Scout loved the sun and the heat. They were a comfort to him. The rays of the sun were sometimes the only thing keeping him sane. He had traveled here in search of other herbs but, when he had gotten to this desert, all he wanted to do was relax. The sand was hot on his pads and he loved it. He wanted to lay in the sand, roll in the heat and take a nap in the sun. He was panting and smiling his crooked smile. He saw the river. It was crystal clear and blue as day. It looked wonderful to him. It looked like the perfect place to relax for a few hours. He currently was assigned to no pack and could do as he pleased. He didn't have to collect herbs if he didn't want to, he only did it because he did not want to be unprepared when an injured wolf comes to him or he comes to them. He didn't really want to collect herbs today, he wanted to be lazy. He had been doing a lot of running around recently and it was time for a good nap. He was carrying a little basket full of herbs and he had put it down so he could sit. It was jagged by the edge of the water and lined with dense bush. It wasn't worth climbing through all of that to be by the water. He watched it and thought Scout-like thoughts. He thought about how pretty the water was and how badly he wanted to play with something. There was not much here for him to play with though.
The sound of the rushing water was making him relaxed. He stretched his front legs and then laid down on his side. A puff of smoke surrounded his body and made him coughed. He laughed at himself and shook his head. He looked up at the sun for a moment to admire it and then at the water. He couldn't see much of it but, he could see little bits and pieces in holes in the bush. The sound of the water made him close his eyes and drift off to sleep.
He had slept for about 45 minutes, a good napping time for most but, for Scout it was rather short. He yawned and stretched. He looked much like a cat as he did so. He clicked his tongue on the top of his mouth to separate it and make it more comfortable. he sat down and played in the stand with his paw. He drew lots of pictures, mostly of random lines and circles. His artistic skills were lacking and he knew it. He laughed at it and shook his head. Yup, that is a pretty interesting picture. He laughed to himself. He just looked at it because it was kind of funny looking.
He went back to looking at the water. It was so pretty. The way it moved kind of put him into a bit of a trance which was weird because he is very easily distracted. He just sat and stared at the beautiful water, sitting in the blistering sun that he loved and just had woken up from a nap. How could this day get any better?

Who is that girl I see Staring straight Back at me
Echo felt like the invisible wolf, from the first moments she had made her way to this strange island, running and never stopping, she had barely run into another soul. She had tried out for a pack, just once. Her nose had told her that wolves live there, but she had waited at the border... for days, and no one had come to her. It was as though she was not important enough for an audience. Or maybe... her stomach clenched at the idea that maybe they knew what she had done in her past, in the pack she had been born into.
She had met another wolf, but all he wanted was the kill she had freshly made. She had backed away from it, her confidence to damaged to dare fight. Her stomach empty and her spirits so far sunken she might as well have never had them, she continued to wonder, barely even knowing why. There was no one here to save her, why would anyone bother?
The ground was hot against the pads of her paws, burning, and wasted, as she herself felt more with every passing day. She had grown up in company and despite her silent nature she was not accustomed to isolation, not as a dessert was to desolation. The sun beat against her back without mercy, and in moments her tongue lolled from her mussel and she wished so badly for the cool shade of trees, the sweet taste of morning dew...and well she was musing over impossibilities, for the comfort of other wolves, and the nonsensical babbling of their daily lives. But if wishes were trees she could make a forest... and cross that off her sad little list.
When the ground became less aggravating beneath her, and the soft fell of ground replaced the bitter touch of earth, a wave of relief came, timed with the soft, cool wind that found its way to her tortured and unkempt coat. Her paws stopped, for the first time since the cool of the night had left her and she found herself moving again, some instinct that drove her to find somewhere, someplace to call home.
when the scent of water came to her, she almost sagged in relief. Anything to get this tortured heat off her back was a miracle enough for the moment. With renewed vigour she continued on, until at last, there it was before her. She gave thought to nothing but that sweet, sweet smelling water and plunged forward, diving into its embrace with no care of anger, simply feeling the cool soak into her coat and the heat of the day cleansed from her Paddling simply to keep afloat, rather than to move forward she looked at the water, and her own eyes looked back at her. She saw how haunted she looked, how her ragged and wet coat hung helplessly around her, and she realised with a shock that she did not for a moment recognise the damaged wolf looking back at her.
As Scout was sitting and watching the water, something broke his trance. It was another wolf, a white female. By the looks of it she was a Mackenzie Valley, not really the desert type wolf. Mackenzie Valleys had think hair and were built for strength. He wondered what she was doing here in the desert. She had plunged into the water which was more than understandable. It was hotter than the surface of the sun here and she had a thick coat. It was winter time on the island so it was probably even thicker than usual. Hi there, what's a winterish breed doing way out here in the desert? His tone was friendly and playful. He was still much like a pup in many ways even though he was three years old. The female was not unattractive in the least bit and it was nice to have some type of companion here. He wasn't exactly sure if she was going to be friendly back or if she even wanted to talk but, he would make it an option if she wanted to. I'm Scout by the way. His crooked smile was dancing along his lips. His tongue was hanging from his mouth from the heat. He decided to take a sip from the cool water. He walked over to the water and lapped it up. He half-expected the female to splash him which would also be fun. He needed a play partner and he was hoping that the female might want to play. He had not gotten to play in a long time. He waited for the female's response. He was expecting a name and and explanation for what brought her here. Certainly someone with such a think coat would not purposely go to the desert for no reason. Maybe she was a shaman too and looking for herbs, maybe she had gotten lost, maybe she was looking for someone. Who knows?
He was secretly hoping that she would stick around for a little while. It was lonely all by himself and it was breeding season. If she stuck around then he would definitely be here when she got into heat. He knew it was wrong to think these things but, he was a guy and there was not much to do about them. Besides there is nothing wrong with wanting to mate. It was natural and it had to be done to keep the species going but, thinking about it with a complete stranger might have been wrong. Scout loved pups and wanted to have his own someday. He knew that he was not the most attractive wolf so the possibilities of that happening were slim so, when a female did come along, it was hard not to think those thoughts. Scout had almost no self control when it came to that, he had almost no self control when it came to anything.
He was still a little groggy from his nap so he yawned. His tongue came out and touched his nose. He thought about entering the water but then decided that he didn't really want to. He was not a fan of being wet. The thought of being wet made him shiver a bit. He looked at the female again. She's perty.
