The morning air was chill and the wind was silent. The scent of a light frost tickled the hunky canine's nostrils. His thick, black pelt blocked the cold from penetrating to the skin. In fact, he felt quite warm. The sun rays sparkled off the horizon, singing of a new dawn upon the Earth. They sent a tingling emotion off in Akachi's chest, filling him with excitement. The scent of pack wolves lingered on every rock, every plant. He had stalked the borders of this pack for some weeks, waiting for the appropriate moment to show himself. The loner wanted so badly to be accepted, he had gone over the situation in his mind thousands of times. He would not act foolish. He would not fall over himself. He would bestow himself as an intelligent, awesome, muscular male. A fine addition to accept into the pack.
Akachi shook himself, standing up straight as he gazed off the ridge down onto the forest. The male tapped his front paws against the ground in anticipation, a bit too embarrassed to let the howl loose from his throat. Surely he wouldn't be found unless he made himself known. But, there was something itching at the back of his mind. Of all the pack's scents he had smelt, Akachi had not found one to be that of a male. The loner sat back on his haunches, settling his doubts. The less males there were, the better, he decided. His final good bye with his brother had been a relief, he didn't feel in the least inclined to visit the other male. Although he loved Savio dearly, he got on Akachi's nerves to no end. The bigger brother taunted him often when they were young and as they grew older together, he began to care less and less of Akachi. Savio came to the point of if he had caught a small meal in a hungry point of time, he would fight Akachi for it to the point of near death. And it was always the little brother who would be the loser of such scraps.
The black male blinked rust orange eyes, focusing on the long stretch of ridge before him. He had to at least give this pack a try. If they were hostile, Akachi could hold his own enough to make a close escape. He knew the paths in the area well and had thought of such situations, preparing by drilling the routes into his brain. Akachi raised his head to the bright morning sky, giving a short howl to the long white clouds. He looked back down toward the treeline, awaiting a response.
