The alpha brute finally made his way back to the dens, curious to see just who was milling about in anticipation of their meeting. Vorilye intended to make some changes, and he needed everyone present in order to do so. The alpha was sick and tired of himself and Shayde handling all the responsibility for the pack, and it was past time for the wolves to step up and take some work on their own shoulders. They needed to earn their keep in order for Vorilye to believe that it was useful for him to keep them around.
He needed some dedicated hunters. Vorilye also needed someone to mentor Tike; though that wolf would end up being equally a babysitter and shadow for his son. He knew in his heart that the black and gold youngster would be irritated with him for doing it, but Tike needed instruction and supervision. He was not going to take chances with his remaining son, and that was all there was to it. There needed to be some structure to Descai. Additionally, he needed some wolves to go survey Kamari. With the death of the alphess, he technically gained control of the territory. He wanted some of the pack to search through the territory and ensure there were not any lurkers in his newly acquired territory.
But did he really trust anyone well enough to take responsibility from himself and place it upon them? After all, these wolves held very little, if any, of the alpha's respect. He was frustrated with being near them most of the time, particularly Angel. Yet no matter what, the femme stuck around. He could not figure out why she had not taken off yet; on top of that, she seemed to bounce back and forth so frequently that he was not sure she did not have some type of mental problems. Vorilye sighed; this was going to be more difficult than he originally intended.
As he approached the mines, he noticed a few wolves wandering about, and he was fairly certain Noella had remained inside the mines, but he would cover his bases. The alpha brute threw his head back and called out to his pack, the howl echoing all throughout Acerbus, summoning the pack back to the dens. He could not start without them there because what he had to say would affect every one of them. Vorilye wanted to see what he had to work with, and if there was anyone he believed would not be useful in some way... Well, they would make great practice for his newly appointed warriors and hunters. It would be an all around win for the pack.
Hopefully, it would not come to that. Vorilye had expressed extreme scrutiny in allowing most of the wolves into his pack. They at least had the common sense to exhibit proper etiquette in their introduction to the pack. Even if they were not particularly helpful, that alone gave them a leg up over the loners who wandered into his territory unannounced. The alpha seated himself at the mouth of the dens, awaiting everyone's arrival.

Angel wandered through the woods of Lleingas, head held head high to embrace the swirling fog. It was so lovely and cool, sparkling her thick fur with tiny droplets of dew. Despite it being daytime, little light managed to penetrate the dense canopy overhead and nothing but darkness and the outlines of trees could be seen in any direction. Some might find this forest spooky, but for the white wolf that wandered there today it was simply a forest. She was innocent to the terrors that could come in the dark, having never before experienced anything of the sort (at least nothing that she could remember).
The world Angel knew had no evil in it – evil was just for stories, and even then she’d never been told anything that was very frightening. She had never truly known emotions either. Every time she felt intense anger or sadness she lost control and could never remember anything afterwards. She didn’t even know she had the condition; her parents had made sure to keep it a secret from her. But the result wasn’t too bad. She had just ended up being a happy cheerful femme who could see the good in everyone and everything. It really was a pity that no one seemed to like her, and she still hadn’t met that handsome brute of her dreams who would come down from heaven and sweep her off her paws. But right now nothing could dampen her spirits and she was sure that everything would turn out perfectly in time.
A strong howl reached Angel's ears and they perked up immediately, an excited smile already spreading on her face. It was a request from the alpha for her and the others to come to him so that they could all have a meeting, something that she couldn’t remember happening in all her time in the Descai pack. The white wolf bounded through the trees, following the quickest route back to the dens. She had been living in this territory for a long time now and she knew it like the back of her paw.
When she arrived at the dens her tail was wagging cheerily behind her and there was an obvious bounce in her step. What had he called them here for? Angel planted her rump down a short distance away from the large black and gold brute and tried to keep still, perhaps aware that this wasn’t the time to be bouncing around in joy. She would do anything to please her alpha.
