[atrb=background,http://tinyurl.com/6u4flwm]She already does, a curt voice said in the back of his mind. He would have argued, if he didn’t believe it wasn’t true. Another whine, another nose full of dirt. Orion, the old wolf he’d lived with for two years after his arrival to Anikira, had left Zodiac with an order, one he wasn’t sure he could ignore. “Go find Akihra, Zodiac,” the old brute had wheezed, shaking with the effort of breathing. “She will be able to take care of you in my stead. I was an acquaintance of her grandfather’s; she’ll know my name.” Zodiac had questioned the crazy old wolf, but never got a good enough answer. The old wolf died mere minutes later, leaving the young brute with a million unanswered questions and only a name. What were the odds that he’d found the very wolf he’d been looking for? He’d never been a lucky brute, but this was just unbelievable! And Akihra! Would she believe him if he told her about Orion? Did she really know the old wolf or would she believe them both to be crazy? Zodiac whined again, placing a paw on the bridge of his nose. He had never been all that great at making big decisions like this. Everything up to now, that he can remember, had been decided for him. He was far too absent-minded to be able to stay focused on a decision. And this one, telling Akihra what he now knew, was a major decision. Could he do it or couldn’t he? He didn’t know. “Quit your whining and get outta the way, wolfie.” Zodiac looked up, startled to find himself nose to nose with a small, red creature that was standing on its tiny hind feet. He’d never seen such a weird looking animal before. Ears perked up, he nudged the little thing, earning a chatter of protest. “Did you hear me, boy? I said get outta the way!” Grumbling, the creature started walking around him. Zodiac’s interest, however, had been piqued. He rose to his feet, causing the little creature to jump to the side with a shriek, its fur rising on its shoulders. “You wanna go? I will take you out wolfie!” the creature chittered, bouncing from side to side before feigning an attack. Startled by this strange creature, Zodiac jumped back, keeping a paw in the air to swat in defense if necessary. “What are you?” The creature narrowed its beady black eyes in annoyance. “Do you see me asking you stupid questions, wolfie? No, you don’t. You wolves can’t see past your fat, ugly noses.” The creature feigned forward again, causing Zodiac to shuffle back, before it turned back the way it was going. “I dunno what you’re whining about, wolfie, but you may want to shut your trap. Don’t want your kind to hear you making all that noise. They’ll think something’s wrong with you.” The creature darted out of sight, leaving Zodiac all alone again. He heaved a sighed, placing his paw back to the earth, looking down at both front feet. “There already is something wrong with me,” he muttered, a wave of sadness washing over. He was pathetic, and even a strange creature was telling him so. Shaking, the brute lay on the ground again, closing his eyes as a few tears leaked out. What was he going to do? “Alright, wolfie. I’ll listen to your troubles.” Startled, Zodiac lifted his head. The strange creature had made its way back into the clearing and was perched on a small boulder on its hind feet once again. Neither spoke for a moment, the silence obviously annoying the little creature. He twittered at Zodiac, as if trying to get the great brute to talk. It didn’t work. The creature sighed, shaking its small head. “This is the part where you talk, wolfie.” More silence followed. “Am I really that interesting to you?” Zodiac nodded, tilting his head to one side. The creature sighed again. “You are certainly a character, wolfie.” He bolted forward, his lithe body moving gracefully, until he stood before Zodiac. He looked at the brute for a moment before smiling slightly. “The name’s Baron, and you’d best never forget it, wolfie.” Zodiac wagged his tail, happy to have made a friend. “Of course I’ll remember it, Baron. Or, at least,” his tail drooped, followed closely by his ears, “I’ll try to remember it...” Baron bolted forward once again, swatting Zodiac on the nose. The brute yelped, rubbing the wound with his paw. He growled at Baron, only to be growled at right back. “I don’t know what’s wrong with your brain, wolfie, but I will make you remember my name if it’s the last thing I do. And don’t you growl at me,” he added with another swat. This little creature was quite rude and mean. Zodiac wasn’t sure how he felt about him. He kept his ears flat to his head and glared at Baron, but ceased his growling. Baron nodded curtly, clearly content with the wolf’s obvious understanding. “Good boy. Now. Tell me what’s troubling you, wolfie. I can help.” Zodiac eyed Baron doubtfully before heaving another sigh. It couldn’t hurt, right? He told Baron all about Orion’s death wish, and how he’d met the very wolf he was supposed to. He told Baron about the confrontation he’d had with Akihra only hours before, and how she didn’t trust him at all. Baron remained silent through the whole story, nodding where appropriate. When Zodiac had finished, he lay his head upon the ground, letting out a whine. “But I don’t know what to do! She doesn’t trust me! What if she thinks my story is as unbelievable as it sounds? What am I supposed to do?” “Well first, you’ll stop the whining!” Baron scolded with another swipe to Zodiac’s nose. The brute yelped. Before he could growl at Baron, the animal had begun to speak again. “You shouldn’t go underestimating the alphess, wolfie. She’s not as strict as she may appear. Tell her the truth and she’ll be reasonable. You’ve already seen that side of her.” Zodiac gave the creature a puzzled look, earning a sigh. “She allowed you to remain in her lands, did she not?” Zodiac nodded. “See? That’s reasonable. And if you tell her about this Orion wolf, I’m sure she’ll believe you.” Believing he’d done his bit, Baron started to leave Zodiac to his thoughts. “Wait! Where are you going?” Zodiac cried in a panic. He jumped to his feet and sprang forward, pinning Baron to the ground. “I can’t do this alone, Baron! You have to come with me!” Squirming under the brute’s paw, Baron snarled, “I don’t have to do jack, wolfie! Lemme go!” Zodiac shook his big head frantically. “Please Baron! Please come with me! I can’t do this alone!” Baron risked a glance into Zodiac’s pale eyes. They were filled with the same panic that filled the brute’s voice. With a deep sigh, Baron ceased his squirming. “Wolfie, you don’t know anything about me. You don’t even know what I am.” “So tell me,” Zodiac said desperately. Baron glanced at him again, shaking his head. “I can’t believe I’m about to do this... Alright, lemme up. I ain’t gonna go anywhere, wolfie!” Hesitantly, Zodiac released his hold on the small creature. He watched as Baron rose to his feet, shaking himself down. Baron glanced behind him, to the trees that he’d been heading for, before he turned back to a frantic looking Zodiac. “I’m a weasel, wolfie, probably one of the only ones in these lands. And we’re not known for being all that reliable.” A goofy grin formed on Zodiac’s lips, causing Baron to eye him warily. When the brute wagged his tail, the weasel sighed deeply. “But we’re friends now, Baron. I know that I can rely on you, no matter what.” Zodiac turned and headed for the forest again, glancing back only once to see if Baron was following him. The weasel remained where he stood, watching as the trees swallowed the brute. What was he doing? He hated being hassled by stupid predators. But something about this wolf was different. Could he really get along with this mentally insufficient brute? With a small smile, Baron bolted into the trees after Zodiac. *Acquired Baron, weasel* words:: One-Thousand, Four-Hundred, and Fifty-Three (OMG words XD) tags:: None hurr mood:: Paranoid, panicky, distressed....
