After days of traveling, her paws had finally led her to this place shrouded by whispers and rumors. Kairos, they called it, inhabited by giants and ruled with iron certainty. It had piqued Messoria’s interest from the very moment that the tales had reached her dark auds. She’d heard them time and time again, more frequently the closer she wandered, although sometimes she wondered if there was slight exaggeration. They were like crone’s fables, told to pups to keep them in their dens at night, and yet that was what had intrigued Messoria. If Kairos truly was what it was rumored to be, she was correct in coming here. A strong pack, she had long ago decided, was where she rightly belonged.
Her gait did not falter as she crossed their border, although she was certainly aware of it. A plethora of scents drifted into Messoria’s nostrils, male and female alike, although one stood out more than the others. The alpha, she assumed, for the strong scent was unquestionably male. She had not caught his name in the midst of the rumors, almost as if there were those too afraid to speak it, but she would learn it today. Onwards she went, her slender body pushing through the foliage, breath puffing visibly before her with each breath. The chill felt good on the warm skin beneath her coarse pelt; not too cold, and certainly not warm. Then again, Messoria had always enjoyed the bitter sting of winter air when the season was at its coldest. This was nothing, yet.
After a few long moments of her dark body weaving between the foliage, Messoria heard the first hint of roaring water. She paused for a brief moment, ears pricked forward atop her cranium as she listened and then proceeded, trotting quickly towards the sound. Where there was a waterfall, there was fresh water, and where there was fresh water, there was likely the pack. She wondered briefly how they would intercept her trespassing, despite her clear intention to join their ranks, yet there was nothing she could do but hold her head high and continue bravely. She would not back down from what she wanted, no matter the risks. It was not in her nature to do so.
Finally, the trees became sparser before fading to underbrush and shrubs, revealing a clear pool nestled at the base of a cliff, where the waterfall rushed over the edge, foaming and frothing where it met the stilling water. She edged forward, longing for a sip after her journey, and yet she did not dare. This was not her home yet, after all. She was a stranger here, and she was not welcome to their resources until she had been given permission. Settling for dipping her paws quickly into the frigid pool to cool herself, she took several steps back and sucked in a deep breath, throwing back her head and parting her slender muzzle. A howl slipped forth, spilling from between her teeth and filling the air around her. It was long and searching, by no means demanding, and tinged with curiosity. She called to anyone who might hear her, specifically one of higher rank if she was particularly lucky, but she would take anyone at that moment. When she’d finished, she lowered her head, her ivory canines clacking together as her amber eyes searched the trees. She waited patiently, her muscles tight with anticipation and just a hint of caution. If all went as planned, she would find a home here in Kairos. She felt it in her bones, the deep-seeded desire to fit it, to serve a purpose. She would show them how badly she wanted it.
