It had been a week since joining Amar, and Kyra was beginning to look much like her old self once again. After sleeping for nearly an entire day, the runt had thrown herself into Nyspoli’s Pool. Kiddo and the others had seemed a bit upset at the state of her pelt, and Nyspoli’s Pool wasn’t dangerous enough to carry her off as the Aughgar River had. The water had been cold, given that spring had only just rolled into Anikira, but Kyra had managed to suffer through it. She’d spent the remainder of that day lying on the sandy beach, drying her beautiful pelt.
Even the runt’s stride had returned to its original pep. Perhaps it was even full of pride. Kyra made sure to behave appropriately around Kiddo, as he seemed a little wary of her true intentions, but when she was alone, she was in full puppy mode. She was just over a year old, and probably should have been acting more like an adult, but with the way she was brought up, she never really got to be a puppy. Playing in the dens in Kamari had been so long ago...
Without even realizing it, Kyra had found herself standing in Kamari. The puzzled runt looked around, as if she had no idea how she’d gotten there. One minute, she was nestled in the Kinath Mountains, chasing a rabbit. Next, she was in Descai territory. With a snort, Kyra turned on her heels, shaking her head. Thinking about playing in the dens had gotten her all sentimental. Luckily, she wasn’t too deep in the territory, so she was fairly certain Kiddo wouldn’t grow angry. She was still young. If she had to explain to him, so be it. She would make him understand. Even if it meant telling him everything.
As the runt headed back to the Oriens, her ears swiveled all around, twitching at even the slightest sound. Kamari was once her home, and now belonged to her father. Even if she was his daughter, Kyra doubted the black and gold brute would allow her to wander freely through his lands. And should she run into any of the others of his pack... They would likely doubt the connection between herself and their alpha. While Kyra had similar features with her father, she was blind in one eye. The alpha brute would never have such a weak child. They would likely kill her on the spot, just for even suggesting she was related to the alpha.
Kyra paused, turning to look around. She was nearing the border, where there was an overlap of strong scents. For a brief moment, she believed she’d smelled her father. But why would he be here? Simply because she willed it? Kyra snorted lightly, turning back again. No. She had prayed he would find her during her time away before, and he never appeared. Even if she called for him, she doubted he would appear. After all, he gave little indication that he even cared about her. The emotional meeting they shared felt like eons ago, further away from her mind than playing with Tike and the others at the den. No. Her only place now was within Amar. And she really needed to get back before anyone realized she was gone.

Everything was going up in smoke. The alpha male had never felt such a heavy burden on his shoulders as he had lately. The pack was larger than Vorilye ever imagined, and he now had not three pups, but four to support. They needed a surplus of food, and yet none of the members of Descai seemed willing to step up to provide the sustenance that their beta needed in order to support her pups. Vorilye understood how difficult it had to be on Shayde's body to support not only her own pups, but now an additional pup that she found somewhere in her heart to accept. Vorilye held a new level of respect and admiration for the beta; she truly had a good heart, which was difficult to come by in his pack. Hell, even Vorilye felt as if his own heart had been tainted and blackened over time.
The black and golden alpha started realizing the errors of his ways months back, but it was only recently that he realized just how much his actions harmed and destroyed others. The brute often found himself thinking back to the conversation with his daughter and son. He had lashed out in pure anger, thoroughly convinced that the genetic washing machine his genes had managed to produce was trying to tear his only surviving son away from him. It was only after the smaller wolf fled that Vorilye was put in his place by Ryker. He had wholly misinterpreted her words, and he had paid the price. Vorilye still did not know his daughter's name, and while Zirena was the light of his world, he longed for the opportunity to fix things. He knew it was highly unlikely that he would ever get the chance, and that was the worst feeling the alpha male could ever imagine. It was devastating to know that he had failed her. He had driven her away when she came to him, and it was completely his fault for letting the past control the present once more.
