she’s been everybody else’s girl
maybe one day she’ll be her own.
maybe one day she’ll be her own.
The barren landscape stretched onward before her hollowed eyes as she walked slowly through the unclaimed lands. The silver female’s gait was uneven and ungainly, not bothering to hide her limp. The day was still new, the sun crawling slowly away from the eastern horizon, but the dark clouds were looming and the air smelled of coming rain. Her warm breath looked like a cloud against the early hour chill. All the while, the incessant whispers of winter weighed heavy on her mind, for she knew the coldest days of winter were still ahead. The she-wolf’s topaz orbs had lost some of their sheen since the encounter with the foreign male who had called himself Atoyo. Athena’s appearance had grown gaunt as winter marched onward and the prey became scarcer with the shortened days. Solo hunting excursions ended in meager meals of rodents, which meant an empty belly. She was not terribly hungry that morning, anyway.
The scene played again and again in her head: the blackness of winter in the night, the curves of sinew hidden beneath a sleek coat of ivory and onyx, the tempest looming in the distance. Bile began to rise in her throat as she thought of him. She had not yet decided if the experience and the consuming indignity that followed was a lapse in judgment, a big mistake, or something that was meant to be. At the time, Athena had thought of herself instead of the brute, of the generations of female wolves that had preceded her... what would it be like to be in his place instead of below? It left a heavy feeling in her chest. She was born a sinner. She was sad and ashamed, but she was not sorry for what she had done – not yet, anyway.
But no one had to know. And it was easier to keep a secret when no one was paying any attention. The notion of motherhood had not yet seeped into her consciousness. She left her pack’s homelands before the dawn in an attempt to evade the others. Her excuse was always the same, but she never needed to give it: she was looking for plants and herbs for healing. Athena was nothing more than a healer with no one to heal, a member of a pack for the first time, but with no purpose yet. She wanted to help Valyn and prove her worth, but the restlessness of youth seized her whenever life began to feel comfortable.
The scent of another wolf caught her attention mid-stride, and Athena’s movement jerked to a halt. The stranger was female, at least. She could deduce this much by the scent alone. When she finally caught a glimpse of the fae, she was surprised – she was a small creature, resembling a fox instead of one of Athena’s own kind. But the smell was undeniably lupine. Curious, Athena paused to watch the auburn tinted fae.
