Caurus had been...quiet lately. Far too quiet for the liking of the young Apennine femme laying out in the sun. Gem hadn’t seen many wolves wandering around the Lyrith pack lands, and she sort of wondered if the curse was still hovering over the terra. Not that it would ever affect her. She’d been born within Lyrith territory, and therefore had immunity. Others, well...they never stayed long enough to feel its full effects. It was almost disappointing to Gemini. She enjoyed stumbling across the mangled corpse of loners. Their souls generally lingered for some time after their deaths, and she liked hearing about their journeys.
Too bad. Caurus was empty. The princess rolled to rest on her paws, letting out a deep sigh. Empty was boring. Boring was no fun. And no fun meant that all she could do was laze around and sleep. She didn’t want to sleep; she wanted adventure. A reason to get up in the morning and face the day. Gemini slept so much these days that half the time she woke in the middle of the night. Not that a midnight stroll was abhorrent. It was easier to see when the sun was in the sky, however, and the moon had been blocked by clouds the past few nights.
“Boooooored,” the femme sighed loudly, breaking through the chatter of the birds around her. If they were pecking about on the ground, she would have chased after them. But they remained safe in their trees, far out of the Apennine princess’ reach. All at once, however, the chattering ceased. The sudden stillness alarmed the femme, and she jumped to her feet. “Something interesting?” she questioned, tilting her head from one side to the other. With shrieks of alarm, the birds took flight, scattering into the heavens. Gemini should have been just as frightened as the birds. Instead, a wry smirk appeared on her maw. “Fuuun.”
Tail arched high over her back, Gemini pranced forward, out of her little cove of protection. She couldn’t smell any predators nearby—wolf-kind or otherwise—but that didn’t mean they weren’t near. They could have been upwind from her, waiting for the opportune moment to strike. How silly the notion was. Gemini wasn’t the type to be taken by surprise. In fact, she couldn’t even remember a time when she had even battled. So why would she know something like that? Hm... The more she questioned her thoughts, the more her head hurt. With a quick jerk of her head, she gave up on that endeavor. She knew things because she knew things. Right.
A low chuckle from directly behind caused Gem’s fur to stand up on end. She whirled around with a fierce snarl, only to be met by...nothing. Blinking, the femme took a cautious step forward. Ear pricked forward, swiveled back, then flicked forward once again. There was nothing. No scent, no sound. Just nothing... Confused, the femme bounded forward, around a large rock. Still nothing. “You’re looking in the wrong place, Love.” Gem’s head whipped up, eyes locking with the powerful form of a dark beast atop the rock. Having been spotted, the brute grinned, adding a certain sadistic charm to his expression. Gemini said nothing to him. She merely studied him, wondering where he came from. He seemed to guess her thoughts. “I was born here.”
The young female grew defensive. “You were not!” she barked, fur bristling along her spine. “This land has belonged to the Lyrith pack since before you were born!” The brute merely chuckled, hardly affected by the young female’s biting words. With a swish of his tail, the black beast leapt from the rock, landing soundlessly beside the Lyrith princess. “I didn’t say I was born here,” he said airily, the smirk never disappearing from his maw. Gemini waited for him to elaborate, to tell her where he was born, but the brute said nothing more. Frustrated, she snarled, taking a few warning steps closer to him. Again, he was unfazed by her actions. “You do not belong in Lyrith, brute. Go back to wherever it is you came from and stay there.” Spoken like a true heiress.
Except, this brute cared not for the status of another wolf. He cared only for what he himself could attain. “Oh? You would chase me off? A potential packmate?” Gemini flinched. The brute caught the reaction, letting out an airy chuckle. He slowly began to circle Gemini, his movements as airy as his words. “That hardly seems the appropriate course of action from a member of the prestigious Lyrith pack.” By then, he was directly behind her. Gemini didn’t like this brute being in her blind spot, so with a snarl, she rounded on him, eyes narrowed to tiny pricks. “Then tell me, brute, what good would you be to my pack?” He let out a mocking laugh. “I have no desire to join your silly pack, Love!”
A strangled, frustrated cry ripped from Gemini’s throat as she lunged at the brute. “Play games with me, will you?” To her utter surprise, Gemini merely leapt through the brute, as if he was nothing more than a wisp of smoke. She collided painfully with the ground, her front legs twisting uncomfortably beneath her. With a groan, she rose to her feet once more, facing the brute with a curious stare. “What’s wrong with you?” she asked, as if such a thing was oddly normal. The brute laughed, eyes twinkling. “I am dead.” An icy chill filled Gemini’s veins. “D-Dead..?” The brute nodded briefly before looking off in the distance, towards the south.