Upon his return to Kamari on patrol, Vorilye was so engrossed in his thoughts of the young female that it seemed that he could almost smell her. The world was playing a cruel trick on him by doing so; a quiet whine slipped from the male's golden muzzle as his ears drooped pitifully. One who observed the beastly brute would not have seen a strong alpha, but rather a dilapidated, age-destroyed male with the weight of the world pressing him from every angle. How could he hope to continue to lead his pack in this condition? He needed reprieve, and yet it never came. His foolishness continued to cause problems for Descai, and yet he could not bring himself to accept it. He would have to repair the broken parts of the pack and bring it back up, yet the strain from the job would, once again, fall wholly on him. It was a terrifying cycle, one that never seemed to let up and only added more pressure with each passing day. He was a fool for doing this to himself again. He was getting too old for this, and yet he did not currently have a suitable heir to the pack. None of his children were in a position to step up, and he would likely not trust the pack to anyone but Shayde. However, the small red wolf likely could not handle the pack alone, and Vorilye did not want to give up the reins to someone he did not feel that he could not control in one way or another. It was a perpetual dilemma, one that would have to be sorted out, or the pack would fall.
The further east the male wandered, the more his mind was swept away in errant thoughts. He almost missed the fact that he was so close to Amar territory that he could spit on it. Surely no loners would dare to traipse the fine line between two of Anikira's most powerful packs, though Vorilye did not feel as if Descai was truly as powerful as he indicated to others. They needed to get things sorted out, and then they could succeed. Wrestling with the thoughts of his own failure, the alpha not only was not paying attention to scents, but also completely stopped noticing where it was that he walked.
The male thudded against something rather fluffy, and Vorilye felt his feet slipping as he was thrown to the ground from the impact. Surely the alpha had not been expecting to encounter anyone this far east, especially another pack wolf. The male gathered himself quickly, his body growing rigid as his hackles raise and a snarl ripped from his throat. Then, everything changed when he noticed exactly who he had run into.
"Sweetheart," the alpha male breathed, stunned by the fact that his daughter was, once more, before him. The uttered word brought sadness to the male's golden eyes as he realized, once more, that his daughter still had not told him her name. His son never bothered to do so either, and Vorilye never before had felt so inferior to another being. All he ever wanted was to have her approval and love, and that had been torn away from him in one instant of rage. Surely Kallik had explained his fits to the pups, especially because of her exile from Descai. Truthfully, it had been self-inflicted exile. Vorilye had never once told her that she could not remain in the pack, but rather Kallik refused to accept the rank of Omega long enough to prove that she had not been lying. It still angered the alpha to this day, but that was the past. He could not continue to dwell on it or it would destroy him from the inside out.
"My dear, what are you doing here?" he asked softly, unable to find the words he really wanted to speak. He had so much that he needed to tell her, but if she did not want to listen, then they would do little to no good. Vorilye knew that she probably did not mean to encounter him here. If she really wanted to see him, all she would have had to do was howl and he would have run from the other side of the continent to meet her needs. Now, he was at the mercy of the young female before him, and only time would tell if she would be willing to let him make amends.

As easily as her mind had wandered to thoughts of the past, Kyra had fallen into daydreaming about the future. Amar was full of powerful wolves, each of which could easily protect her. Even from her father, should he come barging in. There was even a wolf who had a bear following him around! Kyra hadn’t yet met this wolf, but she’d seen the bear at one point. He had laughed at her puppish growling before sauntering off. She was rather surprised he didn’t just eat her. Kiddo hadn’t even batted an eyelash when she warned him of the bear. That fact alone had her curious about the wolf who traveled with a bear.
Not only that, Kyra was beginning to grow curious about the other members of the pack as well. This was the first time she’d been part of a pack. Well, besides Ryala. But according to the birds, Ryala was no more. They tittered about a pack to the south, but the name was different. Clearly her previous pack had diminished as soon as Aries had vanished. All the more reason for her to have booked it. But she decided that it would be different with Amar. Kiddo seemed the perfect alpha, capable of ruling for a long time. In Kyra’s eyes, he wasn’t planning on going anywhere anytime soon. Kind of like her father, except Kiddo had actually accepted her.
