It was not simply a matter of he said, she said or the common drama that was associated with socialization. No, Vorilye was tired of the manipulative, foul creatures that he bothered to allow the honor to be in his presence. Apart from the likely "friendship" he had found in Shayde, these wolves were stupid, useless, and dead weights to his pack. They could not follow orders for shit, and he could not recall the last time he had seen more than one or two at a time. Angel and Meridian had seemingly vanished, Kallik was still yet to be returned to his pack - that would be fixed very shortly - and Shayde was hanging around. At this point, it was him and the smaller femme that made up the pack in his mind.
The brute snorted. He was halfway tempted to oust the two wolves from his pack and simply not tell them. When he happened across them, they would kindly find their way out of Acerbus or suffer the consequences. Perhaps he was simply stressed, but Vorilye was about to lose his cool, something he had not done in a long time. The last time that had happened, he narrowly escaped with his life. His pups were out there somewhere running what should have been his pack. His mate, or should he say ex-mate, was a manipulative bitch that had no right to ever be around him. He was powerful, influential, and by far one of the most formidable foes in battle. He was the whole package; so why would they turn their backs on him?
To this day, the logic behind their rebellion escaped the brute. Vorilye grumbled to himself, remembering all the hurt and betrayal he had suffered. No longer would he allow someone to get that close. He was in it for himself and no one else. It was foolish, in his mind, to even allow Shayde to get as close as she had, but hopefully she would prove to be more useful than she could be hurtful. When she took off after the stupid bitch who encroached on his territory, Vorilye saw to it to step away from the situation for a while. He could not tolerate such ridiculous behavior at the time; he was sure that Shayde could handle it.
If she could, Vorilye would ensure that she was rewarded. A smile flashed onto the brute's face briefly before he was lost in thought once more. I have to get this situation sorted out. If I do not handle it soon, it will spiral out of control. We are going to Kamari and getting Kallik, the brute decided with an air of certainty. The femme would not come willingly, but it would be foolish of that little alphess to stand in his way. He was rightfully coming after a wolf that had made a mockery of his pack and would not stop until she was brought to justice.

Vorilye || Mackenzie Valley Brute || Eight Years Old
The demeanor of the little red femme was very sullen and pathetic. The Mexican femme she’d chased down had taken off. Shayde had lost sight of her in the blink of an eye, though she followed the femme’s scent as far as the territory’s edge. With an irritated growl, she’d given up the chase, turning and heading back for Vorilye.
Only to find that he was no longer present.
Not that she wasn’t slightly pleased by this. She had to report that she’d lost track of the femme. There was no doubt in her mind that he would be angry with her. Was she up for a chiding? No; especially not from the alpha brute. He liked violence. She wouldn’t put it past him to leave her inches from death, just for letting an intruder run free.
Shayde shuddered. She was following his faint scent deeper into the territory, to a place she hadn’t gotten to wander into yet. Perhaps she’d patrol the entire territory when she was finished speaking with the alpha. That way she would at least have some bearings. It would help when she needed to track the brute down too. Having to find him only on scent was simply irritating.
The alpha was alone when she arrived, but she still remained a short distance from him. He seemed deep in thought about something, and she didn’t want to disturb him. Especially not with news that she had failed. Another shudder wracked the femme’s body. She waited a moment. Then another. It didn’t seem the brute was coming out of his reverie. With a deep sigh, the femme crept towards him, keeping her head low.
“I’ve returned, alpha,” she muttered politely, stopping a few feet before the brute. She glanced into his eyes briefly before casting them to the ground at her paws. “The femme fled from the territory...” Only when it was too late did Shayde realize her mistake. She could have lied, telling the brute that she’d run the female out. Instead, she made her failure that more extreme. She winced, glancing into the brute’s eyes once again.

Vorilye did not even need to turn to sense the approach of his pack mate. Shayde had a particular way of walking, not to discount the scent that surrounded her, that alerted the brute to her arrival before he bothered to face the femme. He dipped his head in greeting to the femme, searching her eyes almost instantaneously for the results of her expedition. It did not even take as long as the femme verbally acknowledging her failure to catch the femme for the brute to know. He had always been skilled on reading wolves, and she had an air of disappointment around her. The alpha brute was not angry with her, but he could tell quite clearly that she was upset with herself.
The moment of hesitation after her spoken admission was tense; Vorilye nodded his head tersely. "I wanted her out of my territory. You achieved the end result, regardless of how it was administered," he grumbled roughly, turning back to the edge of the plateau and staring out across the way. He could see nearly his entire territory from up here, and if he rotated to look out the other direction, he would see the ocean for as far as was visible. It was remarkable, really, and the brute was calmed by the lovely view. His temper was starting to subside a bit, and in its place was an eerie sense of calm.