Vorilye had been right to assume that Noella was within the dens. Ever since Aludra had been kind enough to help her get home, she had not been one to venture out much. Usually she only left to get herself a drink from the lake and maybe try and catch a quick meal. Descai, it seemed, was not well stocked with hunters. Sometimes meat was brought back but there were quite a few wolves living here and rarely did it seem enough. Worse off her own skills were rather subpar. She could catch small things, rabbits and the like, provided she was quick on her paws. Beyond that, however, her emaciated state and general lack of education in the ways of a proper wolf had left her to be little to no help.
On the bright side, she was actually starting to look a lot better. Her coat was no longer bogged down with sea water and she had bathed enough that she was finally smelling like herself again (or as much like herself as the pack scent would allow). Though she still had not spoken a word, not even her name crossing her lips, her recovery had been marked. Noella was finally starting to look and feel healthy again. How long had it been since her body had felt like something to be proud of? Too long.
Slowly but surely she padded her way towards the meeting place, stride much stronger than it had once been. She could carry herself and that alone made a marked difference in her posture. Though her head was barely raised above her shoulders and her tail remained tucked and submissive, she no longer seemed so pathetic, so helpless. She was actually starting to look like she belonged here. And as she sat down, several feet from the alpha and the only other wolf to show up thus far, she did not feel so out of place nor unwelcome. She belonged here. And with a slight dip of her head to the alpha in greeting, she actually felt content for once.
Tike had been emerged deeply in the mines when he had heard his father's voice booming through the air. The sound bouncing around the walls of the dens made the noise much louder and it made Tike wince and cover his ears until the noise had gone.
When it had vanished from any chance of hearing it, Tike began to travel back to the mouth. He hoped that he had not gotten lost. He hadn't been back in this part of the dens very much, if at all. It was very dark inside of these mines and following one's own scent was more difficult than one would imagine.
He knew that he was getting closer when he had seen the colorful femme with the pretty eyes get up and pad onward. It was also a good sign that he had been going in the right direction. Thank Tor. Though he was a good distance behind her. The light at the end of this long and dark journey was getting closer and closer. He couldn't say that he was particularly excited for whatever this was. Tike had never been summoned to anything like this in his entire 7 months of life. It would be another adventure he guessed.
When his black pelt emerged from the safety of the dens, his father as well as Angel and the colorful fae were already out here. Tike strutted out of the dens with a confident aura about him. Tike wasn't trying to dominate any of these adults but he wasn't about to cower and quiver like a piece of meat preparing to be slaughtered. He nodded to his father before taking a seat next to the colorful fae. He really didn't want to sit next to Angel. She was friendly and she seemed like a nice wolf but the more time Tike spent with her, the more annoying she had gotten.
It had taken the red beta far more time to...take care of Taq than she had originally thought it would. For one, getting her hormones down to a controllable level was difficult. She’d never felt that strongly towards another before... No, she hissed at herself, I felt nothing toward Vorilye. It was instinct. Instinct. Shayde had been telling herself the same thing over and over since she began digging a hole to put Taq’s body into. She didn’t want to believe she felt something towards the alpha brute. He was her alpha, nothing more. Adding feelings to the mix would just make it complicated and awkward.
After ensuring the body was completely covered, Shayde took a short breather, sitting on her haunches panting heavily. Taq had been a fairly large wolf for one so young. And his dead-weight was enough to give the little femme an actual workout. Her red-brown pelt was clumped with dirt, and she had a brief desire to cleanse herself in the lake. Just as she rose to her feet to do so, she heard Vorilye’s booming howl echo through the land. She sighed deeply, staring longingly at the dark water. Despite the rumors about a monster in its depths, all she wanted was a quick rinse. But Vorilye’s call had seemed urgent.
A sudden realization crossed the femme’s mind. “Gather up the pack. I need to meet with them all.” Vorilye had given her orders. And yet she’d spent all her time dealing with Taq’s body. “Damn it!” Abandoning her desire to bathe, Shayde took off at a flat run to the mines. He was going to scold her. In front of the entire pack, she was going to get scolded. This was sure to be a very bad meeting.
As she grew nearer the mines, another thought crossed Shayde’s mind. What would the others say upon her arrival? It was clear that Vorilye had claimed her—his scent almost dominated her own. Would they assume he had taken her as his mate? Or worse, would they assume she’d somehow manipulated him? She let out a growl. Perhaps she should have rinsed off in the lake after all. It may not have gotten rid of his scent entirely, but at least it wouldn’t be so blatantly obvious. Screw it. If anyone said a word, she’d just ignore them.