And then her mind was back to her father. Amar and Descai. Neighbors in territory yet so different in just about every other aspect. Both were powerful, but Amar had more of a family feel to it. Descai was terrifying, and despite the fact that she had once considered joining, Kyra felt she was in the better of the two packs. Kiddo hardly cared that she was partially blind. In fact, he almost seemed to push her harder because of the fact. In Descai, Kyra would have likely been coddled. The weakest link, shoved into the dark corner. No. Here in Amar, she was going to grow. She would become a wolf her father would regret tossing aside. She would become more powerful than the black and gold brute. In due time.
All of a sudden, Kyra was knocked off her feet as something slammed into her from behind. The runt sprawled to the ground with a yelp and a grunt, groaning upon impact. Just what in the world was that? Kyra sprang to her feet as her fluffy fur stood up on end, granting her the size she didn’t truly have. A fierce snarl ripped through the air from behind her, but she wasn’t about to let that frighten her. She loosed her own, fierce growl—though it was pathetic in comparison—and whirled around to face her adversary. What she found, however, caused her growl to stop short.
“Dad...”
The word had slipped out of its own accord, far more familiar than she liked to be with him. Even as he uttered his own endearing term—it slipped her mind that he didn’t know her name—Kyra’s eyes remained narrow, and her fur never slicked back down. Perhaps this was some sort of trickery? Maybe it was Tike, attempting to lure her into a sense of false hope or whatever. But Tike’s eyes were green, not gold. And even though he would likely become as large as their father one day, Kyra didn’t think he’d have grown so much so quickly. No. This was definitely her father.
Confusion rose in Kyra’s heart. She was still angry with him. He had run her out after all. But the look in his eyes... Kyra had always been big on eyes, seeing as only one of her own worked, and she knew that it was difficult to hide true feelings in the eyes. Her father looked happy to see her, yet there was a swirl of sadness in his golden orbs. What does he have to be sad about? Oh how she wanted him to be miserable. To feel the pain of rejection as she had. To suffer at her paw. But she couldn’t manipulate him at this point. She was still too young, and hadn’t undergone any of the training she sought in Amar. This whole encounter was premature...
As the runt backed away from her father, hoping to cross into Amar, the brute spoke up. A soft tone that Kyra hadn’t heard any use with her. Most of the time, the tone was panicked or angry. Never soft and caring. It caused Kyra to freeze, eyes locked with her father’s. “It was a mistake,” she snapped, ears flattening to her head. While she felt as if she were intimidating, she actually appeared quite the opposite. Her tail had drooped down upon recognition of the alpha brute. Her entire stance was submissive, her stomach nearly dragging on the ground as she inched away from him. It was quite pathetic, really. “And why are you here?” she shot back, though she already knew the answer. “Here to take me prisoner? To refuse my return to my pack?”

Quite possibly the sweetest word that Vorilye could ever have imagined slipped through his daughter's lips, and all it could do was provoke a quiet whine. He was surprised that she would even refer to him as her father, particularly after their gigantic misunderstanding. How could he have been so crass and hurtful to his only daughter? Vorilye was wounded that he would not tell him her name, and all she could see was that she was turning away from him and shutting him out. The alpha male acted defensively and put up his walls, not allowing even his own daughter inside. This was all his doing, and there was little Vor could do to change the past. However, he wanted to make the future better and brighter. Surely he could managed that, right?
As the alpha male noticed the young Mackenzie Valley female backing away toward the Oriens, he almost cried out in pain. She could not leave him again, he had only just found her! The hurtful cry slipped from the alpha's golden muzzle before he could hold it in any longer. "Please don't go," he almost sobbed, his golden eyes filled with unshed tears as he gazed upon his beautiful daughter. He could see so much of himself in the little one, even with Kallik mixed in as well. He wished more than anything he could have been there to protect and support her when she was younger. Surely it had to be rough living with just her mother and that bitch of an alphess, Akihra.
