Deep within the marshland, she had found her own private utopia. There were no siblings in sight, only a thick cluster of twisted roots and gnarled trees. The island belonged to her father, but this space, this little chunk of swampy land, was all for Lilith. She had even sprayed her marking on a couple of trees, as the adults. Someday, if she strived for it, maybe she would have a real territory to call her own. For now, she was satisfied with the place she had found, devoid of all the familiar smells of the oldest Kairos pups.
She was already sick of all the little pups. They were needy and small, she couldn’t play with them, since they not suitable yet for Lilith’s form of violent entertainment. New litters seemed to come every week now. Even Xena, who she had looked up to like a hero for her accomplishments, had grown more rotund, and Mother said that she would have pups of her own very soon, too. Lilith had balked at the notion – a warrior was not supposed to have babies! She reasoned internally that since Kairos was not currently fighting a war, then maybe it was okay for the only female warrior to be just like the other females – fat and pregnant, miserable and useless. Several hunters were unable to perform their duties because they were about to deliver, or had just done so, their agony echoing through the cavern where they all slept. Even though she was bigger now, encroaching the size of her own mother, each of the pups was expected to return to the massive cavern every night.
Soon, however, everything would be changed. Lilith dreamed of the Agoge, of Vor’asa and training alongside her noble sire, day and night. She knew it would be difficult, especially since she was female. As far as Lilith could see, there was no obvious difference between herself and her numerous brothers, destined to be giants and conquerors. She was missing a few parts, but that meant nothing to Lilith. No one could convince her that she was any less than the males.
She had been surrounded by boys all her life – five brothers, each possessing very different personalities, as well as Othrys and Olympus, who Lilith had known for as long as she could remember, since their mothers were close friends and their litters born only days apart. Othrys and Olympus had a different father. They were usually more fun to be around than her brothers. Erebos was always moping around and feeling sorry for himself, even though he had it all: size, strength, and the male parts Lilith apparently lacked. Beleth was hardly better, silent as the stars. There was Typhon, whose energy matched her own, even if he had a big mouth and seldom a kind word for his sister, who returned his caustic attitude and unfair sneak attacks. Samson was all white, which apparently made him special.
And then there was Panda… She would miss her only full-blooded sister terribly, even more than Mother, but the Agoge was no place for the smaller, weaker femme. Pandora would be a hunter someday, or one of the other tasks ascribed to the feminine members of the pack. Kairos needed hunters, and while Lilith enjoyed stalking prey throughout Ina’mos and catching her own dinner, she did not view herself akin to the other faes. Perhaps one day, she would be a mother, but the notion of losing her Panda to an unworthy male brought a deep growl rumbling in her throat.
I would rather kill a male than let him near us.
She would no longer be able to protect her sister, but for Lilith, life was just beginning – and she intended to make it a good one. One day, all the wolves of Anikira would whisper her name in fearful reverence. The violent fantasy brought a smile to her masculine features, previous irritation melting into excitement as she paraded around her quasi-territory on over-sized paws. She could hardly stand the wait.
A sound caught her attention, and she stopped in her tracks, nostrils testing the breeze for a hint of someone nearby. The scent was undeniably lupine. There were predators that called the swamp home, but the large pup stood tall, mismatched eyes exploring her surroundings again. "Who is there?" She no longer had a speech impediment. They were all growing up so fast.