Shayde was the last to arrive at the little meeting, panting slightly as she trotted to the entrance of the mines. Vorilye was perched in front of the entrance, and the others were seated around him. The beta froze for a moment, wondering where she was supposed to sit in these situations. There was no chance in hell she was going to sit beside either of the femmes present—Angel annoyed her beyond sane thought, and she didn’t know the drowned femme well enough to risk conversation. She could probably sit beside Vorilye without causing a ruckus, but she knew that only the alphess was to sit directly beside him. With a confident look, Shayde approached the group, keeping her eyes on the ground to avoid eye contact with Vorilye. She didn’t want to get scolded right away. The beta eventually seated herself between Angel and the drowned femme, directly across from Vorilye. It was only after she was sitting did she raise her eyes from the ground.

As the brute watched, the pack emerged from the dens and the surrounding areas. Angel, Noella, Tike, and finally Shayde approached. There was no sign of the white brute he had accepted back with Kallik, but Amyntas had been so sparse as of late that he was not surprised that the brute did not make an appearance. He would not be a member of the pack much longer at this rate. The alpha had allowed him plenty of time to mourn the death of his... friend. Beyond that, Vorilye had no sympathy for him. He had shirked his duties as a member of the pack, and when he saw the brute next he would be sure to make that well known.
Vorilye noticed the lack of eye contact from his beta, yet he shrugged it off without a care. He would deal with her later if he saw fit, and there was no need to make a spectacle out of anyone right now. This was about setting up a better hierarchy for Descai. They needed assigned roles, or their pack was going to collapse. The food supply had been scarce as of late, and that needed to be remedied. They would need to take the time to organize hunts and bring back prey to feed the pack. He was tired of having to do all the work between himself and Shayde.
"You all finally made it," the brute greeted them with a bit of a smirk. There was something unsettling about him at the moment, yet he could not even pinpoint it himself. "It's about time I saw all of you in one place. It has been far too long. Now, what do we see about Descai that is missing?" The brute raised his brow in suspense, waiting to see if anyone would answer his question. Yet he waited only a couple of seconds between his question and continuing on with the answer.
"There is no hierarchy apart from myself and Shayde. And while I love to say that you are all subordinate to the two of us, there needs to be some organization here." The brute reared up, stomping his paws against the dirt, watching as the dust swirled up around him. "It's about time that you all start taking responsibility in this pack. I am tired of Shayde and myself handling every little detail while you lot mill around aimlessly," he snapped, his golden eyes flashing with irritation. "I cannot remember the last time one of you brought a kill back for the pack. Shayde and I handle all of the patrols. That will not do any longer."
His eyes fell first on the drowned femme. She had yet to indicate her name, yet she never left, so he assumed she planned to stick around the pack. "You there. I don't know much of what you're good for, since you never bother to say a word," he spat out with frustration. He hated not being able to address the members of his pack by name, even though most of them were still in the dark as to his. "You can make yourself useful as a hunter for the pack. I don't care what you catch, so long as you catch something" he emphasized, staring her down. "Are we clear?"
His gaze fell next to Angel, a bit of turmoil raging inside him. It was difficult for Vorilye to trust the femme, based solely on her mood swings and inability to remain near the pack. Yet she had not run off yet, so he would have to trust that she was somewhat loyal to Descai. "Angel, you will join... Her as a hunter. The two of you need to work together, do I make myself clear?" He gave her the stink eye, though it likely came across more comical than serious.
Finally, Vorilye gazed at his remaining on. "Tike, you and I are going to need to do some work together. Though you are not yet old enough to take a rank, we will train together, and one day you will be my warrior." A slight smile tipped at the corners of the alpha's mouth, pleased that he had at least one offspring that opted to remain with the pack. His dismissal of Shayde's presence was not completely intentional, but the brute did not make any motions to acknowledge her there other than his mentions of her in patrols. "And you will also accompany Shayde on her patrols. Once you are of age, I will entrust you to do patrols on your own, or with one other individual."

