The rainwater seeped into the dark cavern, pooling in swirling rivulets beneath the she-wolf's feet. Her gaze fixated on it as it moved -- staring at it, letting her eyes sink into it, unable or unwilling to look her white companion in the face. She felt the icy, wet sting against her skin, yet her body made no response. The outburst had left her numb, drained of all emotion. She felt hollow inside. The air she breathed seemed to swirl around inside her like wind through a metallic tube. She creaked as she exhaled. She shuddered, but she hid the movement from the girl.
Outside, the world was howling. In spite of the company, she felt more alone than ever.
From of the corner of her eye she watched the girl shudder and writhe as the gravity of the situation overtook her. As the images seeped into her innocent brain. Yes, Djinkka breathed, you see it as I have seen it. Don't look away, now. The eyes slowly closed, the creases between them deepening and filling with shadow. If it sickens you -- it should. Reality... is sickening. A low, snorting exhale passed through her nostrils. The girl needed to learn somehow. She was doing her a favor by telling her now. Words and visions would fade with time; experiences would leave permanent scars.
At last the wail echoed through the cavern, signaling that the girl had had enough. Djinkka's ear twitched just slightly at her cry. "No more?" she repeated, her deep voice cutting through the tense silence. She turned her head toward the female, but still her yellow eyes resisted contact. "Only if you promise that come morning you will leave this place and never return." She had to leave. They would kill her. And they would likely make Djinkka herself do the honors.
Turning away completely, Djinkka at last rose once more. She took a few slow steps towards the back of the cavern, her form now shrouded in near complete darkness. "No apologies," she spoke over her shoulder. "What is done is done." There was nothing for the femme to be sorry about. The sentiment irritated her slightly. It was foolish to apologize for things beyond one's own control. No one could be blamed for state of her life but her. She had written her own tragedy with her ignorance and lack of foresight. Now it was her duty to play it out in entirety.
Coming to a stop, flush against the back wall of the cave, Djinkka exhaled slowly. She fell into a sitting position, though her back still faced the white-furred girl. Her head drooped, muzzle pointing down, and a long silence passed. When she spoke again, there was a strange quality to her voice. Something that might have been compassion -- yet it was much too harsh. "Sleep here tonight," she said, her voice hardly audible above the storm. "I swear, you will be safe." That much she could promise the girl. She could not speak the same for herself.
