A small pup seemed to limp lightly down the small gravel road. It was a man made thing, nestled slightly in her packs lands. She smiled, she was a dark thing with ebony fur that shown darkly in the sun, but it was not her lovely fur that caught others attention, but her eyes. They shown brightly, but a different color, one was a dark blue something most pups where born with, but the other was a dark green, something only some of her kind got later in life but quickly lost. Her mother often told the little girl that she wished that she would keep the two toned eyes, that they brought out her fur more then snow would. And frankly she would love to keep them too, she loved looking into ponds at her eyes and found they where must like herself, unusual.
But it was not her eyes which brought her to this man made path, the pond she loved to look into was in fact lay in the opposite direction. But no She was going to a place that she had predetermined as safe to meet him. Just the thought of him made the pup spread her legs in a loopy puppy run. She had waited days for her to meet him again!
He was a stout thing, a brute in more ways then one. His strong build had no trouble keeping up with the small pup. His mangy pelt was also black, but no where close to the pups lovely shin, his eyes where a sharp brown, a earthen tone that most of his family held. Nothing about this male screamed attention.
He sighed, as the Beta he should be with his Alpha not trying to watch where his wayward daughter was going. But it was a command from him, command to find just what called the pup from the safety of the pack more and more. At first the Alpha thought she was just exploring close to home, that she would be fine, but just in case he sent his most trusted companions…. His Beta. And it seemed to the brute that the pup was not indeed exploring but instead know exactly where she was going. This made the male fume, it meant that he would have to fallow her, as he was doing now…
The little girl looped softly down the path and came to a small bush, she knew exactly where she was, she fallowed this path many times to meet him after they had become friends. She stopped at the stump that the humans made before her time, then trotted forward, counting every step, until ten, she then looked about her self seeing no one, then pounced into the bush that now lay to her right. At that point she counted another ten steps then turned right, and pounced into that bush. It was like a game to her, a game that ended in a prize that was greater then her fathers praise. When she emerged on the other side her face lifted in happiness. "JASPER!"
He watched her stop at the stump the humans made the day the Alpha had his first litter, her litter. She must know something about it, how the humans had tracked the pack of wolves to there den the day the Alpha's mate was giving birth, how they smiled and joked as the tree feel onto the den killing all but one pup, the pup that he now fallowed. But she did not stop to look at the stump but instead bounded forward, her little paws moving evenly, like she was counting something. The male blinked at this odd behavior, but she stopped again and fidgeted a bit, the male dove into the shrubs next to him, knowing that where ever she was going she would not want anyone to see her, just goes to show just what the Beta knew.
He had told the Alpha just what a trouble maker his only child was, just what problems she got into, not just the 'exploring', but the constant scent of cats that just never left her. How the pup would get Cat smells on her, the Beta had no idea. Or her everlasting mouth! She was always lippy, always challenging her fathers right hand! One Day he would have his day to show that little scamp just who was who, to show her that she was not to be the next Alpha after her honorable father, but instead HE would be! A small grin lifted his lips, yes now that was a thought!
The male was so caught up in his own ambitions, that he lost track of the pup, that she slip from view with the image of her death. But he did not lose her, no he could still smell her nearby and in fact there was something else also in the wind, and with a small squeal from down the path in the underbrush confirmed the Beta's suspicions, the pup was meeting someone and he was not a wolf at all, but a cat.
The male jumped into action then, maybe this was his chance to show his Alpha that his daughter was not right for the pack. Grinning the male rushed into the bushes and saw just who the pup was meeting. A lynx sat just a leg length from the ebony pup, and they seemed to be to caught up in a joke of some kind to notes the large brute coming upon them.
She look at him with all the love the pup could contain, he was her dearest friend, someone that gave her comfort and love back, he was like a brother to her. They had meet a stormy day and had never been apart. "Jasper! GUESS WHAT!"
The lynx smiled, his tufted ears and whiskers blowing in the gentle wind. His face was kind as she jumped about him, talking at a billions miles per-hour. She would chat all day if he did not stop her, and make her go home. He knew just how much of a risk it was for them to meet, but he didn't care, his love for her just couldn't keep him from her. "What?" His voice was high pitched but getting lower as the days go by, he will be able to leave his mother soon, but knew the wolf was far from leaving her mother, but once she was old enough he hoped she would leave with him, so that they could be true to themselves, Jasper knew the wolf was a true cat at heart, and that she would never be happy in a wolf pack, no matter how hard she tried to fit in.