Angel waited patiently as the others arrived; first the unnamed she-wolf who’d been washed ashore, then the younger copy of Vorilye – was Tike his name? – and finally Shayde, the beta. Was that all? Where was Vorilye’s other son? And what about Kallik and that handsome white brute who’d been with her? Surely they couldn’t have just left without saying goodbye? But Vorilye didn’t seem to be expecting them to arrive and had already launched into a little speech about how unorganised the pack was. Angel didn’t think the current arrangements were that bad really – she liked lazing around on top of Ryn-Eldbel. Besides, she always had enough food to keep her belly full and she wasn’t in any danger here. It was the perfect life, and nothing was missing but a mate and pups.
But then the alpha mentioned something about taking responsibility, and that probably meant that ranks were going to be given out. The white female visibly perked up at that and listened eagerly, waiting for the moment when Vorilye would turn to her and give her a rank in the pack. It would be so exciting to have a rank, a duty to perform, to make her family proud. In her whole life she had never been trusted with something so big before!
When the alpha finally did turn to her she shifted sheepishly under his gaze but couldn’t stop the giggle from slipping past her lips. He did look hilariously funny glaring at her like that, as she knew he wasn’t really being serious. “Yes sir!” Angel beamed, and her tail gave a few soft thumps on the ground behind her. The position of hunter would do her just fine – of course she wasn’t the best in the world but she was decent, and had survived on her own for over a year. What she wasn’t used to was hunting with others, but even though this was only the first time she’d seen the other female fully conscious she was confident that they would be great as a hunting team.
Pale blue eyes now sought out those of her new colleague. “Hi there, I’m Angel. What’s your name?” If she was going to be working with this female there could be no harm in getting to know her a little, even if they were in the middle of a meeting.
The others did not waste time in showing up as well and it was not long before one of the young black and gold brutes that had helped drag her to the dens settled on one side of her and the beta (Shayde, the alpha had called) sat down on the other. And that was the pack, the mighty alpha, a young boy who looked just like his father, the happy female she had met the day she washed up, and the beta that was smelling a little too much like the alpha right now. Confused, Noella glanced between each of her packmates in turn, wondering if there was something she was missing. In truth she knew pretty much nothing about any of them, having kept mostly to herself. It wasn't like she could question the others either, her voice locked away in some small part of her mind and having no desire to be set free.
Ah well, whatever. There was no doubt she would hear about whatever it was in due time. Noella had a habit of being neither seen nor heard and, with her lack of voice, it made her an idea source for keeping information. She had a bit of a habit for eavesdropping (mostly because it was sometimes the only way she was comfortable with interaction with others). It wasn't like it would hurt anyone though. After all, she could not repeat the secrets she heard nor did she really have the desire to.
The interruption of the alpha's thoughts pulled her from her musings and she looked up, not enough to be disrespectful but just enough to show she was listening while still showing submission. His question, though barely given enough time for thought, did make her wonder what was already wrong. She couldn't voice a guess if she wanted to though and, as such, she let out an almost imperceptible whimper and waited for the intimidating male to continue.
It wasn't like she had to wait long to get the answer. Ranks. It seemed the pack was lacking ranks and not just herself. The idea of having a rank was one foreign to her. Noella had always been a subordinate at best. And, had her birth pack been privy to the fact that she still lived, there was no doubt about it that she would have been slotted as the omega simply for having been born. To have an actual rank though? To be trusted with some form of power and duty? Noella wasn't sure how to react to the idea. She didn't even know what she would be good at.
And then the alpha's attention was on her and she whined again, shrinking upon herself and hanging her head like a child in trouble. Briefly she parted her jaws, trying to force out even a syllable of her name for fear of facing disapproval. No sound would come though, and it seemed the alpha had no patience to wait for introductions. Instead he assigned her the rank of hunter, just like that. Nodding twice, Noella let out a squeak of consent and let out the breath she had been holding. A hunter. She supposed out of all the choices, it was the safest one. Having entered the lands half dead that had shown she would not be a fitting warrior and she knew nothing about plant life. At least with hunting she knew enough to have kept herself alive. With some guidance she could probably become proficient.
