"No, mother was only with one brute." One brute. One male. The realization echoed in his head, the thought almost overpowering. Rhea had only had one partner in her unnaturally shortened life. Rhea had only ever been with him. A part of him revelled in that thought. His woman had been faithful, even if she had never officially become his woman. Hadrian had cared about her more than he should and to find out that maybe she had cared too was enlightening. It warmed his heart and brought a soft, wistful smile to his face.
But the realization brought other news. If left no question as to who Nashira's father was. Hadrian had been with Rhea, and Rhea had been with no one else. By default that meant he was the young femme's father. Father... 'It seems that I am a father.' The news made him feel weak in the knees, stomach churning with indecision. Though he had always been vaguely aware that he could have sired offspring, he'd never really thought about it before. The pack had been destroyed before he'd had time to consider the consequences of his actions and, since the move to Anikira, he had banished most of his thoughts on the old days to the recesses of his mind.
Nashira could not be ignored though. She represented everything he had lost and given up hope on. And now that she was here, there was no denying her existence. There was no denying the life he never spoke of, the wolf he used to be. There was no more means of running or hiding, of trying to be somebody new. His past had finally caught up to him and he had to make the best of it.
Heaving a sigh, the brute lifted his head enough to catch Nashira's eyes. There was a tenderness to his expression, uncertainty bubbling beneath the surface but no sign of rejection visible. In fact, his own expression almost mirrored that of Nashira, the small upturn of his lips only a ghost of the inner turmoil brewing within. "It would seem you are my daughter. I'm sorry, Nashira. I never knew." The apology was for his absence, not for being her father.