Perhaps this was merely the calm before the storm, but Vorilye had not felt such peace, even in a passing moment, in such a long time that it was a foreign feeling to the mackenzie valley wolf. His golden eyes fell on the femme before him; she was certainly an asset to the pack, and he did not want to lose that in her. He sighed, squinting his eyes as he faced Shayde once more.
"Femme, you think you have failed," the brute chuckled humorously, allowing that feeling to stew in her for a while. He may not have been inherently evil, but there was a darkness in the brute that just loved to watch others squirm for as long as he could get away with it. Shayde was a strong wolf though; he knew she would not allow him to break her the way he had with so many other wolves. It was for that reason, and that reason alone that he placed a certain sense of trust in her that he did not with any of the pack's other wolves.
Most of them were impulsive, careless, and a touch insane. While Vorilye was on the paranoid side, he was not crazy, and he was certainly not stupid. He was a born leader, and so long as there were those who would follow, he would stand before them. She is like her... he thought aimlessly. Shayde reminded him a bit of his old mate, though not enough so to make him hate Shayde. She was the complete opposite of Kallik, who had been so clingy, dependent, and needy toward him that it bolstered his ego merely to have someone who trusted and desired him so much without the same feelings being reciprocated. No, Shayde was a tough wolf, and that was why he was certain she would prove more useful than Ithilwen, or Kallik, ever had.
"You are bitter, proud, stubborn, and mighty," he started with a little scoff at the end. "You don't like to be dominated, yet you subject yourself to pack life. You hate to be under someone else's watchful eye, yet you allow me to order you, though I can see the distaste in your eyes. I can see everything." He smirked, hoping he could make the femme sweat some more. "You're no match for me, femme. Shayde, you are smaller, weaker, and less suited for battle." Maybe he could get her legitimately riled up with this line. He enjoyed angry femmes. It certainly made the foreplay better, in the end. He paused, staring straight into her eyes menacingly.
"... and that is why I'm making you my beta."

Vorilye || Mackenzie Valley Brute || Eight Years Old
The tension seemed to rise drastically after Shayde admitted her failure. It was so thick she actually squirmed and looked around, fighting the whimper longing to escape her throat. But when the alpha let her off the hook, she turned to him in surprise. That’s it? she thought, eyeing the black and gold brute warily. She’d been expecting fury, snarling, shouting, something. His nonchalance of her failure only made the matter worse. He was merely waiting for her to let down her guard before he exploded.
Shayde snorted lightly, pinning her ears. If he thinks he’s got one up on me, he’s got another thing coming... She decided to play along with his little game, and allowed herself a little sigh of relief. She settled into a seated position a fair distance to his side, looking out over the plateau as he did. And then, she forgot all about acting calm.
The sight before her was nothing she’d ever seen in her days on Anikira. The land seemed to stretch out in front of the femme, offering a view of all that was waiting for her. She stared out in wonder before turning to the brute beside her. Why had he waited so long to conquer this beautiful land? It was merely waiting there for some wolf to simply claim it! Just as she opened her mouth to ask, he cut her off with a rather rude, chuckled comment. She pinned her ears, turning from him. “Of course I believe that,” she growled. “Any with enough sense would feel the same.”
Shayde risked a quick glance at the brute before focusing solely on the expanse of land seemingly within her reach. “If you wish to scold me, Alpha, would you just get it over with already? I am not your prey and will therefore not allow you to play with me before you end it.” She refused to look at the brute after that, feeling rather foolish having said such a thing out loud. It had sounded much more brilliant in her head.
The great brute spoke up again, this time sounding as if he were attempting a compliment. To Shayde, however, it sounded more like he was insulting her. She flattened her ears again, eyes narrowing sharply as she turned back to the alpha. With every word, the fur on the back of her neck stood higher. It was as if he had the ability to read her mind. She did hate being dominated; she did hate being ordered around. Was she truly that transparent? Then, the brute had the courage to say she wasn’t suited for battle. It was the last straw. The femme sprang to her feet with a fierce snarl, rushing towards the brute. She knew he was right; he was far larger than she and she didn’t doubt his strength; yet she still attempted to stare him down.
“If I’m so proud and mighty and stubborn, why did you allow me to join your pack? If you know how I dislike following orders and being part of such a thing as a pack, why even consider me? Why confide in me your plans for conquering this land?” She gestured to the view with a jerk of her head. “Is this merely a game to you?” The very thought made the femme’s blood boil, and she let out a fierce growl. “Am I merely a plaything?”
Her anger diffused almost immediately when the brute stared back at her, malice prominent in his gold orbs. She’d made a big mistake. Before she could back down and attempt to apologize, the brute spoke up. Any anger left was replaced with stunned surprise. She stared at him, ears ringing with his comment. Beta? Me? She took a few steps back, shaking her head rigorously. “I must be going insane...I thought you just said...you were making me your beta?” Simply saying the word was enough to make Shayde laugh. It was foolish to believe he honestly wanted a femme like her at his beck and call. Not that she wasn’t already. Becoming his beta would mean she was promoted. No. That was completely and utterly foolish.

