Kaoru was awoken to the sound of crackling flames. The sound echoed throughout the caverns of Isdyn's Deep; which severed as Kaoru's home pack, Zahir's dens. His brown hues flickered open, before closing. This pattern repeated several times before he could finally manage to keep his eyes open. He was exhausted. Standing up, Kaoru noticed how skinny he was, and how his skin seemed to just hang off his bones. 'I probably look ghastly' He thought to himself, his brown hues peering around the dens.
Dura, he was still there, sound asleep as he had been when Kaoru himself had fallen into the dark slumbers. Wrinkling his nose, Kaoru could smell the burning, the burning of the lava from deep within Isdyn's Deep. He knew there were pools of lava somewhere within the dens, he could hear them every now and again. Just like the sound he'd woken up to now.
Closing his hues once more, Kaoru's body careened slightly, he was still tired, and wanted nothing more to rest. To let the darkness of sleep to take him once again. However he knew if he were to sleep any longer, he would surely die of hunger. It seemed to be ages since he'd eaten. With Alya's death, Zahir's falling out, Avani, Vee, their new pups, Irina, and... Alya's spirit. Kaoru had to take a moment of pause, and he fell back onto his hunches. The force of it all came weighing back down on the young Ethiopian. So much had happened, and in such a small amount of time. Why, he was unsure if it was all just a dream or not sometimes, it was all just a blur. Fogged over by the passage of time.
A low, violent rumble cut through Kaoru's thoughts and he groaned at the pain the plagued his growling stomach. Slowly, Kaoru once more peered over at Dura. The pup, he was still young, and Kaoru was left in charge to stay behind and watch the young one. Likely because Vee had noticed he'd been a while without rest. Kaoru was grateful nonetheless.
'I can't stray too far.' The Ethiopian thought as he patted outside of the dens, his hues never once leaving Dura, in cause he woke. Then, Kaoru ran out of the dens, and went to search for some suitable food. Maybe he would bring back enough for himself and the young pup, more than likely he would be hungry as well.
Surprisingly it did not take long before Kaoru spotted a jack rabbit, licking his dry lips, the Ethiopian lowered himself to the ground and watched the rabbit hop around unexpectedly. If it only knew what was about to come. Kaoru knew hares where fast, so, he waited. Waited for the right time to jump just when it was close enough where the chase would not last long. For a moment, Kaoru almost grew bored of the waiting, when the hare was at the mark Kaoru had made in his head. Leaping out, Kaoru dashed out at the hare with great speed, ignoring the pain and protest of his muscles, and the furious pounding of his head as his blood and adrenaline slowly pumped through his poor nutritious body. Snapping his jowls at the small creature, Kaoru's tongue was greeted with fresh blood and his body immediately halted and his jaws snapped shut around the creatures body, breaking it's neck and killing it instantly. Kaoru did not wait like he usually did to eat, or make sure it was really dead. He ripped into it's warm flesh and devoured the whole creature, every bone licked clean.
Never had he been so hungry in his life. And with a soft sigh, Kaoru lied his head on his paws, letting the warmth of the sun radiate on his back. Resting, he would let the hare settle before he went after another, then another and another once more. Until he was full, and even then, he would hunt some more for his pack. As the Ethiopian thought of chasing another hare down, and another after that in an endless cycle, he drifted off into a soft slumber.
