Victory was now a low-hanging fruit for Djinkka, who with one precise blow could easily snatch the life from the little she-wolf's frail body. She had killed things of much greater size and strength in the past. Enormous things. To take a large deer or elk head-on was not a task beyond her talents. She had been training without pause for over two years, after all -- first alone, and now, more importantly, with the Osani. Her God-given size and strength already put her at an advantage against most. The training merely ensured her already likely victories.
She towered over Nymph by nearly a foot. Their differences in color and size were drastic, emphasized by their current entanglement. Djinkka was crouched into a modified hunting stance: an assassin's stance. Every muscle on her body bulged tensely with potential energy. The dark fur which swallowed her large form stood on end, still damp and heavy with ocean brine. Her ears were tall atop her head, stiff in a dominant posture; her tail arched behind her, rigid, demanding submission. Her immense front paws pressed against Nymph's body, holding back just enough to ensure that she would not be crushed by the weight.
Behind them, chaos ensued. The brown male -- the one whom she had injured -- had at last awoken from his short nap and was throwing a fit. Unsurprisingly. The white one was snarling and flapping his gums at her, growling, trying to draw her attention away from her captured prey. Good try. Her concentration would not be broken by such amateur tactics. Save typhoon or avalanche, or some other horrific natural disaster, nothing could pry Djinkka's eyes from the kill when she had locked her target -- be that target deer, hare, or wolf. It was as if she and Nymph were on another plane of existence. The males made blurry, slow-motion movements around them in a dance almost comical to watch. She ignored them completely. Even if they decided to simultaneously attack her head-on, they would be too late by the time they connected. The mission would be long complete. All she needed to do was strike...
...were it that easy. Djinkka made a move to lunge for Nymph's exposed neck, but her movement hitched at the last second. As if some unseen hand had grabbed her from behind, holding her from ending things where they stood. Within, her mind reeled with self-admonition. Kill the girl. NOW. Yahvi, and all of the Osani, was shrieking their encouragement into her ears. But in that short instant, the expression on the black femme's face had morphed from murderous resolve to confusion and anxiety. The bloodthirsty film that had closed over her yellow eyes appeared to retract, and those same eyes now shone with almost childlike fear. She searched Nymph's face, which was etched with grim acceptance. Her mouth gaped open, dumbly, as their gazes met, and she looked deep into the subjugated femme's green eyes.
Green eyes. They swallowed her whole, absorbing her into their consciousness, and when she came out on the other side she was looking not at a little white wolf but at Zira. And they were once again standing by the lake on that first night that had sealed her damnation. The ethereal she-wolf took a few angelic steps forward, the green eyes glistening with concern. Sometimes, the stillness of the blue is unsettling, she whispered, and her whisper was like that of an angel or ghost. But, still water runs deep.
Djinkka made to walk towards her, hoping to gain insight through her counsel, but before her paws made contact with the ground the scene again changed. The sunset melted into night and the scenery metamorphosed from the lake to the river. Now the green eyes in the darkness belonged to Zaida, who gazed at her with an unreadable expression. One of hidden secrets, of curiosity and withheld emotions. Will you be my friend? What did friendship mean in this world anymore? The struggle for survival is ultimately a personal battle. And yet, she had fond feelings for Zaida, though the femme's green eyes had been born of hatred and bloodshed. She was the daughter of a demon -- but not by choice. She stared deep into crystalline emeralds, deep-set in the snowy white fur. What would Zaida advise her to do in this situation?
Djinkka's mind throbbed, and she felt the world spin. She closed her eyes to shut out the dizziness and when she opened them again it was once more she and Nymph, and not even a second's time had gone by. Nymph was saying her piece, accepting her fate with solemnity, and her words rung like sirens in the black femme's ears. By the time the little she-wolf's speech had ended, the uncertainty on Djinkka's her face had turned to fear; the expression was jarring on such an ugly, ferocious face. Every neuron, every fiber of her being was screaming in agony -- KILL HER! But all she could do was look with remorse at the weak creature below and stutter, "I -- I -- "
And then the blow was struck. The full force of Audas's body crashed into Djinkka's side, knocking her from her position and forcing her aside. His weight was considerable, and the impact knocked the wind out of her for a moment. As she gasped for air she quickly righted herself, jumping back up to full height and whipping her head around to glare at them all. Again her eyes hitched on Nymph, but it was impossible for her to drum up the will to attack again; her heart was suddenly filled with grief and self-loathing. No, she conceded. I will not repeat what happened on the Hills. She twisted her features back into a scowl and spat in the direction of the three. She would act as though they had driven her away by their bravery. She would not -- could not -- allow them to witness her change of heart.
"Fine," she snarled, making her voice as venomous as she could manage. "Have it your way. The girl lives to see another day. Next time you may not be so lucky." And with that she turned tail and, before any of them could stop her or give chase, she launched herself over the rocky cliff from whence she had come and dove headfirst into the crashing waves out to shore.
