Mystery sat down in the middle of the dark forest. The light of day hadn't quite lit up the forest yet. She felt happier for some reason. It was probably because she had been chosen as a hunter. She then realized. She was a hunter. She should be hunting! What was up with her? She stood up again and gazed around. She tried to do the same thing as when Kiddo observed her hunting. Silent, slow, and ready to strike. She wasn't going to let anything get past her. If this pack needed food, she was going to hunt.
As she looked around, she felt a strange sensation. The sensation that she was being watched. She pricked her ears. She heard a rustling noise. Was it another wolf? Or an opportunity to hunt? Another rustle. Her green eyes scanned every square inch of ground. Then she stepped toward a bush. The rustling definitely got louder. Then she saw a pair of eyes. They certainly weren't wolf's eyes. The eyes met hers, then the animal who owned the eyes darted away. Even in the dark forest, Mystery could see that it was a deer. She jumped over the bush and bolted after it.
By then, Mystery totally forgot about the fact that she was a hunter. The joy of speed and the thrill of hunting made her forget everything important. She just chased the deer, using every ounce of will to catch it. Then she got an idea. She stopped dead in her tracks. The deer soon stopped as well. It was even still in Mystery's sight. Perfect. She would use the same technique that got her to catch that other deer. She began to creep up to the deer in silence. She was constantly looking at the ground to make sure she didn't step on a twig. Then, when she was no more than a yard away from the deer... she leaped.
Unlike the last one, this deer didn't notice until the split second before Mystery caught it. She pressed all of her weight down on her front paws and landed on the deer's back. She heard more than one satisfying crunch as she hit the ground with a thud and killed the deer with one final bite to the neck. She licked the blood off her teeth as she looked at her work.
She really did feel like a hunter.
