't pulled it off flawlessly as usual? But the fact that Argent, a wolf younger than herself by about a year, could tell it apart happened to be a great blow to her ego. She couldn't rule the hypothesis that the Tundra Wolf had seen the truth beneath the fiction, as well, out.
Two: She was, quite simply, irked by the question, for whatever reason – hypothesis dismissed. She didn't care much if she'd offended anyone, let alone a complete stranger.
Three: Some other reason, as of yet, unknown to her. Adhara would give this some thinking-over when she was alone; currently she needed to keep her attention focused. (Damn that Argent; couldn't she just believe the façade and stop being so perceptive for once?) This might be due to her question triggering a negative event that had occurred in the past, though...
She deliberately stirred her tail when Mike's laid across it, so that the tip of her own tail now covered his, and the furry appendages became semi-entwined. To be honest, it was interesting, playing a wolf whose heart had just been touched by young love. She kept up her façade of excitement and joy, and blinked, a tad seductively but also a tad shyly, at Mike when he spoke again. "Well, there's no use in all of us just sitting here, we should maybe go get something to eat."
Ahh, so now there's some sense in this male, Adhara thought. She herself was getting hungry. She didn't know about Argent – and she didn't care a sod – or Denali, but they might be hungry too. Her belly emanated a growling sound, and, truly embarrassed, she patted it with the paw previously touching Mike's and placed it back down, touching the Grey's again, and deliberately.
"Sounds like a plan to me. How about you lead the way, Denali, since you know more about this land than the rest of us." Argent had spoken up again, and Adhara mental-scowled. She hadn't missed the glare from Argent just now; she was merely ignoring it for the sake of her façade. Now, as if she'd just heard, she nodded vigorously, and exclaimed, "I second you, Argent. I'm getting hungry too, and Denali probably knows more about the land than any one of us here." The last part was true – Adhara, as proud as she is, can't honestly admit to herself that she knew the grounds. But taking all of Denali's running-around in account, the Tundra female probably has a good grasp of the landmass.
Speaking about Denali, what's her response to the newest request? Adhara fixed a watchful, concerned eye on the older white female. After all, she had shown that she wasn't completely stable, and Adhara knew by first-first-hand experience that wolves in such a state were prone to be rash. Aggress Mode rapped on her mind again, reminding her not to be too cocky, before withdrawing, and Adhara replied with a wry smirk mentally. She was actually relieved when Denali replied, steadily, "Food sounds splendid. Unless you're up for fish and feathers, however, we won't be finding much to eat on the beach. If we head toward the Plains, we should be able to find some deer at least. Maybe some elk or a bison if we're lucky. We're not very far from the Oriens either, but I don't think Xinelil would enjoy us hunting in his lands. I could introduce you to the Aldgar pack though, if you'd like?"
In a flash her mind was working again, although this time, it took about five seconds for the thoughts to pass through her mind. The prey present on the plains were already known by Adhara. After all, she hadn't spent her months on the island slacking off. When she's not discreetly picking off loners to satisfy her bloodlust – speaking of which, Aggress Mode was feeling hungry for it again – or leeching knowledge off others by tracking a loner to the boundaries of a pack, she'd hunted small- and medium-sized prey to keep herself fed. While she hadn't touched large deer, elk or bison in a while, she'd taken down small fawns single-handedly, and she was proud of her little achievements. So she pretty much skipped the first part of Denali's response.
Hmm, so this Xinelil is the leader of the Aldgar Pack, which resides in the Oriens. The Oriens had a mountain range running through it, so the obvious choice for pack dens would be in a cave of sorts, up high. Less chance of attack during winter and spring, and harder to fathom than forests, which other territories might also have. Not a good pack to infiltrate if she wasn't suited to the weather and couldn't make a fast getaway if she needed it. Let's leave it up to its own devices now, shall we? She consulted Aggress Mode, who replied with a noncommittal, mental grunt. But then, she'd better scout it out as well, and it'd be befitting her adopted persona. She was supposed to be hungering for company, so she ought to snap at the first pack that came over.
With an "accidental" nudge towards Mike, so that her shoulder and elbow swept his torso fur, she replied brightly, "Well, I suppose I can do with some food in my stomach right now, and there's nothing more fun than a hunt! I've never hunted bison, but elk sure tasted good. How about a group hunt for elk, or we split up to grab us some deer?"
Then, as if she'd just registered Denali's information on the Aldgar Pack, she delightedly exclaimed, "You mean there's a pack nearby? That must be where the howl came from! Can we go over and see it, please? Where's it?"
Don't act too eager! Aggress Mode's all-too-familiar voice rang out again, in her mind. Allay that excitement with some apprehension.
She did so. "But, wait, what if... the wolves who took care of Zahir Pack... are around here or something? Is Aldgar a powerful pack that can defeat those bad wolves?"
Speaking of "around here", Adhana registered yet another presence a ways back where she'd approached from. She wasn't one to worry herself to death over unknown factors, so she simply wrote it off as a possible threat that ought to be checked out after this. For now, she left the surveillance to Aggress Mode, and focused all of her "sane" self on the upcoming topics: Finding food and scouting out Aldgar Pack.
