The ground was hard and uncomfortable beneath the steady thrumming of her paws. A muffled growl broke through her silent lips. The sound was annoyed. It was annoyed not only because of the icy ground packed down hard beneath her paws, but because the general scenery annoyed her. There was no cover out on this forsaken ground. The only vegetation was sickly and sparse; it was much different from her own homeland and it made her uncomfortable. The freezing rain didn’t help either. The she-wolf’s tri-colored head was lowered between her sleek, well muscled shoulders. A well equipped nose sampled the air more thoroughly then necessary, untrusting of this strange landscape. For secondary sensory input, her ears swiveled around her head, taking in the minute sounds around her. And, though redundant, dark amber eyes scanned the scenery warily, looking for any signs of life.
Life had not shown itself yet. Talise had scented what resembled a border, though only the single scent of a male was present. This fact made her scan more and made her more wary. The presence of another wolf could , mean good and bad things for her. This male could bring the hope of joining another pack. However, it could mean her imminent death for trespassing. He could be just rouge trying to survive in this unforgiving land. Maybe, if he was rouge, he would be interested in joining with her to make a pack. Hopefully he wouldn’t take it to mean being mates though. As she pondered this, her mind recoiled from the thought of finding a mate. Only downside to the whole ‘creating a pack’ thing.
Would this god-forsaken land ever produce some decent cover? Talise’s mind raged. This blasted openness was really getting on her nerves. She wondered if the whole territory was like this. If this was a territory staked out by another wolf, it had to have drinkable water some were near. Water meant vegetation Prey too. The scent of a strange, prey-like animal drifted from the pitted earth. Holes, she realized. The creatures must dwell in them. Talise padded closer to a strong smelling hole to investigate. Pricked ears caught the faint sound of small animals chirping to each other. They were all down too deep to bother trying to get a meal. Blasted weather should have me under decent cover. They’re smart. Talise thought as she plodded along through the freezing rain.
Cold didn’t bother her. Wet didn’t bother her. Cold and wet put together bothered her. By now she was fairly annoyed. She had been keeping a steady trot for a while now, and there had been no sign of the male who she scented earlier. Finally, she had come upon a bush that would completely cover her. How convenient, Talise thought wryly, a grin forming on her lips despite her annoyance. With one last swivel around of the ears and eyes, she lowered her ears to best shed the rain off, and ducked beneath the enclosing branches of the scrawny shrub. Pulling her limbs as close to her body as possible, Talise settled down to wait out the rain. She would continue searing later. With a deep breath, Talise settled her head on her paws, flicking her ears now and again.
