Fall was in the air once again, as the normally warm nights of the Sands of Rodorr gave in to the rapidly cooling temperature that was Mother Nature at her best. The Mexican female sifted through the sand with her paws, enjoying the feel of the warmth that was stuck underneath the sand as it enveloped her feet. A soft sigh escaped from her creamy maw as she pulled her paws out, shaking them to get the fine sand from between her claws. This was her home, and she loved it. She had been away from these deserts for a while, as she had travelled the lands nearby. Her movements had been terribly slow, as the femme didn’t know the land, and had been fearful of leaving her home. What if she’d fallen from a cliff, or fell into a river and drowned? The female had taken up the challenges, however, and was proud to have made it back in one piece. The only reason she’d been so fearful, and moved so slow? Aries was utterly blind.
In truth, the blindness didn’t actually bother the young wolf. It was natural to her, as odd as that sounded, and at times she enjoyed it. Sure, she wasn’t able to see how beautiful her home could be at times like this, when it was cool enough to not worry, but her senses were much better for it. Every scent, she could smell on the wind, far before another wolf. She could hear the smallest of sounds, and she could feel how silky smooth the reddish sands were, having been carved into powder by wind. Aries didn’t need sight to appreciate beauty.
She lifted her head up, pointing it towards the moon that was directly overhead. Aries couldn’t see the moon of course, but she could sense that it was directly above her. Her nose could smell the tender darkness that enveloped her home, her body could feel the cool temperatures, and her lips could taste the night. Aries’ blind orbs reflected the moon – or were they simply copies of the great sphere, reduced in size and planted within her skull? She was happy, able to just stand there in the cooling sand, drinking in the scents of the night.
Aries, like nearly every other creature who dwelled within the Occasus, was nocturnal. During the day, it was too hot to come outside, except for when it was late fall and winter. Fall was just settling in now, and the days would still be too warm to be in the sun. The only problem at the moment, Aries knew, was that her home as going through a drought. There had been little rainfall, save for the storms that had punished the land a couple weeks ago, and the plant life was starting to suffer. Prey had been reduced as well, since no creature wanted to spend energy with so little water around. Aries knew she would need to hunt soon; her pelt was starting to sag a little, as she had lost a few pounds, and water would be needed eventually. Luckily for Aries though, she lived in Isdyn’s Deep, a small cave at the base of the Pievunt-An, which was also right next to a large, rough river.
Aries knew the Occasus like the back of her paw – she knew from memory that her home lay north of her, while the river lay east. Scent told her that the sea was to the west, although she had never visited it. From her recent excursions, Aries also knew about Xisyn, to the south, and that two packs resided both north and east of her. The Mexican female knew little about either pack, despite the fact that she lived very near both of their borders. Aries had little time for pack wolves, as they had never treated her right. No pack wanted her, they thought she was worthless; no one would ever give her a chance!
Thinking about this made Aries sigh again, but this time it sounded rather sad. ”You don’t need them Aries.” she told herself sternly. ”They don’t know who you are, and you are too good for them!” Aries growled, determined to not feel sorry for herself. Snorting slightly, she turned towards the southwest, going deeper into the desert. She was hoping to find some food, maybe a hare or ferret. Scenting the air and the sand, Aries trotted briskly, the only sound coming from the swishing of her fur. It wasn’t long before she picked up on the scent of a rabbit. Mouth watering slightly, she started to search for her prey. Perhaps afterwards she would go and get a drink.