"Well I was in this one bush and was about to hop on this bugger but he got out of the way and I ended up landing on my face in MUD!" Her laughter filled the air, and he could not help but also smile, she may only be a pup but he hoped her silly side would always be with her, that was what he loved the most about her. When he could no longer breath from his stream of giggles he looked up at the pup his eyes shinning with all the love in the world, he wounded if it was odd that he, a lynx, loved a wolf as if she was his own kind? But he pushed the question away not the for the first time, and looked about them, he was the oldest therefore responsible for them both. His eyes drifted over the bush that protected there small hallow from view, but his eyes traced over a par of brown eyes, eyes of a wolf!
Jasper jumped to his feet, startling the pup in the process, her sprung forward and placed himself between her and the wolf in the bushes. The wolf sprung out his eyes sharp and his teeth bared. Jasper hissed, he would not let any harm come to the pup, nothing would harm her until he was dead! The wolf sprung at him digging his sharp fangs into the cats neck, Jasper had no chance, he was a forth of the size, and yet to be full grown, so no matter how brave he was Jasper had no chance.
The Beta had his teeth around the impudent cat, taking the bit of life that was his. He did not care, the lynx was dumb enough to dare stand up to a full grown wolf, and deserved to have his life taken, but it seemed that the cat would not go down without a fight, even as his life slowly drained from his limbs, the cat still got his claws around the brutes muzzle, causing deep gashes. That angered the male even more, causing him to crunch down harder, taking the last of his life from him.
The male grinned as the cat went limp in his teeth, and looked at the pup, and grinned deeper. Shock and fear showed on her face, small tears slid down her cheeks, yes this was what was needed for him, he needed the Alpha's child to fear him above all, maybe if she feared him, she would not challenge him later in life. Once this was a errand the Beta hated and now he was loving the chance that he got!
The ebony female sobbed, her tears filling a small pool that now lay at her paws. She was now two years of age, Her fur was scruffy and unkempt, her blue and green eyes sad. She missed him, she missed the days as a pup that she spent playing and swimming with him, she missed everything that he was to her. But most of all she hated herself for his death, it was her fault that Salim fallowed her that day, it was her fault for not smelling him.
Her face was turned to the sky the small stream of tears slowing, but not stopping, this would be her last day with her birth pack, Her father was sending her away, she was a disgrace to the pack, she would never be of use to him, and she was happy, she needed to get away, she needed to never lay eyes on this small hallow ever again, it just brought to much pain to her, she needed to find new happiness, happiness she would never find here, with the memory of Jasper. The ebony youth bowed her head one last time and got to her feet, a new wave of tears filling her lovely eyes, this was much harder then she thought it would be, she would never forget the happy days she had with Jasper, she would always hold her brother within her heart.
A branch snapped behind her and the Beta moved through the bush that kept the hallow from view, a evil grin lined his face, he was finally getting his wish, he would be the next Alpha and she was being scent away, so she would never be able to challenge him again. "Gabriel, it is time to go." His grin deepened, he had hoped to take her as his mate, but the Alpha said no and beside he did not care either way. She was out of the way now and she would always be. The ebony youth bowed and said nothing, Salims smile faded, she had not said on word to him since the day he killed the stupid cat, after that she seemed to change over night, hardly talking to her father, and never talking to him. But again he could not care, she was annoying when she talked, and he much preferred the silence. "I hope you get some manners in our sister pack," He growled at her. He turned and walked away, fed up with her.
Gabriel watched him walk away, anger and sadness filling her eyes, she knew that he wanted her for his mate, she knew he looked for the favor of her father, that was why he courted her, but every chance she got she sidestepped him, never talking to him, just as she vowed to do the day she watched him kill Jasper. She was glad she was going, but she was not going to there sister pack, no she was going off on her own and face the word by herself.
She got to her feet then and turned to the mountains, she was ready to leave, and never come back. Gabriel glanced one more time over her shoulder and silently told Jasper goodbye, then left behind the hallow into the world, hoping that happiness was not always lost to her.
But it was not her eyes which brought her to this man made path, the pond she loved to look into was in fact lay in the opposite direction. But no She was going to a place that she had predetermined as safe to meet him. Just the thought of him made the pup spread her legs in a loopy puppy run.