Of course that meant Angel would end up taking lead on most every hunt they went on together. And, judging by the strange way the alpha was looking at the white femme, Noella wasn't sure if that would be a good thing or not. Angel seemed fine with the idea though, so that was a good sign, right? She also seemed friendly enough (or too friendly), and Noella let her tail give a small wag at the other's approach. At least until the other tundra asked her name...
Whatever else Vorilye had to say was lost on the aqua-eyed female, though it did not concern her anyway so it was not a big deal. Instead she opened her mouth again, trying to force out a sound. 'Noella... Noella,' she willed, hoping maybe she could send the message through telepathically. But alas it was no use. The word would not come. After a moment she hung her head, shamed. What if they grew angry with her for not sharing her name? Or worse, what if they tried to give her a new one?
Though she did not hear it often, her given name was something she liked and she did not wish to change it. Which is why she gave one last attempt, lifting a paw to point at herself and shaking her head back and forth in a "No." Several times she attempted to mouth her name, "Noella... Noellla." But if they could not get the whole thing, perhaps the first syllable would do? She could live with being called "Noe." The question was, would her pack mates be smart enough to figure that out?
When the red beta finally arrived, her smell was different. She smelled like, his father? Had the two like...cuddled or something after he left? If that was the case, they could have just asked for a little privacy. Either way, Shayde sat on the opposite side of the colorful fae who had yet to name herself. Did she not want to sit by him? If she was trying to hide the scent it wasn't working. Every wolf here that had a decent nose could smell her.
It was difficult to look at his father after their meeting with Kyra. Something was just different now. Vorilye had been so, calloused and cold to his sister. Like he didn't care about her anymore when just a few seconds earlier he was like putty in her paws. Could his father's opinion really be changed so quickly? If so, Tike could be in trouble. He had never been the pup to have perfect behavior. He was bound to screw up at some point.
Tike was not surprised when Amyntas didn't show up for this meeting. He had left a while ago though he had lost count of the days. He seemed frantic about it though he wasn't entirely sure if he had left just yet. The young black and gold brute couldn't say that he would miss him. That white wolf would only cause him more pain. Even thinking about him made Tike want to rip his throat out. He had to have played a part in his mother's suicide. Why on earth would she have done it otherwise? Maybe she did it because her favorite son died. Tike couldn't look anyone in the eyes. His eyes burned the ground like he was trying to set fire to it. He was angry. He saw how it was. His mother threw herself off a cliff for Taqqiq but couldn't spare ten minutes out of her day to talk to him? That bitch. It may have sounded horrible but if that was the reason that Kallik threw herself off a cliff then, Tike was glad that she was dead. Every fiber of his being hated her. She had been the start of this. If she had only payed half the attention to him that she payed to Taqqiq, maybe their family wouldn't be so messed up. If she had not messed around with other males then maybe she could have stayed here and his sisters and Taqqiq wouldn't be dead and maybe Kyra would be here too. This was her fault.
As Vorilye began to speak, Tike was brought back into reality from his little space of rage. He was still unhappy but he was no longer trying to set anything on fire with his eyes. Tike payed attention as his father gave out ranks and different duties to the wolves here. Angel was supposed to be training..Noe? Tike looked over with a puzzled look on his face. You name is..Noe? Tike's voice was point-blank and very blunt. It was probably the weirdest name he had ever heard. It was puzzling why anyone would name their child "Noe." To each their own he guessed.
Vorilye continued and said that he would be working with him and eventually become his warrior. Well, he couldn't hate him that much, could he? He was willing to train him as a warrior. That was pretty good if Tike could say so himself. He smiled a little bit, happy that his father trusted him with at least something. Tike had wanted nothing more than to do something for the pack ever since he had gotten here and now he had the opportunity. He would also be accompanying Shayde with her boarder patrols. Maybe this wasn't such a bad day after all. At least he didn't get stuck with Angel. Now that would have been miserable. Yes, Sir. Tike's voice held a twinkle of happiness and some relief as he spoke to his father. Granted he was still upset with Amyntas and Kallik but at least Kyra loved him and Vorilye cared enough about him to offer him a future rank.
