Evuwisp pulled herself onto the beach, panting, and collapsed next to Galdar who had made it there a minute or two earlier and collapse himself. As soon as she was still Evuwisp fell asleep, not even caring that she could smell that they had entered another wolfs territory. For this moment all she wanted to do was catch her breath and sleep. Her head was no longer splitting from being drugged by a dart but the improvement was only minimal.
When Evuwisp woke up she couldn’t move right away. Having swum from the trappers’ boat, every muscle in Evuwisps body ached. Falling asleep was such a bad idea, she thought to herself. Evuwisp lifted her head and shook herself as much as her aching muscles would let her, then sniffed the air. There it is, that scent. She picked up the scent and identified it as the scent of a pack. Not a very large one, but a strong one.
Evuwisp looked over at Galdar who was still asleep and pushed at his shoulder with her nose then turned back to see what she could. They were on a beach, but not too far away was a dense line of trees. It looked like a great place to get lost. But Evuwisp had no doubt that to go into the trees would be trespass on the territory of a pack she didn’t know. She looked back to the ocean and contemplated walking back out in the waves, but she knew she wouldn’t make it out there. Some other wolves had escaped with her and Galdar from the boat. They hadn’t made it as far before sinking below the waves. Evuwisp knew if she took that chance that she would be joining them.
Breathing a sigh, Evuwisp took as much air into her lungs as she could and let out a long note as strong as she could make it. Her howl was not deep by any means, but it was not the play howling of a puppy either. She howled to the pack that she knew owned this beach and the trees beyond. She howled to a future she was uncertain of. But she also howled because she knew she would never see anyone she knew again. This changed her howl almost to a mournful cry. It was still a call to the pack she would be meeting, but it was much sadder than she had intended. When she was done, she laid back down to await the coming wolves, trying not to worry about what she would do next.