The harsh words of his daughter cut down to the very heart of the male. Of course she had not intended to see him; she wanted nothing to do with him. Vorilye was not even important enough in her life to know her god damned name! "I just want to know you..." he trailed off. He did not know how to address her. He did not want to seem like even more of a shitty father to her, though he already knew that this was the case. He was trying to be better, but that also meant he needed to right the wrongs of his past. This included making things better for his daughter. All he wanted was a chance to be better for her. He wanted her to know that he was not the monster that her mother likely made him out to be. He did not want to be hated; all he sought was her approval.
As she prattled on about him taking her hostage, the male's eyes grew wide. Not only did she think that he was cruel enough to restrict where she went, but she also had joined a pack. Based on the direction she headed, it was incredibly likely that she was a member of the neighboring pack. Vorilye did not trust the alpha of those lands, and now the situation was even more dire because he had control of his daughter. "Love, I am not here to tell you what to do. You are always welcome in my territory. But I beg of you, do not tell your pack who you are. I do not want you to fall in the middle of territory politics," he pled with his daughter. From what he could tell, the alpha male of Amar would do whatever it took to make his pack greater, and he refused to let his daughter become a bargaining chip for the pack to do what it pleased. She was already in a dangerous situation by joining a neighboring pack. Why could she not have ventured further away? That way, Vorilye's reputation could never have extended to potentially harm her.
"I know I have made mistakes, sweet girl. I am so sorry for what I did," the male finally breathed out his apology in the most tender, sincere voice the alpha had ever uttered. "I jumped to conclusions. I thought you wanted to take Ryke-Tike away from me, live far away from Descai. I could not bear to lose another of my children when I had already thought I lost you. I just wanted to be there for you, and it exploded in my face. I just want to be able to address my sweet girl by name, and know that I am not a complete disappointment as a father to her."

Vorilye || Mackenzie Valley Brute || Eight Years Old
The Mackenize runt could hardly believe the brute before her was the very same brute that had snapped at her back in the woods. At her informal address, he had actually whined, as if he longed for nothing else. Kyra regretted it further, mentally scolding herself for slipping. Yet there was a part of her that kind of like his reaction. Maybe he actually did care for her, even if it was a small amount. But what were the chances of that? Kyra refused to allow herself to feel any sort of hope. She would only wind up crushed when he decided to turn her away again.
As she backed away, she could hardly believe the pained cry that her father let loose. There was little doubt in the runt’s mind that he was desperately trying here. To do what, however, she couldn’t quite place. There was no indication of anger in his eyes. In fact, they were more pleading than anything. The last time she’d seen him, her father’s eyes had been mean and cold. To see the warmth aimed towards her... It caused turmoil in her heart. How was she supposed to respond to that? At the last meeting, she had nuzzled up against him, and while the urge was there now as well, she couldn’t bring herself to get that close to him. Not again. She’d been hurt the last time, to the point where she’d nearly died.
Yet even wanting nothing to do with the brute before her, Kyra couldn’t bring herself to just leave. And then he muttered that he wanted to know her. Before she could even think about it, she asked, “Why?” in a tone that was much harsher than she intended. She flinched at her own tone, glancing up at him apologetically. “What’s the point...” A stabbing pain surged through the runt’s heart. Why couldn’t she just let him know her? Why had it turned out this way?
Before she could begin crying, Kyra returned to her stubborn self, refusing to let the brute any closer than he already was. She should return to Amar. But was her father going to keep her from leaving? Would he force her to join his pack despite having turned her away in the first place? The response she earned, however, was far from what she was expecting. He wasn’t going to keep her from going back to Amar? Though he seemed frantic about it... Why couldn’t she tell Kiddo who she was? “B-But... I shouldn’t lie to them like that...” Kyra felt as though she actually belonged in Amar, even if the wolves were a little different from those she grew up with. Kiddo had yet to baby her as her mother and siblings ever had, to which she was grateful. She didn’t like the idea of lying to someone who put his faith in her...
