He called out stumbling after the mysterious phantom. His voice was gruff and filled with countless emotions. A high root materialized out of nowhere tripping Rovan sending the wolf flying. Rovan skid to a halt with his nose buried beneath a pile of leaves.A lone wolf stood at the boarder of Acerbus. His forest green eyes peered into the dense fog shrouding mysteries and secrets. Róvanfaer closed his eyes and took in a deep breath savoring the air. Letting the breath free his eyes opened slowly unfocused and distant. Memory upon memory flashed through his mind. Here Kodiak and Rovan tussled fighting for dominance during their puppy years. There Meridian and Rovan chased an imaginary bug that she had seen. Rovan didn’t question it at the time. As a puppy, it was all fun and games. The wolf’s ears twisted displaying his unease. The lingering scent of others wafted into his nostrils causing his lip to pull back over his teeth.
A second later Róvanfaer relaxed and returned to his previously contemplative and calm state. This was no longer his father’s lands. When his father disappeared, so did Rovan’s inheritance. Truthfully, the young male had no business being here. He certainly had no business doing what he was about to do, either, but that wasn’t going to stop him. The grey hued wolf stepped to his full height and paced forward slowly. Eyes on alert, ears focused frontward. It wouldn’t do him any good to get caught upon entrance. He was on a mission. Suddenly Róvanfaer stopped dead in his tracks. His right forepaw hovered over the new pack’s boundary line.
Green eyes focused in the distance on a slow lumbering figure. The shape was nothing more than a shadow in the already black darkness. Its form passed through the fog disappearing behind clouds only to appear seconds later. Was that…? Róvanfaer gasped with shock racing forward to follow the figure. “Wait! Wait!”
Frantically Rovan pushed himself to his paws coughing from the damp, decaying scent. “Arg!” he growled racing after the figure’s black tail. His heart beat wildly. His eyes flickered from side to side hoping to catch another glance of the shadow. Abruptly the trees ceased to surround him. The wolf’s rump dropped while his legs buckled causing him to slide across the ground. Róvanfaer panted heavily having run a greater distance than he had anticipated. Before him loomed a massive boulder. It took a moment for the sight to register within his mind. When it did, Rovan couldn’t help but laugh at the irony of the situation. “How fitting…” he whispered loudly in the silenced forest.
This is where it ended for Róvanfaer. It was here that the lost heir last went before leaving Anikira. To say good bye to… The shadowy figure appeared standing over Róvanfaer looking down upon him a magnificent aura surrounding the beast. It raised its muzzle releasing a silent howl in the lands. Róvanfaer sluggishly closed his eyes letting the sound flood into his mind from his locked memories. The howl was powerful, demanding, and familiar. With his muzzle agape, Rovan slowly opened his eyes. The beast was gone. The boulder and Rovan were the only things still standing in the clearing. Slowly, as if propelled by some unknown force, the wolf stepped forward leaping onto the rock. It took several moments but soon Róvanfaer came to his senses. The force had taken him directly where the other had stood.
A powerful feeling overcame Róvanfaer as he looked down at the spot where he had entered the clearing. Silver eyes blinked open from a dark spot within the boundary of the trees. As quickly as they appeared, they disappeared leaving Rovan feeling more alone than he had ever felt in his entire life. “Father…” he whispered longingly. Thoughts of what could have been swirled within his mind. In despair, the wolf forgot where he was throwing back his head releasing a prevailing howl of his own. As he brought his head down Róvanfaer’s body shook. His eyes closed tightly with a look of pure anguish plastered upon his face. “Father!” He bellowed collapsing where he stood on the rock. Shifting to his side, Rovan stared at the spot where the eyes had appeared. Nothing was there. It was the same as what Rovan felt inside. Nothing. He was void, empty. It wasn’t supposed to be this way. He was supposed to walk in, look around, and then leave to make his own life in Anikira. How could he do that now that he had been here? Rovan couldn’t leave his father’s land. It was every much his as it had been his father’s. It might not be his physically, but it was his in his soul.
Closing his eyes, Róvanfaer blacked out.[/blockquote][/blockquote]
