A sharp yelp pierced the calming night, which in turn evoked a second yelp from what was once a slumbering beast. Requiem had long since fallen into a dreamless sleep. It had not been a deep sleep, however, for it was rare the Arctic male ever fell under the spell of deep sleep. Paranoia had ruled him for so long that even in the realm of the unconscious his nose and ears were keeping note of every scent and sound. No unusal noise was missed by the large white male, thus alerting him to the subtlest hint of danger.
The danger this time wasn't really all that dangerous though. The cowardly bark had been enough to rouse Requiem from sleep, but it hadn't lasted long enough to be a threat. Upon hearing it, the male had instantly bolted upright with his own yelp of fright. He'd then tucked himself into a cowardly ball in hopes of turning invisible. This trick had long been disproven, but he'd done it so often it was nothing more than reflex. Requiem rarely ever confronted danger. He much prefered to hide from it.
Brief scuffling caused him too peek one eye open, his trembling body begining to still as his eyes told him what his ears could not. There had indeed been another wolf too close for comfort. He'd only caught a brief glimpse of it, however, as it scurried off into the night. How odd. For once Requiem had been perceived as the threat, while asleep no less. It was a slightly unsettling feeling. Usually when others stumbled across him, their curiosity would beat out their fear and cause them to investigate the odd looking, cowardly lump that had crossed their paths. For once in his life Requiem had been treated in the exact manner he usually treated others.
Unfurling his head from his side, silently his lone eye watched Eudoxia investigate the spot where the other canine had fallen. She seemed just as confused as he was, and this brought a small frown to his maw. The last thing he knew his companion needed was more stress. After everything that had happened between them, he wasn't even sure how much more he himself could handle. A shake of his head intended to chase his thoughts away as the female returned to her spot not far from him. It wasn't quite enough though, and the strange appearance and dissapearance of another wolf had left the brute too unsettled to sleep.
Laying his head back down in the sand, the forepaw of his fully natural leg draped itself over his nose. His lone stormy eye settled upon Eudoxia... his friend, his companion, the first wolf to earn his trust. They'd been through so much together, and after the day's horrid events Requiem honestly just wanted to try and start over. He didn't want to lose his only friend. Just the thought caused a quiet sigh to escape him. He was also still bothered by the fact that they'd been briefly intruded upon. That was enough to make him ponder his thoughts alloud. "Usually I'm the one that does the running away..."