But if it was a request from her father, she supposed she could do as he asked... For now...
Her father continued on, this time apologizing to the runt. Kyra’s eyes widened at hearing his tender tone. For the past few months, she’d thought of him as nothing more than a heartless monster, incapable of feeling any sort of remorse. Yet here he was, regretting what he had done. It was everything Kyra had wanted to hear, and for a brief moment, she thought she might be dreaming. She shook her head rigorously, as if to shake the dream away. But her father was still before her, looking absolutely devastated. She wasn’t dreaming. Try as she might, Kyra couldn’t control her tear ducts, and the tears just started flowing down her face. She then leapt forward, rushing up to him, and buried her head in his chest.
The distance she had placed between herself and her father disappeared just like that. She no longer cared for what had happened before in the woods. They had both made mistakes, both overreacted. If her father could regret exploding in her face, the least she could do was accept his apology. And apologize herself. “I’m sorry too,” she murmured, nuzzling the dense fur of her father. She inhaled deeply, trying to memorize his scent. Was it too late to have a proper relationship with her father? Kyra had once thought it might be. But if she could just take that first step... She pulled away from his warmth, gazing deep into his eyes. “Kyra. My name is Kyra...”

The reaction from his daughter was nothing like what he had imagined. The little Mackenzie Valley female seemed to accept his apology, which was painfully evident by her sudden lunge and snuggle. Vorilye could only bury his face in his daughter's coat, memorizing her scent and hoping that the moment would never truly end. He had been so wrong to lash out at her, and all it had done was drive a wedge between them. His daughter had already lost her mother, and he did not want her to think that her father did not care for her either. Kallik had been a coward and ended her own life; that much could not be mistaken. But Vorilye wanted to be a father to his daughter, even if she would not remain in Descai with him. She wanted him with her, but Vorilye could not bring himself to ask his daughter to leave her pack and join him here. But he wanted her to meet her siblings, to have the option to return here if she desired.
And then, the sweetest of all words came from the young female. "Kyra," he breathed with reverence, his tongue bathing her face affectionately as he spoke it over and over again. "My Kyra. My beloved daughter, how I have missed you." The laugh that came from the black and golden alpha was one of relief. He had finally found his daughter and made amends. They were going to be okay. Even if she was not going to come live with him in Acerbus and Kamari, she was nearby, and he would be able to protect her. But that brought him back to the initial warning he gave his daughter; tell no one who she truly was.
"Kyra, I don't want you to be put in a bad situation because of who I am. I do not know your alpha. I am not familiar with your pack. I do not know whether he is the type that would try to use something like that against me. Because believe me, when it comes to you, I would cross all the earth and heavens to get you back," he admitted, the desperation in his voice clear. He could not fathom his daughter being in a position that could harm her. All he wanted was to protect her from the world around her, but he knew that she could make her own decisions. She was over a year old, and she had every right to be away from him. Heck, with all the mistakes he had made, Vorilye was surprised she would even accept his apology.
"But Kyra, if you ever come back here, you are welcome. You bear the colors of my coat, and all within Descai know what that means. You have as much right to be here as any of them, regardless to which pack you swear allegiance. But baby girl, one day I want you to come meet your brothers and sisters," he breathed, the prickling of happy tears settling in the corner of his eyes. He wanted her to be one hundred percent certain that she belonged here, even if she did not think she did. He would never turn her away; she was his flesh and blood, and she was his only known surviving daughter other than Zirena. She had been through so much, had so many challenges, and yet here she was, still alive and kicking.
"You have three little brothers... Sypher, Atlas and Zephyros. And your sisters, Zirena, Zofia, and Valeria." It was interesting that he chose to include Atlas in the list of Kyra's "siblings," be he had already made the decision that the pup was to be treated equally, regardless of his crummy parentage. It would be obvious upon sight that Atlas was the odd one out. He bore no resemblance to Vorilye and little to no resemblance to his mother. Somewhere out there was the male that created this little puppy, and one day Vorilye would find him and make him pay for violating a member of his pack. That would be a promise that the alpha male would be happy to fulfill. But for right now, he needed to relish his time with Kyra before she crossed the border once more and was out of his jurisdiction.

