At the base of Pievunt-An, the great volcano central to the island of Anikira, there were close to no places to find shelter. There was the Isdyn's Deep option, but during the hot hours of the day, the cave was much too hot for most. To all sides of the fiery mountain laid the sands of Rodorr, which was the hottest part of the continent, by far. During the day, it could prove to be fatal to wander into the sands due to dehydration, so it was only logical to hunt and explore during the night hours. Vital to desert survival, the Aughgar river laid to the eastern border of the sands. At the very southern tip of the desert expanse, the Endyt beach proved to be the dominant relaxation place for all the wolves of Anikira, as well as the Chamoru Plains, rich in life. The parts of the continent that the packs of Salen, Aldgar, and Haishin resided in, however, were significantly colder than the Occassus where the duo chose to reside. Though, in truth, they knew no name to this place where they had come to make their home, for in all of their explorations through the sands, they were greeted by none.
Avani and Vee were a rather odd combination. Avani was a strictly desert breed, whose coat limited her time spent in areas that were not warmed. Her genes did not rest with strength, but rather with stamina, and the ability to survive without water longer than an untrained blood stream. Her diet mostly consisted of the fish brought to her by her companion, for without full movement of her left hind leg, she was not able to move quick enough to hunt, and she had less of a clue about fishing than she did about how the universe held itself together. Vee, however, was a completely different story. His origins laid with more adaptable breeds, specifically ones with coats that shed. He was quick and full of strength, and so could catch and eat most everything edible that came his way. He was an impeccable soul, from what Avani had seen, and had a heart made of pure gold. The albino was a bit more susceptible to sunburn, with his light colored skin, but the femme was confident he had learned enough healing basis that these kind of minor ailments would not pain him for long.
The female's leg had been injured at the very start of the winter season, bitten by a coral snake, which was partial to watery areas in the desert, particularly oases. When Avani first came upon the river she called her beginning, she had been overeager for a meal, and foolishly sprang into the nest of one of these venomous snakes. In an attempted slow flee, the snake bested just above her paw, resulting in her removing the damaged tissue there, and destroying the source of the venom-fueled blood. The venom, though a small dose, racked her with weakness and extreme ailment for the first week or so before it was completely flushed out of her system. With the toxin gone, Avani was able to focus on the actual healing of the wound after finding out her paw was in a state of paralysis, with Vee as her guide, helping every step of the way. Avani could physically do nothing in return, though she showed him the ways of herbology and healing, but the male stayed on.
At first, the awkward creature was not completely sure about having a companion, but after realizing she would need help in healing, she offered Vee a position as her healing apprentice. When he accepted the offer and chose to stay with her, Avani was granted with the miracle of spoken word. Vee was completely deaf in both ears, but was proficient at reading lips and body language. The two were able to communicate wonderfully, and through the process, the small Ethiopian fae was able to become at ease with her companion, and occasionally had trouble remembering happiness before the night of her accident.
The way fate worked that night was a very peculiar incident.
At the base of the volcano on the island, there was a small overhang that gave way to a small opening crack that dove into the core of heat within. The stream of hot air was very small, though constant, and a very pleasant steam warmed the backs of those who laid within the small enclosure. Just outside the base, there was green brush and a few small cacti, their prickers outstretched, grasping onto small rodents or insects that dared too close. On the tops of these pricklers, there was the occasional desert flower of reds and pinks, and sometimes yellow. The yellow flowers were said to be the most rare, and were often called "Mimics" because of their desire to be just like the sun.
When she was a pup, there was a legend that was told in the small femme's original pack. Once, when the world had just been created from the god's clay, there lived a group of cacti in the middle of a desert. They all chose to bloom flowers in beautiful shades of red and pink, which were the colors of modesty and love. One of them, however, chose the color yellow, for he wanted to be identical to the sun. The other cacti could only watch as the yellow cactus' flower grew and grew, until it was bigger than the cactus itself. The little cactus was proud of his large yellow flower, and bragged all day long, for all the days in the week. One day, he even claimed that it could shine like the sun. The other cacti told him that this was impossible, but the little cactus was determined. One day, he stretched his petals toward the sun, so high that he accidentally touched the surface. His big flower burst into flame, and disappeared before his eyes. When the little cactus reappeared with no flower, the oldest cactus in the patch just looked at him and said, 'Oh, Mimic. The one who flaunts his petals is the first to have thorns.'
On the floor of the overhanging cave, the small Ethiopian wolf laid. Dusk was upon them, and the femme's natural timer told her to awaken. Avani blinked her caramel eyes, letting them adjust to the warm glow of light. Inside the cave, it was completely dark, though over the sands, the edge of the sun shone just over the dunes, with a soft yellow fuzz being emitted from the sides. The sky was an enchanting pattern of blues, pinks, reds, and oranges, each intertwining themselves with another. Cloudy silhouettes danced in an intricate ballet against their radiant background, with no limit to their graceful leaps and bounds. Their music was only the darkness that would swallow them whole, a happy, solemn harmony that would fill the souls of any creature with warmth.
Avani stretched, her long legs parallel with her back, and her tail perpendicular. A long yawn escaped her mouth, flashing her ivory teeth and pale pink tongue. With a fast lick of her lips, Avani walked, with all the grace she could muster with three legs, toward the mouth of the small cave. She turned her head to the left, and looked down a few twenty meters and saw the sauna-like cave oozing a solid blanket of steam. While it was too hot to sleep in, Avani found use of it as a cleanser, her pores opening up and letting her bathe in the perspiration of the magma inside the volcano. The female looked back into the blackened cave, then back out to the sands once more. "Vee," she called softly. "You must wake up now."
Avani knew well that the male could not hear her voice, but it no longer itched her as it once had. She knew he would be around soon, for he always was, and with him, she had nothing to fear.
ooc: 1349! :) Decided to make her quotes colored, as well.
