The sky was blue and a faint breeze ruffled the short grass. Occasional clouds that promised a storm later crossed the sky, casting shadows down on the plains below.
A lone wolf trotted along these through the grass, long stride well-adapted for the flat ground. This one was a she-wolf, gray and white with gold eyes. She was wandering, not in any hurry and not going anywhere in particular.
In fact, it would seem that she was merely enjoying the day. Her wet nose was up in the air as she smelled the warm breeze. It tasted faintly of wildflowers and rain..Spring, in other words. This was good, the she-wolf's tail wagged occasionally.
It was Tain of the Plains. She was obviously happy to be out and about in the nice weather, even if it was by herself.
Normally, of course, she had a traveling companion..Tain thought maybe the other would like some 'alone time' and had gone off to find a good snack. Squirrels, she had thought, might be nice, although it was hard to find them out on these plains. No trees.
Still, the she-wolf had heard of something called 'ground squirrel'. She thought it sounded rather dirty and unpleasant to eat, but others had told her they were actually quite nice. Apparently, thought, they made burrows and lived all together, so you had to sneak up on them very carefully.
Tain kept trotting, now sniffing more for the elusive prey than just to take in the breeze. Her stomach was rumbling, reminding her that it had been a few days since she ate.
The grass grew slightly longer as Tain went on, until she came to a small stream in the field. This didn't have any fish in it..it was more of a runoff than anything else. Still, Tain could use a drink. She paused to lap up the warmish water, ignoring the fishy taste. Tain had never been able to stand fish, but all warm running water tasted of it.
As she raised her head, something rustled in the grass nearby. Tain froze, ears pointed forward, tail held straight behind her, and sniffed the air lightly. She wasn't sure what this was..it could be anything, even another wolf. Tain had learned that, when one heard odd rustling but couldn't see what it was, they must hold still and watch for wolves and bears.
Just another thing you picked up living by yourself. Tain watched for a second, then relaxed a bit. She figured it wasn't a deer or squirrel, as those would've come right out of the bushes and into her teeth. It must be another Creature..she meant a Wolf.
"Who's there?" Her voice and tone weren't blunt or brusque, but actually curious. And, as always, her head tilted slightly to one side as she asked the question.