He then began to regale her with his tale of woe. “I was merely defending my pride. The beast struck me down mere weeks before, using the cliffside to his advantage.” He scoffed, shaking his head. “And how could I not? Allow some mongrel to sully my name!” Gemini gave the brute a curious look. “But...you’re dead... Doesn’t that mean he killed you?” The brute gave her a flat look. “What’s your point?” She blinked a few times, as if the answer should have been blatantly obvious. “He killed you. Your name is pretty sullied now, don’t you think?” The brute snarled at her, eyes gleaming with a crazed rage. “My name will NEVER be sullied! I am Chaos! Master of death!”
Gemini shook her head with a deep sigh. “That can’t be your name,” she deduced. “You must have chosen it for yourself.” Chaos frowned at the female. He then cocked his head to one side, studying her closely. “How is it that you can see me? That you can communicate with me at all?” Gemini blinked. “What do you mean?” “I’m dead.” “Yes, and...?” Chaos gave an exasperated sigh. “I’m dead,” he repeated, as if it were enough to break through her understanding. It wasn’t, however. “Yeah... So?” Gemini was growing impatient with this brute. “Is it really that strange?”
Chaos studied the femme for a fair bit longer. She herself was strange, which could have been why she was able to see him. His caring in the matter vanished quickly. “Who knows?” His tone had become airy once more, causing Gem’s expression to mar into a frown. She felt as if the brute were merely toying with her when he spoke like that. “Why is it you remain here in Caurus?” the brute asked, intending to poke a nearby bush with his nose. Being dead, however, meant his muzzle just went straight through the foliage. “It can’t be much fun lounging about all day.” Gemini gave the brute an indignant look, lifting her nose in arrogance. “I am the Lyrith princess. These lands belong to me and me alone.” Chaos chuckled. “And that means you cannot leave?” She nodded. “What a boring existence.”
Gemini growled warningly at the black brute, though she knew her threatening demeanor was useless. She couldn’t attack a being that wasn’t of body. And even if she asked nicely, she doubted he would just leave. “What is your purpose here, brute?” Chaos grinned, the bright twinkle returning to his eye. “You intrigue me.” Of all the answers he could have given her, Gemini did not expect that one. She stared at him, dumbfounded, for a brief moment. “I... What?” He laughed. “Well, my original purpose was to haunt the dumb bastard that had the gall to end my life, but when I finally came back around, I was here.” His eyes found hers, twinkling almost mischievously. “And then I happened upon you, Love; one who can communicate with me. That is...a trait not many possess.” Gemini tilted her head. The way he said ‘trait’, made her think he was almost mocking her. With his odd behavior, it could have simply been his way of offering praise.
“What is your name, brute?” the young princess asked, reclining to fall on her haunches. She still felt threatened by this peculiar brute, but knowing he was dead had a certain calming effect. Just as she couldn’t harm him, neither could he her. “I’ve already said it,” he replied coolly. Gem snorted. “And I decided that wasn’t your true name.” Chaos lifted his head slightly, narrowing his eyes at the inquisitive youth. “Why is it you must know?” She shrugged. “We will be in each other’s company.” “Yet I do not know your name,” he pointed out with a sly grin. She frowned at him before lifting her nose once again. “A princess does not give her name before her subjects.” Chaos laughed mockingly. “And who said I was your subject, Princess?” He giggled at the dark look she threw at him before sweeping her a very elegant bow.
“I was born with the name Azazel. My foster siblings often teased me with it, so I changed my name to suit my desires in this world.” As Chaos rose to his normal height, Gemini giggled, tail thumping noisily behind her. “But you are dead, Azazel,” the brute visibly tensed at the name, “so you have no desires that can be fulfilled in this world.” He opened his mouth to speak, but she cut him off, rising to her feet. “The name Azazel suits you, and it is what I shall call you henceforth.” Chaos nearly refuted her words, but simply sighed deeply, allowing himself to be swept away by her pace. “And your name, Princess?” At first, it almost seemed as if she wasn’t going to respond to him. She strolled right past him, tail arched over her back. He turned to follow, coming short as she turned back to him.
With a mischievous little grin, she replied, “I am Gemini, Princess to the Lyrith pack.” She then faced front once again, bounding off. Chaos stood still for a moment before laughing lightly. “Does she not know her pack no longer exists?” As if chained to this young female, Chaos bounded after her, his footfalls making no sound.Chaos tamed.