Vorilye || Mackenzie Valley Brute || Eight Years Old
The wall that Kyra had been fighting to climb over was finally nothing but rubble at her feet. After losing her siblings and mother, Kyra really couldn’t afford to be on bad terms with her father and brother. She had long since healed some of the wounds between herself and Tike, and the ones between her father and herself were finally closing as well. She was finally on the path to having a normal family. And even though she called another pack her home, Kyra wasn’t sure they would ever truly be her family. Not anymore, at least. She had her father’s forgiveness and love. No other wolf could replace his presence in her heart.
As the larger brute accepted and returned her affection, Kyra could only whimper. Her life had been turned upside down even before she was born. She grew up without a father, became blind, lost her siblings, and then her mother. Most pups her age were beginning to become a proper part of their birth pack. Kyra was part of a completely different pack, and could hardly call herself ‘proper’. She was a mere subordinate, trying her hardest to prove herself to Kiddo. Even if he wasn’t her father, she still wished for the alpha brute’s approval. And now that she mended things with her own father, she no longer needed to use him as a surrogate. She could move forward on her own, and know that everything was as it should be.
Hearing her father utter her name with such affection caused Kyra’s heart to swell. She never thought that her name could ever bring such joy to another. “I’ve been awful to you, Dad,” she murmured, nuzzling into his warmth yet again. “To you and Tike...” The moment would have been even more perfect if her brother magically appeared to join in the family love. That could have spoiled it as well, however, and the mere thought of Tike hugging her made her giggle. No. He would sooner watch on awkwardly, waiting his turn to speak. This moment was a father-daughter moment. Nothing could ever spoil it.
Except for her father’s sudden panic. He pressed the issue of her status, not wanting her to tell anyone about who she really was. It was just something she didn’t understand. “Kiddo isn’t like that,” she said, her voice strong. She didn’t know much about pack politics, but if he had accepted a half-blind puppy who had looked as awful as she had at the time, there was no chance of him being like that. He just...couldn’t. “I don’t think he would do something like that.” The more she said it, the more she believed it. That would be the case with her father too, right? When the larger brute admitted to doing whatever it took to bring her back to his side, Kyra felt a warmth spread through her heart. She was needed. By her father. Her tail began wagging furiously behind her, giving away how truly happy that statement made her feel.
That happiness surged further as her father told her she was welcome in his lands. The runt could hardly believe it. She belonged to another pack, yet she had a home here in Kamari and Acerbus. With her home pack. It almost made her want to leave and return to her father’s side as he wanted. But she had chosen Amar when she was at a low point in her life. She couldn’t just abandon the pack now that she was riding the high again. Her conviction faltered, however, when her father mentioned siblings. “Brothers and sisters? What do you mean?” Last she had known, Tike was her only sibling. Had it all been an awful dream? No, that wasn’t possible. The terror she had felt that day had been real. Far too real to be a mere dream.
Kyra was a big sister... The thought alone was baffling, as she wasn’t a very large wolf to begin with. But she actually had siblings again. And she was the older. It was hard for her to wrap her head around, but there was no doubt that her father was speaking the truth. He listed off their names, three brothers and three sisters. With her tail wagging furiously behind her, Kyra let out a yip of happiness. She wanted to meet them right now! But... She kept the thought to herself. Spring had only just begun, so it was safe to say her siblings were still very young. She remembered how protective Mother had been over her own litter. She didn’t want to intrude on whomever her father had taken as his mate. “I want to meet them as soon as I can, Dad.” Calling him ‘Dad’ felt a little strange to the runt, but in a good way. “You’ll let me know when they’re big enough, right?” She knew that if her father were to call for her, she would come running, no matter the cost. He was her father, her flesh and blood. Even with all the pain she went through to get to where she was now, family would always mean much more to her than anything else.
