Emerald glanced around, scraping the dusty turf with a shaky paw.
"Where are you?" she murmured dolefully. It had been so, so wrong to leave them...
Her gait became quick and panicked, hurrying through the clumped boscage. Emerald furrowed her brow, attacking the sod yet again. A deafening howl was released, piercing the silence of the night. Gritting her teeth, Emerald padded on.
The night was algid and unwelcoming, a bitter breeze sweeping by. Snow was on the way. Picking up her pace, Emerald sped up.
'I'll finally be reunited with someone... There'll be someone there, right there for me...'
Sighing, Emerald's gallop slowed, and she ambled on longer.
'Soon, soon.'
She stopped abruptly. Maybe she should rest. After all, the chances of finding what she was after tonight was incredibly low. Giving a grunt of waive, Emerald lowered her weary head onto her icy paws.
'Another time,' Emerald decided. Her ears ducked in submission, and her eyelids slid down at a sluggish pace. Maybe they were destined to depart, and never, ever meet again...
The wind howled around her, engulfing her small, frozen little body. Emerald's fur whipped around, dancing to the wind, swaying side to side, side to side. The fresh, sharp winter breeze stabbed Emerald's side, and then rolled away vehemently.
The moaning of a nearby tree flashed Emerald's lids open, and her amber, shimmering pools swayed towards the sound.
'Huh. What was that?' she wondered, wrapping her tail tightly around her slick nose. One day, or one season, or just one, just one, moment, Emerald would be reunited. Her heart could be healed. Her faith could be restored.
'I just really hope that's soon.'
Leaves battered her rump, wiping her fur with debris. An angry howl rattled across the plains, buffeting Emerald's fur.
Maybe, just maybe she'd meet someone.
