Light brown paws padded quietly along the ground, seemingly the same color as the loosely packed dirt they walked along. Dark brown head held high in a relaxed natural posture. Emerald green eyes scanning the area, left to right, right to left, looking for the slightest bit of movement made be any other besides him. The enormous orange hued ball of fire seemed to swallow the earth within it’s hot core as it started sinking further and further leaving what was earlier a light blue sky shades of pink, violet, and crimson red. The air was dry with a crisp coldness to it and the wind whistled through the bare branches of the tall trees scattered all around. Without a doubt, it was a mid-winter night.
The ten month old male puppy had just crossed through an open clearing in the woods when his ears perked, suddenly catching a glimpse of a doe frolicking up ahead. He paused dead in his tracks and crouched low to the ground, the brown mix of his coat helping him blend in to the dead leaves that littered the ground. Slow step after slow step, he stalked closer and closer, patiently determined to have a successful hunt as he envisioned himself bringing down the tan deer in front of him. He had gotten no more than a few feet behind her when he faltered in his step, landing on a dry crisp leaf that, in the silence of the woods, made a loud breaking sound. Having been altered to the danger behind her, the deer wasted no time, leaping away from the now empty handed male. So much for patience , he thought to himself with a frustrated sigh.
With his head held low and his shoulders slouched, Lex searched for a place to stay for the night that wouldn’t leave him too vulnerable to loners. Finally, he found a spot under some overgrown brush and curled up with his tail draped around him, trying to ignore the growls coming from his empty stomach. With another sigh, he closed his eyes and drifted off to sleep.