When Vorilye didn’t begin barking at her for her incompetency, Shayde tensed. He was waiting for the opportune moment, when all were waiting for him to speak with baited breath. And when that moment came, he merely greeted them all. It was no different from any other greeting he offered, though there was an unsettling air about him that Shayde herself had never felt before. But he wasn’t ostracizing her. Maybe he wasn’t angry? Scoffing lightly at the thought, the beta finally brought her eyes up. They met Vorilye’s for a fraction of a second before he scanned the faces of the other members before him. He spoke in his usual mysterious tone, trying to get the others more excited. Shayde was quite used to this by now and sat patiently, waiting for whatever it was he had to say.
Still, his irritation surprised her a bit. The pack was disorganized, any could see it. In fact, Shayde herself had pointed it out when it had only been herself and Angel beneath Vorilye. But back then, the pack hadn’t needed much organization. Vorilye was alpha, Shayde had been appointed beta, and Angel was the only remaining subordinate. Now, however, there were three others in the pack. No... Two. Shayde’s eyes scanned the area for the white brute from before. Vorilye had begun the meeting without waiting for the other brute. Did something happen to him? Had Vorilye killed him? Shayde let out a sigh of disappointment. She had wanted to see that blood bath more than anything.
Vorilye continued, granting each of the members a rank. He turned to the drowned femme first, eyes smoldering. The drowned femme grew extremely timid under the alpha’s intense gaze, a common reaction. She still had yet to speak according to Vorilye’s words, and Shayde wondered how she would fare in a pack when she couldn’t speak. Or perhaps she could speak, but Vorilye was just scaring the speech out of her. Shayde thought back on the day she’d found the drowned femme. A large group had congregated that day as well. Maybe she was a one-on-one kind of talker. Still. Being a hunter meant she would have to step up her game a little.
Angel was also granted the hunter position, one she happily accepted in her typical, bubbly attitude. Shayde’s hackles rose out of irritation, but she kept a lid on her annoyance, eyes locked on Vorilye. At Angel’s question—which was a little out of place, given they were in the middle of a meeting—Shayde glanced at the femme at her side. She was clearly trying to speak, but no words were forming. She kept shaking her head, as if to say no. No what? Shayde lost interest pretty quickly, up until Tike spoke. The femme’s name was No? That made little sense.
Finally, Vorilye finished speaking, assigning Tike a future role in fighting. Not once did the alpha brute acknowledge her presence aside from mentioning her name once or twice. She hardly cared. This meeting was to organize the pack better. She had a rank, and had done everything he’d ever asked her to do (aside from gathering the pack for the meeting). This meeting was for them. But because it was a pack meeting, she had to attend. Not that she would have missed it anyway. Though the assigning of ranks was Vorilye’s responsibility, Shayde needed to know where the others stood in the pack hierarchy. She was his beta after all.

As everyone oh so graciously accepted their positions in the pack, Vorilye's mind wandered elsewhere. He had managed to block it for this long, but the thoughts of his absent daughter were creeping back into the forefront of his mind. How long could he deny that this had been his fault? He had grossly misinterpreted her and driven her away. It was something he needed to fix, and he needed to do it soon. The alpha sighed as all the fight left him, though he kept face for the remainder of the pack. Ignoring the remainder of the wolves, he approached Shayde.
"Two things. You need to bathe for one," he snapped, irritated that she would return to a pack gathering absolutely covered in his scent. True, the scents of Tike and even Taqqiq's dead body were mixed in as well, but his was overpowering that of both his sons. "Second, watch over the pack. You have the power to grant entry to other wolves who enter the territory. Remember that. I do not know how long I will be gone, but I will return." All of this was spoken in a rushed, hushed tone so that, in the commotion around them, Shayde was the only one who would hear. "I need to go scout out the new lands. Keep Tike with you or send him after me, whichever you decide. But I want to do this on my own," he snapped, ensuring that she would get the point that he did not want her around him right now. It was nothing personal against her, and she was still his second-in-command, but he had family matters to sort out that the intrusion of an outsider may not necessarily be welcomed.
With everything out of the way, the alpha scanned over his pack. They were disorganized and motley, but they would do for now. Vorilye needed to find Amyntas and figure out what he had been up to. It was not particularly smiled upon to miss a mandatory pack meeting, and he wanted to be sure that he got his point across that such behavior would not be acceptable. He needed to blow off some steam, and likely the brute would be the target of his anger.