Where was she? Angel raised her head lethargically and blinked at her surroundings. She was lying at the base of a sand dune, luckily in its shadow. Sand stretched out as far as she could see, and the bright blue expanse overhead was unbroken. One thing was certain – she was not in Descai territory.
Her body protested as she tried to lift herself to her feet, and she fell back to the sand with a scared whine. How had she gotten into such a dreadful state? And what was she doing out here in the middle of nowhere? As hard as she tried, she just simply couldn’t remember.
Even though she was in the shadow of the dune, the merciless heat was still enough to remind her that tundra wolves did not belong in the desert, and she’d better get out of here quick if she wanted to live. Ignoring the sharp pain that pulled at her aching limbs, she dragged herself to her paws and gave herself a quick shake to get rid of the sand that had accumulated in her thick fur.
The scrawny white she wolf clambered up the side of the dune, wincing every time her pads touched the burning sands. From her vantage point she saw that a river wound its way through the desert not too far away, and with relief spotted the familiar ridge of Ryn-Eldbel in the distance. Angel yipped in delight and immediately set off at a canter towards her pack’s territory, back to her usual happy self.
It was tremendous fun running up and down the dunes, but unfortunately her body could not keep up with her enthusiasm, and at about halfway she was forced to stop. Her tongue lolled right out of her mouth as her body tried to cool her down, but this left her with a parched throat and an incredible thirst.
She remembered that she was still fairly close to the river, so she turned and trotted over to get a drink. It was surprisingly hard to find a safe place to drink at the shore of the rushing river, but she eventually found a rock where she could perch and lap at the lovely cool water.
When she had drunk her fill, she resumed her journey with renewed energy. She almost flew across the landscape, and soon she had closed the remaining distance and was amongst the dark gloomy trees of her home. She simply strolled along in the nice cool shade for a while, letting herself cool down from the exertion, until she heard voices coming from up ahead. She broke into a run again and burst in upon the pair, heedless of the atmosphere between them or her own messy unkempt fur and general scrawniness.
“Alpha! Shayde!” Angel bounded around the two wolves with unconstrained joy. Her tail was wagging so fast that she had trouble keeping her balance, and she fell over once or twice. She was so glad to be home!
Watching Shayde squirm was quickly becoming one of the alpha brute's favorite past times. The way she shifted uncomfortably, grew impatient with him, and looked as if she were going to fly at him to tear out his throat was simply amusing to the alpha. He enjoyed tugging at her insecurities, and it was obvious that he had hit quite a few of them on the head. After all, he was certainly much more suited to be in leadership than her; that much was apparent merely because of his ability to keep a level head. Watching the femme as he toyed with her emotions led him to believe that she did not have what it took to lead a pack.
But at the same time, the mackenzie valley brute saw heart in her. While she hated to be ordered around, she still acquiesced and did as he asked. She was stubborn and unpleasant most of the time, but then again, so was he. She was a formidable companion for him, and Vorilye was certain that she could keep an additional perspective that he himself could not always see in the nearby line of sight. He did not doubt for one second that she was the only wolf currently in the pack that had the potential to take over should anything ever happen to him. That notion was craziness, but it was also foolish of the brute not to cover all his tracks. Without a successor or beta, the pack would fall into nothingness in the event he was... incapacitated.
Vorilye allowed a few moments for his news to sink in, and he watched the flurry of activity that was the small femme before him. He even so much as let out a hearty chuckle, thoroughly entertained by her ramblings and discomfort.
"My dear, the whole world is a plaything to me," he announced with a smirk. "You just so happen to be one of the more useful toys in my toy box." The brute may have been cynical and rude, but that was the closest thing Shayde would get to a compliment at this point. He was still too injured, angry, and threatened by the Kalllik matter to allow anyone else to really get to know him. Perhaps in time he could trust the femme more, but for now he would keep her at a paw's length. He was wise enough to realize that not the entire world was on his side, particularly after the threat that he had issued to Akihra and her pack should they not return Kallik to Descai.
The brute's ears flattened against his head as the sound of an approaching wolf flooded his senses. There were very few wolves that could evoke such a displeased reaction from their mere appearance, and Angel was one of them. She was rambunctious, uncoordinated, and the closest thing to bipolar that the brute had ever met. In not so many words, she made him uncomfortable, mostly due to the fact that he could not predict her behavior.
"Angel, where have you been?" the brute snapped impatiently, his gaze falling flat on her. He was under assumption that she had just left the pack; while he could understand that a lot of people could not handle his style of leadership, she was so hard to read that Vorilye could not decode exactly what she thought of him. Other than her initial attempts to seduce him, she had not shown much interest in him personally. It partially intrigued the brute, but at the same time he was far too confused by the obnoxious little white female to ever want to act on his desires.
