Was Lan self-destructive, or just plain foolish?
That was the true question here. His lies were simply digging a hole for him—a shallow grave, if you will—and yet, instead of struggling to break free, instead of clawing his way out, he merely dug deeper into his lies, until he was permanently entwined within them. Trapped. But Lan did not see it as trapped—no, he saw it as an exchange… Lan’s own identity traded for this temporary façade. That’s all it was. A new mask for him to wear. A new life for him to live, if only for a little while.
But Lan found that it was worth every minute.
"Oceans you say!" Nova exclaimed, mirroring Lan’s own excitement. "What a leader you are," she continued, a comment that caused Lan to burst out in silent laughter. Lan, a leader. What a laughable concept. A leader of misfits he could be, perhaps, but a leader of a functioning pack? Certainly not. But he merely grinned a grin worthy of the infamous trickster that he was. “Oh, well, y’know… I try not to brag,” Lan replied, lying through his teeth. After all, if Nova weren’t the object of his lies, he would probably be bragging to her at this exact moment about his amazing skill, flaunting his lying expertise in a sickening show of arrogance. But why wouldn’t he be a substantial liar? He only did it every day. To himself. To strangers. To all those around him, and this particular situation was no different. Just another to add to his lengthy list.
"Oh you simply must show me your lands one day!" she added, and Lan hardly faltered. He was in an act now, think later state of mind, and therefore his answer was immediate—but granted, not well planned, especially considering the fact that he had no lands to show her. But instead of stating this, he dug his hole a little bit deeper and agreed with her, nodding. “Yes, they really are quite the sight… Oh, forgive me.” He smiled, lips spreading up his muzzle. “I’m bragging, aren’t I?” Lan paused now, smile still plastered across his face as he, for the first time, considered the situation. “But it is for that reason that I don’t let just anybody accompany me to my lands…” He eyed her now, indicating that she was the just anybody that Lan spoke of and hoped his point was clearly established. And now, satisfied with himself and his elusive capabilities, he grinned just a little bit wider. Like a slimly little eel, he slipped from your grasp the moment you least expected. Or at least, that's what he likes to think.
But still, the question remained… Was Lan self-destructive, or just plain foolish?
Only time will tell, I suppose.
OOC: Aah, don't worry about it Nova. I know you've been busy. But HOORAY you replied.