"And where is Meridian?" he threw yet another question at the femme, expecting the answers to come immediately though they did not. Angel looked as if she were about to throw herself off the edge of the plateau with the rate her tail was wagging, and the brute mentally willed her body to still. Watching her was giving Vorilye a headache; how could one wolf have so much energy in such a small body? It would make sense for someone his size. After all, there was plenty of spirit and pep inside him. He just chose to push it all away to prevent the hurt that comes with trust...

Should she be surprised or thoroughly insulted that the alpha brute enjoyed toying with her? Shayde couldn’t decide. If it meant that she was going to be part of the pack for some time, she supposed she could put up with it. For a little while, anyway.
The red femme let out a little irritated snort before backing from the brute slightly. He could read her so easily, far more than any wolf she’d ever met before. It vexed her. She’d always been able to control her emotions in most situations. But this brute could get a rise out of her just by poking at her weak points, pieces of her that she tried very hard to keep hidden. Was it really worth the effort any longer? It would certainly entertain the brute to no end, but she wasn’t up to granting him that amusement. With a short sigh, she lay near him, crossing her front paws as she pinned her ears.
“I’m glad I can be of some use to you,” she muttered, not bothering to mask the sarcasm. Even if she had, she doubted he’d miss it. “And if you truly wish me to be your beta, then I guess I would be honored. There isn’t much to be done with the pack in shambles, however.” She glanced at the brute, only pausing a second to wonder what he’d think of her bluntness. She was his beta. Delivering bad news would likely be a common occurrence. If he was bothered by such an obvious detail, he certainly wasn’t the wolf she believed him to be (and he had yet to disappoint her in that department).
Shayde fell silent. She placed her head on her paws, watching the brute intently. He still hadn’t bothered to give his name. She felt as if she ought to be bothered by the fact, as he knew her name, but she merely wondered why he was keeping it secret. But was he? Maybe the brute simply didn’t have a name. The thought brought a smile to Shayde’s lips. A nameless wolf was something to fear, and it suited the brute well. For now, the femme would honor his desire to keep his name to himself (if he had one of course).
Just as she was getting used to the silence between herself and the alpha, that bubbly femme from before had bounced on up the plateau. Shayde hadn’t seen hide nor hair of the femme since they’d been acquainted. The red femme frowned as she watched the white femme bounce around like a young pup greeting the wolf responsible for feeding her. There was much she could say to the female, but with a glance to the alpha, she decided to prove just how worthy of his promotion she was. Shayde rose to her feet, facing the femme. “Calm down...” She trailed off, trying to remember the femme’s name. Before she could bring it to mind, the brute snapped at the peppy little femme.
Shayde frowned, turning to the side. He’d beaten her to the punch. If only she’d remembered the silly femme’s name. Angel. She committed it to memory, muttering it under her breath as many times as she could. White femme, Angel. The brute asked the femme another question, one that caught Shayde’s focus. Meridian was not a name she’d yet heard. So there were other wolves still within the pack. She turned her gaze back to the white femme, waiting silently for the answers the femme would have.

She was so so glad to see them again! Her tail continued to wag at top speed, and the smile on her face was almost stretched from ear to ear. She didn’t mind that they weren’t quite as enthusiastic to see her – perhaps they were really happy inside but just not the kind of wolves who liked to show it. She didn’t understand why wolves would want to keep their emotions bottled up inside themselves. It must be so strange, not being able to express oneself.
“Yes, ma’am!” Angel replied overly enthusiastically to Shayde’s command, but thankfully stopped her bouncing. She sat down and closed her eyes, taking on a look of serene grace, which was somewhat spoiled by her loud ‘zen’ breathing.
“Ohhh… no, I don’t know where she is. I haven’t seen her in ages” Angel’s face fell momentarily into a look of pure sadness. She missed Meridian. Even though the two hadn’t known each other very well, it felt as though they had been the best of friends (to Angel, at least).
She had soon forgotten about the other white femme, however, as she remembered that she still hadn’t answered her alpha’s other question. “I don’t know where I’ve been. It was so weird! I woke up in the middle of nowhere - a desert, would you believe?! - and I couldn’t remember anything that happened before! Don’t you think that’s weird? I do! But you know what’s even weirder? It’s happened to me before! Do you think there might be something wrong with me? Ha! That would be weird!”
Angel had always been one for rambling, when even a simple ‘I don’t know’ would have sufficed. Her parents had never even attempted to get her out of her more annoying habits because they were afraid of what would happen if they upset their daughter. In a way their approach had been good, because the pack had lived without incident for most of Angel’s life, but here on Anikira none knew of her condition and so didn’t know how to treat her. Perhaps that was why she found herself with only a handful of memories to account for the past few years.
